2007 Oakland Raiders Manifesto

I recently hiked deep into the desert with nothing but a twelve pack of Old Milwaukee, a ream of recycled paper and a manual typewriter. The result is my 2007 Oakland Raiders Manifesto, which I now humbly present to you.

Please be patient, this is going to be long and, at times, incoherent, as is the nature of a manifesto.

Anyhow, after finishing my beer near dawn amid the Mojave wilderness, I lit the cardboard box on fire and melted the aluminum cans, pouring the liquid metal into the hollow carcass of a cactus, so that I might create a totem to my work and existence, much like the great Ozymandias. On my long walk back to civilization, I defended myself against scorpions and reptilian predators, as well as my own personal demons. There was a moment when I thought I wouldn’t make it, as the fiery desert sun was broiling me into a state of extreme dehydration. It was then that I beheld the most glorious sight—an oasis of running water and fresh fruits hanging low to the ground from the long branches of tropical flora. I stumbled forward. I partook in the running water and fresh fruits. I was rejuvenated and reborn, and I then found my way home.

It was only later that I realized my experience was a supernatural metaphor for the 2007 Oakland Raiders. The aluminum cactus was, in fact, the Lombardi trophies of seasons past. The scorpions and reptilian predators were the Raider Haters, sneaky and persistent in their attacks. My own personal demons were Art Shell and Tom Walsh, darker sides of my soul that should have remained suppressed. And the oasis was the upcoming 2007 season, a refuge of refreshing new hope.

And I, friends, was Al Davis. At least until I sobered up...

Anyhow, I’m sure you get my drift. This year is going to be different. Take it from me, the guy who assured you 12 months ago that Art Shell would return the team to glory.

Sure, I was wrong last year. I thought that Art Shell, and even Tom Walsh, deserved a fair shake. I don’t ever turn on anyone on my team before the season has started. Everyone on my team deserves the benefit of the doubt. It’s just like family.

But if you look back at my takes last season, as well as my follow-up comments, I got fed up pretty quickly with the coaching staff, even as several readers tried to convince me that the coaching wasn’t apocalyptic, and that the players were just as bad and equally at fault. The players may have been bad, but they weren’t nearly as bad as the coaches.

Just three games into last season, here’s what I said after Walsh & Company started milking the clock while down double digits late in the game: "Let’s return to the reality at hand, and this incomprehensible bit of business about still learning how to get to the line in time, and the related concept of coaching. There’s been a lot of discussion about our playcalling and our execution, and where one begins and the other ends. But something that has been overlooked in this discussion is this concept of coaching. Not coaching in the playcalling sense of the word, but in the teaching sense of the word. You can say all you want about professionals being expected to execute like professionals. But at the end of the day, the players are students and the coaches are teachers. Otherwise, why have unit and position coaches in the first place?”

It was all downhill from there. And we know how it ended…

In my postseason thesis published last January, which was entitled “Pride: The Autopsy of A Lost Season,” I made the following observation: “We hired an insider who hadn’t prowled a sideline in six years, and who hadn’t been a head coach since 1994. We hired an offensive coordinator who had been away from the NFL for more than a decade, and who had been away from the game of football for seven years. We hired a pair of offensive line coaches who, despite once being great players, had marginal coaching experience. We hired a quarterbacks coach with no NFL experience, and very little experience as a quarterbacks coach at any level.

Meanwhile, we made no significant personnel moves on offense. Please don’t say that this was a rebuilding year. Around whom did we allegedly rebuild on offense? Aaron Brooks? Who else? Silence.

Our offensive unit didn’t field itself. Our executives—Al Davis, Mike Lombardi and Art Shell—fielded it. Our executives passed on potential franchise quarterbacks such as Matt Leinart and Jay Cutler in the draft. Our executives passed on a running back like Maurice Jones-Drew in the second round, and did not shore up the running back position via free agency or trading (despite LaMont Jordan’s shortcomings and Justin Fargas’s proneness to injury). Our executives built a receiving corps around two players, Randy Moss and Jerry Porter, with serious character flaws. Our executives put our tight ends position in the hands of two major underachievers. Our executives did not aggressively pursue a free agent lineman such as Larry Allen. They simply signed Aaron Brooks and drafted Paul McQuistan in the third round and Kevin Boothe in the sixth round, and left it at that. Thus, we now find ourselves with huge question marks at quarterback, running back, wide receiver, tight end and offensive line—a totality of uncertainty that is simply stunning.”

The uncertainty was, indeed, stunning—and yet just seven months later, it has been largely erased. From top to bottom, forward and backward, our offensive coaching staff has been upgraded. We drafted our presumed franchise quarterback. We drafted a promising running back and picked up another solid runner via free agency. We ran Courtney Anderson out of town and replaced him with a young stud at tight end. We picked up Jeremy Newberry and others to shore up our line with some veteran savvy. We signed a fullback (what a concept—a fullback!) in Justin Griffith. We removed the cancer known as Randy Moss and applied some apparently successful chemotherapy to Jerry Porter.

