Five Postgame Takes
1. It’s a start. We were one missed tackle away from getting the ball back with a lead and five minutes left to burn. We proved a lot of things on Sunday—that we can score touchdowns, that we can move the chains in a variety ways, that we can mount a comeback, and even that we can throw the long ball (when we try). Welcome back to the 21st century.
2. McCown connected on 15 of 20 pass attempts for 140 yards and no interceptions in first half amid a hail of boos and chanting for Daunte Culpepper. I guess that’s what a 75 percent completion rate will get you in
Compared to last year’s offense, the coaching, playcalling and execution were like the difference between junior high school and Harvard law school, so I can’t complain too much. But we failed to attempt one crucial thing: the long ball.
Only one of McCown’s first-half completions was for more than 15 yards, inclusive of yards after the catch (the exception being a 17-yard completion). None of the incompletions occurred downfield, either. In other words, we didn’t once try to throw the ball long in the first half, even though we’d set the table perfectly.
So while we earned 10 first downs during the half, we didn’t chew up sufficient yardage before the third-down percentages caught up with us. The result was Sebastian (Scholarship) Janikowski kicking off of the dirt, not once, not twice but three times—for zero points.
It wasn’t until the middle of the third quarter that we threw downfield, and with a magnificent result in a 42-yard completion to Curry that ignited the stadium and set up the first touchdown. From that point forward, however, we didn’t attempt another long ball. In other words, we waited too long to try it, and when it worked, we didn’t try again.
It’s hard to say whether or not this was solely a playcalling issue, or if McCown himself was choosing to play it safe as well. But something that needed to happen didn’t happen, and we paid a stiff price. With everything happening underneath, the Lions could just lay in wait with minimal threat of the big play that we proved we could execute.
3. Not that I’m saying I would have chosen (or that I would still choose) McCown over Culpepper. But until late in the game—after the chanting for Daunte Culpepper had subsided, and before he was pressed into urgent action by our defense—McCown proved to be quite capable. If the defense and Janikowski had done their jobs, McCown’s performance would have been good for enough a victory.
I literally saw Roy Williams angle across our end zone unabated and unattended prior to catching his touchdown pass. That’s just one example of many defensive breakdowns yesterday.
4. They say that KSFO’s postgame radio show is broadcast from Everett & Jones BBQ, but it might as well be coming from the Kremlin. Rich Walcoff, George Atkinson and David Humm have been afflicted with a terminal case of homer-itis. They invite callers to vent, then they shut them down with variations on two stock responses: “Have you ever played the game?” or “What the fan doesn’t understand is…”
It’s not a sports talk show. It’s a shameless exercise in propaganda and mind control. The low point yesterday came when a kid called to vent about Janikowski. He was asked how old he was and if he was a kicker himself, then mocked with a little ditty about “calling back when he grows up" and lectured about how hard it is to kick off the dirt. Funny, the Lions’ Jason Hanson didn’t have any trouble kicking off the dirt. Jason Hanson didn’t have any kickoffs imitate a banana. Jason Hanson didn’t suck last year like Janikowski (who was dead last in field goal percentage among kickers who attempted more than 10 kicks). Yet a 13-year-old kid gets slapped in the face for stating the obvious. Nice.
They had Kirk Morrisson on the show, and while I love Kirk Morrisson, he came down with a bad case of KSFO postgame syndrome, repeatedly stating that "Well, if we'd won this game, then we wouldn't be talking about all this." Yes, and if Metallica played with harmonicas and mandolins, we wouldn't call them heavy metal.
Here are the KSFO postgame ground rules: You can't talk about what just happened before your very eyes. You can't analyze the coaching or the performance, nor can you have an opinion. But other than that, it's wide open—as long as you've played the game.
5. We are a functional football team once again. Last year started off on a hopeless note. Yesterday, however, I felt hopeful. Big difference. I know that there is a lot of anger and frustration out there, and I share it. But we are pointed up, not down, and that's worth something .

Oh sure RT, as soon as I posted on the game you make your new Take. :)
Blanda did it, so I had to do it this time.

To quote Al Davis; "The QB must go down, and he must go down hard!"
That didn't happen much on Sunday. We need to get more pressure on the QB, especially on key downs. Blitz if you have to and stop being so conservative.
Aside from that, and other stuff already pointed out, I still feel like we're in pretty good shape. Lots of positives. The good news is there are not a lot of teams out there who pose match-up problems to us the way the Lions do. Most of the time we'll be able to play our base D, man-man with our best players on the field.
The Lions were kind of an anomaly. They got us playing zone with a bunch of backup CBs running around confused. I have no doubt our D will recover and play like they normally do. And obviously our O is going to at least do SOMETHING, so we'll be alright. Denver must pay for what has happened.

