Al Davis Birthday Haiku

Like wine, older yet
finer; critics be damned, he
still takes what he wants.

Raider Take wishes a very happy birthday to Hall of Famer and pioneering freethinker Al Davis, the "only person to have served pro football in such varied capacities as a player personnel assistant, an assistant coach, a head coach, a general manager, a league commissioner and the principal owner and chief executive officer of an NFL team." Mr. Davis has also blazed executive trails in both race and gender in pro football. Raider Take loves Al Davis!

Raider Take today also celebrates the independence of this great nation. Thanks to all of the brave souls in our military who are on the front lines, here and abroad, defending our freedoms.

Addendum 7/6: Check out Stick'Em's The Raider Way and Calico Jack's Silver & Black Forever for more celebratory words on Mr. Davis.

May God continue bless and protect our troops so that WE can continue to enjoy our freedom here in America that we take for granted.

But may he also forgive the liberals and democrats who are causing DISUNITY in this country and making our soldiers out to be criminals and us laughing stocks among the terrorists!

Happy Birthday America!

At the risk of turning this into a political flame war, I second what Scorpio says...including the birthday wish.

I appreciate the sentiments!

However, while I would never presume to control or censor any comments here at Raider Take, I personally choose to avoid political commentary in this space, because my goal is to foster unity in the Raider Nation, regardless of creed or affiliation.

I think it's safe to say that we all respect our military and love our country, and that despite any differences that we might have, we are all united in our enthusiasm for THE OAKLAND RAIDERS!!!

yes, and with that, we just can't wait until the '06 season is upon us. when is camp opening? end of july?

a lot of people are underestimating our D but these same people will be amazed at how fast our defense is gonna be. i just hope these coaches instill into these players the fundamentals like tackling that have been missing for a long time. attitude is another.

a change in attitude first is already a major turn-around on our way back to respectability.

i for one am for throwing walter in there RIGHT NOW. why wait? aaron brooks? this guy is a temp anyway. not to sound negative but we're not going to the playoffs this year (well, hopefully we'll be at least 8-8 anyway). he might as well get that valuable PT right now than later. with an improved o-line he'll only benefit. with THIS year's experience going into next year, we'll be that much more ready to win. if we wait to play him next year, we start over yet again. the raiders had him rated as the #1 QB in the draft last year so bring it on baby. let see what he's got! hopefully he can stay away from that injury bug.

Happy birthday, Mr. Davis.

Regarding our defense being underestimated, I'm sure most of you have seen ESPN's "Ultimate Depth Chart" where they have kindly ranked the Raider's rush and pass defense last amongst all 32 teams. I guess we shouldn't have expected anything less from Mark Schlereth. Luckily for us rankings only matter if you're trying to get into a BCS bowl game (ask CAL two years ago).

Although total passing yardage allowed (or avg yards allowed per game) can be misleading due to game situations (i.e., usually you'll get run on more when you are playing from behind later in the game), I believe the Raiders finished #18 last year in total passing yards allowed / avg game. That would be ahead of Miami, Philly, Cincy, and New England just to name a few.

Yes, we MUST improve on creating turnovers. But, when you are middle of the pack in terms of total passing yards allowed, feature the league's leading sacker, drafted without question the top DB in the draft, and will possibly have addition by subtraction with Charles Daryl Strawberry I Could Have Been Great But My Health And Desire For the Game Stayed At Michigan Woodson...I'm not sure how that equation get's you ranked worst in the league against the pass by the "experts".

Personally, I'm all over this underdog vibe we have going into this year. Scheme, speed, and hitting....that's what I want to see from Section 137 for 8 games this year. The rest will take care of itself, including playoffs.

living his own dream
as long as i've been alive
to me he's an idol

my own haiku about Al. i may have taken liberties with "idol". one sylable or two? idle i would think would be two but idol? i dunno. if it is two, drop "he's" and add a comma there. lol.