In other words, every single point I made in January has been addressed. Why shouldn’t I expect significant improvement?

Yet just yesterday on ESPN Radio, I heard Sean Salisbury declare, “I don’t think the Raiders have improved at all” on offense. Let’s see: Better head coach, better offensive coordinator and better line coach. More talent at quarterback, running back, tight end and even offensive line (receiver position might be a wash with Moss's departure and the additions of Taylor and Williams).

Yet ESPN’s Sean Salisbury says nothing’s changed. Willful ignorance is a special talent of the Raider Haters.

Yet other haters are suddenly hedging their bets. In its 2007 NFL Guide, Athlon Sports states: “There isn’t any reason to think the Raiders can’t win as many as seven or eight games with a few lucky bounces.”

ESPN’s John Clayton (who really isn’t an avowed Hater, he’s a bit too mature for that), recently wrote (thanks for the link, Freaking Pope): "First-year coach Lane Kiffin brings a new vigor to Raider practices. Assistants run up and down the field to encourage or teach young players. Offensive line drills have more intensity as coaches try to bring out more aggressiveness in the blocking schemes. Still, the treat of camp is the strong arm of JaMarcus Russell. Watching him throw is a thrill in itself."

Meanwhile, the Kansas City Chiefs’ team web site recently ran an article (thanks to Colin for the link) that began: “It’s time for the AFC West to start worrying about the Oakland Raiders again.”

Heck, even our friend at Sports Illustrated, who likes to send early valentines to Daniel Snyder every July with his annual NFL owners rankings, upgraded Al Davis five slots this year—after a 2-14 season! Imagine that, Al Davis’s stock rises after the worst season in his tenure with the team. That's a textbook example of a Hater hedging his bets. He knows something's up in Oakland.

Speaking of betting, when Mr. Davis was recently asked about the possibility of gambling at the officiating levels of the NFL (per the NBA’s recent troubles), he said he wasn’t worried about gambling, he was worried about bias. So much for his alleged senility. His answer was not only quick, it was on the mark.

ESPN radio host Colin Cowherd, a Raider Hater but no dummy, highlighted Mr. Davis’s comments in his August 2 show, affirming that officiating bias is, indeed, a very real phenomenon and a legitimate cause for concern in professional sports. In 2005, the zebras screwed us not once against the Chiefs, but twice, affecting the outcome of both games against our AFC West rivals. The latter instance was so infuriating that a Raiders executive confronted the officials after the game and had to be restrained. Last year, against the Browns, Seahawks and Chargers, we saw similarly dubious calls.

Here’s what Mr. Davis said: “I don't worry about gambling, I worry about bias. I worry about bias. Because if you remember, Sports Illustared ran an article about officiating in the NFL. And one of the officials said, 'The only thing we're warned in our meeting, be on the lookout when you go to Oakland. Watch out when you go to Oakland."

Mr. Davis could have also easily cited the fact that, just weeks ago, the NFL’s head of officiating took a cheap shot at the Raiders while suggesting that a blown call is more excusable if the wronged team made its own mistakes earlier in the game.

I recall Art Shell standing mute and slack jawed after that ripoff call in San Diego last November. While always trying to look poised, Art Shell seemed unable to demonstrate his pride. The officials walked all over him and us. I want, and expect, Lane Kiffin to go Earl Weaver and Lou Piniella on any zebra that dares thieve another game from the Oakland Raiders. Enough is enough.

On a similar track, do you think that our staff will be so befuddled that they will be unable (not unwilling, unable) to challenge an obviously horrible game-changing call? Do you think that Greg Knapp will go pass happy behind a broken offensive line amid a rainstorm? Do you think our team will be literally unable to run a no-huddle offense?

I don’t. What we saw last year was incompetence of biblical proportions. Thankfully, it’s the kind of thing you’ll only see once in a lifetime, because so many things have to be simultaneously wrong for it to happen at all.

Oh, I still have my concerns. Can Jerry Porter’s legs finally outrun his mouth? We’re still overly reliant on LaMont Jordan, at least until Dominic Rhodes returns from his self-inflicted boneheaded banishment (yes, I’ve heard of Adimchinobe Echemandu, but I’m not ready to anoint him the next Bo Jackson until he plays in a game or two). The offensive line…well, that subject scares me like West Nile virus and Paris Hilton with a dictionary.

Speaking of scary, how about this nugget from Saturday’s practice: “Andrew Walter’s most memorable play came when he dropped a snap from center Jeremy Newberry, looked at it for a moment, then kicked the ball before it was recovered by defensive lineman Kevin Huntley.”