My takes...
I'd release Janakowski today, and pick up anybody with a pulse on the waiver wire. What the hell does Janokowski do with his off season. It certainly isn't spent working on his craft.
I usually get the PC version of Madden football, and I've noticed the game is precient. In my Madden football game Jano only hits around 58%.
The special teams did not put in a good showing.
McCown isn't the guy. As Sapp says, you can find stats to show anything. The only thing that counts is how many points you put up on the board, and how many points you keep the other side from getting. Anything else is just a conversation starter. McCown is not a playmaker, and he can't get this team into the endzone. We need Culpepper.
I was looking for the good news in this game, but I keep getting hung up on the fact that the only team that played worse than the Lions in 2006 was the Raiders - and the Lions beat us by 15 points in the first game of 2007.
There was a sideline catch by Curry early in the game for a first down. It was ruled that Curry stepped out of bounds before posession. That's not what I saw. Kiffin should have called a replay.
Curry, the TEs, and Griff were the only consistant receivers.
We have a very long way to go. Long enough so that my prediction of 7 - 10 wins this season is reduced to 3 - 5.
There was improvement, but only in that the Raiders seem to opperate more like a pro team instead of high school team, but not a very good pro team.
On the bright side, I saw a lot of problems with the donkeys in their game against the Bills. All the same, we'll be 0 - 2 after next week.
Leaving the field so short does not help either, I wish now that they would have punted or gone for it on 4th. down, rather than tried the 3 field goals, god only knows!
I guess next week will be a great indication for us to know wether it's going to be a long or short season!
Down field is good!
Our defense needs to put more pressure on the qb and the secondary needs to play like Fabian Washington did on that battered down pass against Johnson.

I saw a fire in the Raiders during the 3rd quarter that I don't ever remember seeing before. Say what you want about McCown but he was pretty inspiring after that 1st TD. Was it enough? No. But I think they will take this loss as a slap in the face by a team that created unique match-up problems. From what I see the character of this team will allow us to have a pretty good season dispite an early loss to notoriously bad (but now good) team.
Re: Jano, I was pretty pissed at the time. But one was blocked by the best FG blocking team in the league. And only one was a blatant miss that should've been made.
It may not be too early to throw in Daunte, but I think it's too early to cut Jano and assume the season will be a failure, just another 4-12 suck-fest. We're going to be fine. We're going to win.

I agree a lot with RT here... I saw lotsa improvements on O... the D looked too over confident, and the playcalling on both sides of the ball was too conservative for my taste.
The ST's are still a burden for like the 20th straight year... maybe just a slight improvement there.
I want to see how this team and coaching staff reacts next week before giving up on 7 or more wins.
Sounds like JR will sign today... maybe Al saw enough of McCown to know we need help?
That left a bad taste in my mouth; what I saw was a team who can still find multiple ways to lose a game against one of the worst teams in the league.
The offense definitely looks better than last for whatever that's worth. I still think we should have played Daunte.
Our D seems to be a bit overrated.
If we don't win this week it could get ugly quick...if we don't win in two weeks, well I won't even get into that now.

Schefter says the Russell talks went well and they're meeting this morning to hammer it out. They want to get him into the Wednesday practice. Watch the headlines!

"I'd release Janakowski today, and pick up anybody with a pulse on the waiver wire."
BR, I'm disappointed too, but after watching the kicking situation here in Dallas over the last couple of years let me assure you of one thing: The pool isn't deep and even the "big dollar kickers" can let you down.
Adding to my previous...
The only spark I saw all day from the Raiders was in the 3rd quarter. That means they played one good quarter of football in their first game of the season. Don't get me wrong. That's a deffinate improvement. In the entire 2006 season, I thought we played maybe four good quarters of football. If they just stay on this pace, we'll get 16 good quarters of football this year.
It seems to me that there is still an underlying attitude on this team that all the difference comes from a new coach and playbook. It doesn't actually come from players playing better and more emotional football. At some point they're going to have to realize that it's on them.
Bottom line is there was improvement. I don’t understand the 57 yard attempt off the dirt after he had missed from 46. Hopefully Kiffin will learn from that.
As for Janikowski, I recall him being better under Gruden. The worked on slowing down his approach. Would someone get this information to Kiffin and tell him to look at the tapes. Also, build a dirt infield at the practice facility for him. If it’s the dirt then let him practice on it. To me that’s a no brainer.
I’ll have to check the tape, but on a play before one of the field goal attempts, I remember Miller being wide open for a probable touchdown, but McCowan was locked in on the wide out and didn’t check down properly.
Miller did drop one, but he and Masden were open over the middle several times over the middle. McCowan became a little fixated with his first option. But, like I said, it’s from memory and I will have to check the tape.
Having said that, three trips into the red zone – three touchdowns. Curry is working on All-Pro.