I’ve come to the conclusion that Andrew Walter just might not be very alert, in the football sense of the word. I sure hope that Daunte Culpepper’s knee is fully healed. I was more comfortable with McCown as our starter before Russell’s holdout, figuring that Russell might be ready by midseason if McCown melted down. But with Culpepper here, I’m going to hitch my wagon to his train and pray that he returns to his once-remarkable form, or at least a good shadow of it, because Russell’s readiness is retreating by the day.

You know who’s also holding out in addition to Jamarcus Russell? Brady Quinn. You know, the kid with his head on his shoulders, or so we were told. Matt Leinart held out for a few weeks last year. Not to say that I’m not concerned about Russell, but it’s too early to panic. I don’t like it, but I do like that we signed Culpepper as a hedge.

There’s a reason I’m not talking much about the defense here. I just don’t have much to say about our defense. They were very good verging on great last year, and if they can stuff the run with some regularity, they will be great. I don’t want to talk about it, though. I’m afraid I’ll jinx things. Just let Caveman Ryan & Company do their thing.

By the way, I’m glad that Al Davis didn’t hand over the head coaching keys to Rob Ryan. Some said he “deserved” the job. Not the best premise for hiring a coach. And why would we hire a defensive guru to help fix one of the worst offenses in NFL history while creating a vacancy at the defensive coordinator’s position, when defense was the only thing going right for the team?

No, I like the Caveman in his cave, making fire and beating things with bones. His time might come, but Kiffin’s time is now. Al Davis has a demonstrated nose for young up-and-coming coaches. Madden and Gruden are obvious examples, but people forget that Mike Shanahan was also young and unproven, too, when Al Davis gave him the reins. It didn’t work out for the Raiders, but, as much as I hate to say it, Shanahan has proved to be a successful NFL coach.

I have no reason to expect that Kiffin will be any different.

Just recently, a writer for the San Francisco Chronicle made a slanderous allegation that Kiffin is going to cut older players because…they are older. Kiffin supposedly feels threatened by older players because of his own tender age. The same Kiffin who hired a staff of older proven coaches, such as Greg Knapp and Tom Cable. But that Adam Treu, he really had Kiffin’s knees knocking? Don’t believe it. Kiffin and his staff are a major upgrade over last year’s Cirque du Soleil troupe, and I accordingly expect to see significant improvement.

You might recall that before our late November game last year in San Diego (the one with the infamous “illegal forward pass” call), Raider Take’s favorite columnist wrote the following: “The game will be decisively lost. You Raider fans will endure all of it because you still believe your heart rather than your own lying eyes, and good on you and your blind, delusional faith. It's good to believe in something, even if it's just a sham.”

Our columnist pulled a hate muscle that day, and I think he’s still limping. Anyhow, the game wasn’t decisively lost. It was our third straight game against AFC West rivals, and we lost all three—but only by a grand total of 15 points. Don’t tell me that the Broncos, Chiefs or Chargers were taking it easy on us. If we could play those teams tough last year, we can sure play them tough this year.

I was attending a free concert at the local town park the other night, wearing my Raiders hat, and the singer mentioned that one of his bandmates was a great guy—except that he was a Raiders fan. The singer then told a joke: How does a Raiders fan teach his kid to count? Start with zero, then go 0 and 1, 0 and 2, 0 and 3, etc.

I have to admit, it was kind of funny. After last year, I’ve come to accept, and even embrace, such banter. It means that I’ll get to serve a big slice of crow someday, and probably sooner than they think.

Friends, we are coming out of the desert. As Raiders fans, we have deep reserves of passion, loyalty, faith, tenacity and fanaticism. Having drawn on these reserves, we remain resolved. The oasis lies ahead. Behold the new season.

you know it's going to be a good year when one of your rivals writes about your team, and doesn't say anything negative.
great take rt.

Exellent RT! The prospect of having a cognizant force on the sideline to calls plays, make real-time game decisions, half-time adjustments, and even throw an occasional well-timed red flag gives me goose bumps.... I’m not sure what I’ll do if I actually see that happen.

You have to admit that when people are complaining that the coaches aren't working on a 2 minute drill, or that clock management, when trailing in the score, demands that you HURRY UP, it's so incomprehensable that you have to convince yourself that those things are being worked on, just not performed on game day.

Throughout the rest of my life I will always wonder what the hell Art Shell was thinking. But, all in all, he was only two to three games a year worse than Norv. And now Norv is in SD. Sweet.

Old Wilwaukee is what I call the Breakfast of Champions when tailgating in Oakland!

I hear you, BlandaRocked. We lost those three straight AFC West games by a grand total of 15 points, and some other close ones as well. The difference between Shell's 2-14 and Norv's 4-12 is pretty slim. If our offense had been just a hair better than biblically incompetent, we would have won four or five games.

I expect the Chiefs and Chargers to take a step backward this year. The Broncos might be a different story.

Nice article, RT.
Everything is indeed looking up for us, with only one dark cloud: the whole Russell ordeal. It's like a turd in the keg at a great party. The last and most important piece missing in our quest to re-establish dominance is a franchise QB. Russell may or may not prove to be a franchise QB, but we selected him as the 1st pick in the draft. I'm starting to lean toward the problem being Al. Al's like me, when I need costly maintenance to the house, like painting or the deck fixed, I sit on the problem far too long, too reluctant to fork over the cash for something I really have no choice but to do. Al, just enjoy your new weapon. Spend the money and get the kid in there. It's either that or save money and do it on the cheap with two 2nd stringers and veteran on his last leg.

– No way does a skilled negotiator allow the "option bonus" issue to be the lone reason Russell is not in camp. There are ways to write behavioral clauses into contracts which would enable to the club to recover money if Russell wasn't quite the character study they built him up to be.

Whenever a player or an owner says it's not about money, rest assured it's about money.

jerry mac has a very good point here. r8rNate - it could go both ways but i'm leaning with you on this one. yeah, yeah i know. you al davis guys wanna rip me a new one (or a bigger one in my case) for blaming him BUT if this kid is such a high character, religious guy, there's no need to worry about him holding out or getting in trouble in the future right? so al, just sign him dammit! OR if you can't pay him, trade his rights. we could address other needs and be right back in this thing in no time.

whoever said it was right. we ARE better off at QB than a year ago. of course, relying on culpepper is a HUGE gamble but at least we are better off now even without russell.

That's how I feel too Scorpio.
And one other thing I wanted to say about RT's post: does anyone really listen to Sean Salisbury anyway? He sees no changes in Oakland? Salisbury, c'mon... everyone on this blog is writing football opinions while holding down other jobs... Salisbury, following NFL teams IS YOUR FULL TIME JOB.. at least do a little homework before you comment about a team. It's obvious he hasn't done any research on us at all.

bama, we have to realize that these guy's (meaning the media) job is to stir up controversy and create listenership (ie: knbr), readership (local, national papers), and viewership (tv). if they didn't say stupid stuff like that to rile us up, they wouldn't be doing their jobs, therefore no-one'll listen/watch/read 'em.

salsbury's opinion to me, he being a career NFL 2nd stringer is also 2nd string as well.

re: russell, i have a feeling this s going to be a very long uphill battle to sign this guy. jerry mac said it re: behavioral clauses in a contract, but i hope they also include performance and weight clauses as well.

An interesting article on the politics of the HOF:

http://www.realfootball365.com/nfl/articles/2007/08/raiders-stabler-hofsnub080607.html

According to that article in my last post the Raiders' negotiator has never negotiated a contract for a first round pick until this year. I wonder how much that is affecting the stalled negotiations.

Great Post RT!

There's nothing like the smell of a new season. I too, am approaching this season with all the temerity that only a Raider fan can manage. I predict between 6-8 wins this year, as well as about 4-6 close losses.

No reason to panic on J-Rus yet. The signing of Daunte bought us the entire season, or at least the first 12 games.

Scopio, Bama7: According to a post at profootballtalk.com, you're both wrong. The Raiders have offered close to 31 million in guaranteed money. Russell's agents are holding out to break the bank, and at the same time, relieve Russell of any accountability.

Davis should never give in. It's getting to the point where, if Russell wants to play, he needs to fire his agents who represent two of the four remaining NFL unsigned picks.

I think the deal is that after this year, changes are expected to be made in rules pertaining rookie contracts. Russell's agents want to go down as negotiating the biggest rookie, NFL contract ever at Al Davis', the Raider Nation's, and Jamarcus Russell's expense.

I read the take last night but I didn't have the energy to write a comment that could touch on all the different points I found interesting. I still don't today.
I'll just say that the reasons you cited for being optimistic are pretty much exactly the same as mine.
And, I never felt god about Shell and Walsh. The difference this year is plain old cohesiveness.

Here's excerpts from the article: http://www.profootballtalk.com/rumormill.htm

”A league source tells us that the Oakland Raiders have offered quarterback JaMarcus Russell..... a six-year contract containing more than $30 million in guaranteed money. The actual number could be closer to $31 million than it is to $30 million.”

“We're also told that the Russell camp presently is looking for guaranteed money in the neighborhood of $35 million (with demands for option bonus monies).”

“But now that the Raiders have moved up, Russell's folks are holding firm.”

Come on! How much is enough! If this is true, the Raiders offer is more than fair, and more than anyone believed it might be. It’s not Al Davis holding this up. It’s Russell’s camp, particularly his bogus agents who feel they have to show the world who they are and gain a name for themselves. It’s time for Russell to put his agents straight and make sure this gets done.

Mr. Russell ....the model of "CHARACTER"
If any of you think Russell isn't a part of the negotiating team or ultimately having the last word you're in serious denial. Character my ass. It should be plain as the noses on your faces that he won't accept anything but guaranteed money (including Behavior, weight, performance, injuries and hold outs) because he's a money hungry prima donna. He's just waiting for an once of success in the NFL so he can hold out for even more, regardless of the contract he signs. He would hold the Raiders and their fans hostage for mere money. 30 Million ain't enough?
The hopes and aspirations of the Raiders and their fans were sky high when he was drafted. You guys were in heaven. How many idiots already bought jersey's? All of that it appears is of little consequence to Mr. Humble, model of character in comparison to his big money score. Let him sit out all season the Raiders and the Raider Nation don't need him. I didn't want him any way (everyone knows that) but his "Greed" has gone too far. Hell Romanowski looks like he will have been easier to accept as a Raider.
I hope Al Davis makes an example of him for a serious rule change regarding the structuring of Rookie contracts (especially underclassmen).

I tell you what, Commissioner Goodell and NFLPA President Gene Upshaw need to have a sit down and get thid rookie contract issue under control. I get the sinking feeling that if we pay $35 million this year, before the decade is out some rookie is going to want $50 million guaranteed. You'd think the veterans would be ticked about rookies who have yet to do a thing in the league are getting the big money. There's a good article on the money the rookies are getting at NFL.com:

4:20 PM
Blogger RaiderRealist said...

Not necessarily. Teams don't like to throw big money at guys with a lot of mileage on them because they are worried about injuries. They'll go get a guy in the draft, only now those guys are getting huge contracts.

The Chiefs pulled that trick back when Priest Holmes threatened to hold out for a bigger contract and drafted Larry Johnson as an insurance policy. They still paid Holmes, but it paid off in 2005 when Holmes got hurt. Now Johnson wants the big money, and the Chiefs don't want to pay him.

It's good to know what we offered (if it's true). That's all I wanted was the truth out there so the court of public opinion can weigh in against whomever is being the ass in this holdout.
I'm A russell fan, but if the 35 mil thing is true then I say DO NOT do it. Let someone else sign him next year if that's true.
One thing's for sure... he won't get 35 mil this time next year from another team.
Note that Kiffen stated that Kiffen had his way he'd be here. Hopefully Jruss will give in to a fair offer.

Blogger BlandaRocked said...

Having knowledge of such things, Russell is only in charge to the extent he has the hiring/firing power over his agents.

Part of the reason for having an agent is committing to take their advice and to stay out of their way. It's the same thing with having a lawyer. The deal is, you let us negotiate, or negotiate yourself. Until Russell fires his agents, they are going to do what they are going to do.

My hope, at this point, is that if nothing moves by the end of the week, Russell will fire their asses.

I agree, Blanda.
On another topic, having watched Brodie Croyle here in bama for many years I have to say I feel good about our chances against the Chiefs (if he's the starter). Croyle had almost no mobility and was about as fragile as they come. If the Chiefs don't have LJ, Shields or Roaf... we should be able to get that elusive AFC west victory this year. No excuses for not beating the dog sh&^ out of those guys in Oaksland. No excuses.

Russell is the boss ...he is ultimately responsible for their actions in representing him. Russell doesn't get a pass if the agents he hired are greedy snakes.
I suppose we're now expected to believe Russell is innocent and naive in choosing the people who will make him ( and his family and friends) finacially secure for the rest of their lives.

Question...who is the other 1st rounder who is represented by these jurks....is it Quinn.....#22 in the ist round who wants 1st pick money....

MrDavis needs to find a way to take these bastards down....offer "JRus" the roof if he fires his agents and comes in with someone else....We don't want him to sit out the entire year and go back into the draft....we will loose everything....there will be no compensation for the loss of the #1 pick....the NFL will just take a "CRAP" on us....as usual...

So now we have great antisapation about the things to come and yet deep sadness over the potential loss of the #1 opertunity....and we would alway question it..."Should we have taken Calvin"....

From SixPtStar:

Heartland: you got me. I already bought my JRuss Jersey. But let's not lynch the guy just yet. His hold out is still not as long as Leinart's and Leinart was still able to get the start by the end of the season. You are right on another point also. JRuss is ultimately responsible for the actions of his employees, that being his agents.

And I'd rather by haggling with the 1st pick than the 22nd pick. Quinn wants more $ than his draft spot dictates.

Scorpio, do you really think thing would have been much different with Johnson. He just ended his hold out, and there's no way 1 ride reciever has as much impact as a QB. Maybe we would have paid a little less, but we would still have $30 million tied up in 1 WR.

RT, great take. Can't wait till the season starts!

the same article suggests that league rules require Russell to not sign with another agent for five days after firing his current agent; thus, delay his signing yet another week.

How much money is enough for a 21-year-old kid? Can't he see that he is alienating the fans (even his supporters)? Look what happened to A-Rod in NY. Expectations run very high when you get paid that kind of money. Russell should have just taken the insane money that was expected of his #1 pick status and not looked for more. Now, he is potentially the new A-Rod of pro sports. The difference is A-Rod is a proven commodity and Russell is completely unproven (even in the college ranks).

Put another way, it’s akin to the scene in “My Cousin Vinny” when Fred Gwyn (as judge) suggests that Vinny wants to skip the arraignment and go right to trial; skip the trail and go right to acquittal. Russell wants to skip college and go right to the draft; skip the draft and go right to pro-bowler status.

Russell needs to reflect on his humble upbringing. Does his mom (grandmother) know what’s going on?

Russell Vs. Johnson

there's no way 1 wide receiver has as much impact as a QB.

We'll see who puts more points up on the board in the next 2 seasons.

I ain't claiming 20/20 hindsight but Culpepper would have a better model Moss to throw to this year in Johnson.

We're starting to get Raider fans in other forums turning on Russell, calling him a primadona & stuff. Seems to be mostly Walter fans who are pissed that he's on the fence. This thing could get ugly once the media really turns the corner in putting a negative spin on this whole contract thing. I'm not one to rush this deal because I know we have other QB's who were going to start the season anyway. But from a PR standpoint I think it's vital to get this thing done with at least a week or so of time left before the season starts. Normally it wouldn't be as big a deal, but since we're the Raiders, well, you know...

Heartland, you don't have a clue. Always nice to hear ignorance weigh in, but ignorance is what it is.

The way these things work is that even the specific agent who represents Russell doesn't have the power, because he must have the deal ratified by the managing partners of the agency. Contract negotiations are not a one contract one man deal. It is done by a committee on both sides. Russell himself probably won't even know all of the fine print once he signs it.

Also, I don't think the 5 day rule will apply to Russel because Bratton works for the agency which represents Russell. Bratton might leave, take JRuss with him, and join Eddie DeBartolo's agency.

Now many of you will think that means that since Eddie owned the 49ers, he must hate Davis. And you'd be wrong. Davis and DeBartolo's father have been friends for generations, and one would assume that Davis knows the whole family. DeBartolo and Davis never had a problem with each other, the war between the Raiders and the 49ers was between Davis and Carmen Policy.

What I think all of this might mean is that Bratton has been attempting to find common ground with Davis, but the agency won't ratify the deal unless it meets with their demands.

On the down side, it could also mean that the agency has been trying to get Bratton to negotiate in another way, toward different goals, and Bratton wants to leave to eliminate the pressure. If that's the case, then, and only then, Heartland has a point. But his Shield Hat covers it up.

guys, i can honestly say that i REALLY hope i am wrong about russell. it's just too early to tell. but i do hope he puts out. nothing less than payton manning type career will be acceptable for his draft position and proposed salary. Well, Quinn just signed. There was word yesterday (even though media types were saying that Quinn was not problem, not his agent) that Quinn would fire Condon. Today he signs.

So there are three remaining holdouts in the NFL. The agency of Lock, Metz & Malinovic, which never had a holdout now has two thirds of the remaining unsigned rookies.

Apparently it was Quinn who stepped in and said, "get the deal done." I'm hoping for the same from JRuss.

Let there be no mistake. Because of all the rumblings that rookie signings are going to change by rule in the near future, agents are holding out for all that they can get because the goose will stop laying golden eggs soon. The NFL needs to step in before agents start pricing fans out of the NFL market.

SI already has warren sapp cut:

With Anthony McFarland out, the Colts will move forward with Raheem Brock at one starting defensive tackle spot, and . . . well, someone else at the other. Coach Tony Dungy insisted "we won't leave any stone unturned" in monitoring the NFL's waiver wire and available free agents. Two names that likely will surface are Oakland's Warren Sapp and former Chicago Bears standout Tank Johnson.

i don't see this happening.....

But I guess Nancy Gay knows best. It's the age thing, and Kiffin might feel like a child with Sapp on his team.

This guy writes an interesting article.

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/10284433

One major problem in his reasoning. Bo Jackson was only drafted in the late second round by the Raiders because he insisted on playing baseball, making him only available half the season. Davis was the only one who bit on the accomidation. Also, the only reason Tampa failed to sign him was that they didn't want him to play baseball either.

12:48 PM

The bad thing about the new agent is that Russell is forced to wait 5 days to sign another. Whatever the point of this is, it better be worth it. He should've picked the right agent in the first place with the same goals as he, and preferably having a good relationship with Al.

I'm going to quote the Kirwan story that Anonymous cited. All the local media who have claimed that the Raiders have bungled the whole thing should be required to read this:

"As for Russell, it sounds like a more complicated story. Rumors have it that this unproven raw athlete thinks the $23 million Joe Thomas (third pick overall) received and the $27 million Calvin Johnson (second overall selection) received doesn't relate to him. Somehow this kid woke up one day and believed he was worth closer to $40 million in guaranteed money.

Trust me, there's no way he's worth it or is ever going to get it from the Raiders. I'm visiting with teams across the league right now and the most consistent information I get from GMs is that the Raiders are willing to guarantee him $31 million of a $66 million, six-year deal. Personally, I still believe that's too much money for a guy who will not be ready to win games until 2008, but that's a story for a different time.

Then I heard as usual in these stubborn negotiations that the player might be considering a new agent. That would be a mistake because the present agent is already entitled to his commission based on the largest package he has negotiated so far. The Raiders have probably reached the ceiling and a new agent is not going to generate another dime."

1:07 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Pat Kirwan also wrote that for every week J-Russ doesn't sign, the Raiders are taking $1 million off his "guaranteed" money as well. I don't hold a lot of credit to the media, especially Kirwan. He's the equivalent to Sean Salisbury of ESPN, and Peter Gammons.
The real story is this:
In the past few weeks, both sides have said that the initial amounts of the contract have been agreed upon, but the structure of the bonus/guaranteed money is the issue. I believe them more than any of the media, knowing how Al doesn't like to "report" on the negotiation issues. I believe we will see a deal of 6 years, $64+ million, with $28 million guaranteed with some money being paid back if he gets in trouble with Johnny Law, or he is cut due to lack of performance. What is going to be the exception on the latter is the "learning curve." How much time will Al give J-Russ in the learning curve?
I think 2 seasons as a starter should be suffice.

Here's another scenario to think about.
The Raiders are releasing their first Depth Chart today, for Saturday's game against Arizona.
What if they bombshell everyone with the signing of JRuss? Possibility?
I just dreamt, errrrr, heard that this is what they are going to do; right after they cut Sapp, Namdi, Washington, and Lechler. ;D

Nate, the Raiders aren't actually taking $1 mil off every week, it was only an idea/suggestion by Kirwan. I think it's a good idea, if Russell's alleged new agent wants to hold out as well.

With this alleged new agent I suppose we can throw everything we've heard out the window, with regards to any amounts or structures being agreed upon. Yep, another 5 days or so and hopefully SOMETHING happens.

This is the way I see it. At this point Lock, Metz & Malinovic are negotiating for their own interests and not their client's. That is extremely bad business practices, and could even open them up for a law suit if Russell can claim damages (but he'd need a hell of lawyer to claim damages after walking away with 31 mil). Russell's interests aren't purely money. His desire is to have an NFL career. Lock, Metz & Malinovic are negotiating the money interest, but not the professional interest. Since the professional interest is apparently off the table (otherwise Russell would be in camp by now), the agency is only negotiating the heafty percentage of money they will take off the top of the contract (likely in excess of a million dollars).

If they hold Russell out all season, and he returns to the draft, there is no way that Russell will get anywhere near the money that's being talked about now. Not only could the NFL change the rules for signing rookies, Russell will be facing added competition for the draft in 2008. Teams will be looking at drafting one of the newly elligable QBs, or drafting Russell who refused to sign for 31 mil in guaranteed money. Guess which one they'll pick. Russell could drop out of the first day of the draft (unless, and of course, the NFL changes the draft rules also). The point is, he'd never get the money that is currently on the table. This is how an agency can really screw their client.

Most likely they are now considering holding Russell out until the season is underway. If they do that, they have damaged Russell's career by denying him the opportunity of becoming a first year starter. I agree with Kirwin. I hope Al starts taking money off the table. This would also have the effect of providing a record for damages should Russell decide to thank his agents in court.

We all seem to be forgetting the most important rule about the Raiders; they don't tell anyone anything. So, all the rumors are just that.

What we do know is Russell remains unsigned, for whatever reason. I can't imagine Russell holding out too much longer, and certainly not for the season. The consequences are too great. Why would a sure Heisman candidate leave college after his junior year only to sit at home? (He should go back to college and learn something.)

His agents want a reputation? If Russell doesn't sign, they'll have one... and it won't be good.

No, there's way too much at risk for both Russell and his agents. And for those who believe Russell's agents are working in their best interests and not Russell's... duh! Welcome to the real world.

let's look at it this way: everybody loses if this guy continues his holdout. the raiders are the real losers if he goes back into the draft. russell will STILL get his, even at a lower rate from whichever team ends up with him if the raiders don't. but the raiders lose BIG TIME because they have no compensation for losing that #1 pick. the nfl will NOT reward them another one based on their inability to sign russell. so we will end up with the short end. the bottom line is, either he signs and soon or we're screwed in the long run!

If I were Russell I'd be scared to get in the car and go to the store. You're sitting on a nearly 30 mill lottery ticket that has a big asterisk on it... not reedable if you have an accident before you sign contract. That's leverage for our side, cuz I kow Russell doesn't have that big of an insurance policy on him self.
If, as they say, the truth lies somehwere in the middle of all the lies and leaks, then the low range leaked by Metz & co was surely the leak that we only offered something slightly better than Alex Smith's deal (probably true, our initial offer... just a starting point for us in negotiations). Then we leaked their high range (the 40 mil leak, proabbly true but just a starting point for Metz & Co, neither side expecting to get their initial offers, but leaking the info makes both sides look bad). Then things probably moved to 35 mil high and somewhere around C Johnson's contract low, once CJ signed. So that put us at between 28 and 35 mil... the grand canyon as one "insider" called it. Well, now another insider is saying we're a "bay" apart, so I assume it's moved to 29 mil or so on our part and 32 or so on theirs.
It's all ego & anger driven now... the agent wants to be the first to get a 30 mil guarantee, which is exactly what everyone thought this year's first pick, a QB, could fetch. And Al probably doesn't want to be the one that gave up the fast ball to that 30 million home run. I bet all the structure an options sticking points are BS. I bet it all has come down to Al wanting 29 mil and them wanting 30 mil guaranteed. That's probably how senseless this has become.
But J Russ, I wouldn't be playing any pick-up basketball games while you wait this thing out.

i see we signed oj santiago back. they were looking at jolley too, but nothing ever came of him.
it looks like we also signed larry brown (DT, rookie).
i thought i read somewhere that we were one of the teams that wanted to look at simeon rice? could be wrong though. anyone hear the same, or did i dream it?

RaiderNate75:

Simeon Rice played with Sapp so that might be a good move....but he will be released later because they are older than CoachKiff....

Also there is CorySimon released from Indy with a brand new ring....but there again he is too old to play for CaochKiff....

RT:

Point understood....I will just try to pretend that disturbance does not exist while I wait for my new "ShotGun" to come in da mail...

i thought corey simon was on IR the entire '06 season. is a player who is on IR qualified to receive a superbowl ring if he didn't do anything to help his team win it? does anyone know?

RaiderNate:

My understanding is that there was considerable concern that Rice wouldn't be able to pass a physical. He has a bum knee if memory serves.

It also seems to me that one of the East Coast teams took a solid look at Rice but they weren't interested for the same reason.

But it does appear that, with the exception of Sapp, the DT position is still unstable. But it is possible that after some of the roster reduction dates some additional help will become available. We'll have a better idea of where we actually are after the game on Saturday.

Hey "idiot" time to take the W sticker off the car, brother. I live in bama and even here the damn things have become an endangered species... and you could hardly find a car without one three years ago.
As RT said, back to football.. freakin chiefs are in trouble... big trouble. I smell blood.

corey simon was cut because he couldn't pass a physical with the colts. then the next day they loose booger macfarland.
i think with simeon rice, the titans have the best shot at getting him, even if he comes and visits the silver and black.
anywho, can't wait to get jruss in the mix, and see how he does against culpepper and mccown. he's pretty much already beaten walter before stepping on the field.

What a waste of recycled paper. The faidas WILL fail again, big al (MR.) davis (heavy on the mister) will manage to blow all of your dreams out to sea. You loyal "nationals" WILL see another season of sub-par football with 3 worthless qb's who will leave their collective stain on the "team" of insignificance and inability to deliver the "deep" passing game that the dicktator demands. You WILL remain unbeaten in your championship position of WORST "TEAM" IN THE NFL! nothing more. Keep dreaming babies, defend the nation! Where's "j-bust" when you need him? 0-16...

Remember fella's, all great championship organizations that fall will eventually stand tall and stronger.

I stand by my statement in that we will be in the playoffs this year. The signing of key veterans Rhodes, Darius, G. Warren, and D-Pep, and the retention of J. Porter will make us better on both sides of the ball. Our o-line has got to bring it this year. The Dee will easily be tops after a stellar performance last year.

Art had to go because the game passed him by, and his unwillingness to make adjustments during critical junctures of a game cost us some close victories. I appreciate his loyalty to the org, but his time was up. This season is make or break for Jordan. Kiffin may get coach of the year.

We should easily be 11-5 or 12-4.