I saw nothing positive yesterday. Losing to the Lions is unacceptable. I'm sick of this crap! I'm glad to hear that the crow was chanting Dante's name (the volume was turned down at the bar I was at). Culpepper should be our starter. If he had been yesterday, we'd all be slapping each other five and talking about what a great season we're going to have. But no, we decided to stay with the status quo, bad decisions. So what if the Donks struggled yesterday. They still found a way to win and if we show up with another pathetic display like that again, ole ferret face won't have to look very hard to find a way to beat us. The only thing I liked about yesterday was the Chefs game. At least the Chefs are worse than us. The town of KC is officially on suicide watch.
Psycho said, "I saw a fire in the Raiders during the 3rd quarter that I don't ever remember seeing before." I agree Psycho, too bad we didn't show up the previous 2 quarters, nor the 4th.
I'm pretty bent about the loss, and am not happy with it. McCown started forcing throws, which I think is the difference between he and Culpepper; because we couldn't stop the Lions defensively. I don't think Culpepper forces throws the way he did. That cost us just as much as the defense.
BTW, thanks for the zone, no blitz defense Ryan. Now get your head out of your ass and start running the defense.
The good news, the way the Doncos played yesterday we should wind up 1-1 next week, but after yesterday, I'm not hanging my hat on that.
It's funny what thefreakingpole just said about kicking, because my idea is cut Jano and sign Mike Vanderjagt. Rumor has it he's thinking about signing on with the CFL. But too many points over the last few years have been left off the board. On the brightside, if Jano does have a mental thing about kicking off the dirt, the A's season is fast approaching being over.
I know it's probably already been mentioned (I haven't had a chance to read all the comments in the previous post) but I have to think had Kiffin just made a decision regarding the QB after the final preseason game and given him the majority of the snaps with the first team our offense would have clicked sooner. And I don't care who he decided to pick. I was fine with McCown. And a little disappointed in the crowd who were chanting for Duante.
I wasn't at the game; can someone tell me if Porter was being consistently double-teamed? I only remember one play he was part of. If he wasn't being doubled, seems like he's continued from the preseason of being a ghost.
I have to admit to being a bit disappointed overall in the Raiders, just doing enough to snatch defeat out of the jaws of victory. Hopefully that changes starting next week against the Broncos. Should be a tough trial for the boys in silver and black. Though they have problems, their running game looks stout... as usual.
(toni, who can't for some reason post under my "identity")
Good takes RT. The KSFO thing is an insult to the fans and the team.
I agree with Psycho that the Lions present match-up problems for the Raiders D that other teams will try to duplicate, but simply won’t have the personnel. We struggled last year in zone coverages. Remember too, our D started out slow last year.
Regarding the conservative playcalling, Kiffin seem to imply in his post-game press conference that McCown was checking down his receivers and the Lions forced him into taking what was available, i.e., short passes. However, it seemed to me that he focuses too much on his primary target and is unable to check down. He looks lost in the pocket, but does well on the move, something I believe Calico Jack pointed in a previous post.
I’m not ready to throw in the towel just yet. This is a savvy coaching staff and the players believe in them. Let’s try and remember where we’re coming from. This game showed lots of promise on offense and the defense will be fine. Like RT said, we were perhaps one tackle away from sitting on the ball with the lead late in the 4th qtr. Not much consolation, but I believe we lost one we should have won, and we will win some we should lose....
The KSFO philosophy has always been, "agree with us or don't bother calling in," so the Raiders' current post-game show, I guess, falls right in line.
When 1050 was the Raiders' station, things were kind of interesting in that a lot of fans called in and displayed just how knowledgable Raider fans are. But they shut that down and stopped giving Raider fans a voice.

My rant:
1. Improvement, yes (how could we not after last year's staff?) but still awful. It was the Lions at home. Should always be a win. I'm embarrassed.
2. McCown, while he did okay, is not a starter that generates optimism in your team. He is not a guy that lifts the play of other's. He's not an NFL starter.
3. I knew it but didn't want to be negative: our pass defense success last year had a whole lot more to do with the fact that people didn't have to throw on us, rather than any dominance on our part. When opposing teams need to score, they do.
4. Moss gets off. Salt in our wounds.
5. I've said it before and will say it again: Jano was an absolute horrific 1st round mistake. He is painfully average. Please cut him just to give a us a FRESH look. Out with the losers and in with new faces for crying out loud. Oh, was the worthless turd kicking from the dirt? Boo-hoo. It never seems to hurt the other team's kickers.
6. Jano Part 2: Mr Shawn Alexander who unbelievably went after jano in the draft, had another great game. I'll never get over this.
7. Mr Sam Williams. Broken record time... Sam had less production as the other linebackers. What's freakin new? Morrison nine tackles, Howard five, Williams... three. He is so disgustingly unproductive, yet a starter for life with us. We don't even bother to bring in real competition for him. here Sam, you have the job foever... just put the uniform on and don't worry about ever doing anything in the game. really, Al just likes you, go enjoy yourself every game.
8. Fargus. I hate this guy. Has no business in the nfl much less year in and year out getting carries for us. What was wrong with Echinobe or whatever his name is? New coach, same cast of shitty players. Williams, fargas, Sebatian the Fat, et al. Will we ever cut these clowns?
9. And cut grove too. Was manhandled by the Lions DT. I think the verdict is in on this guy. Grove was a bust. Three years later and he's still here, meanwhile my boy Moses gets a 30 day tryout and a $600,000 check. Go figure.
10. And back to the biggest goat of all: the pass defense. Can we stop all the badass talk about Washington and namdi now? Average at best. While we're at it let's admit something... every year we think that we have the best talent in the nfl, we just haven't tapped it and we always say THIS year will be the year. BS. We need to look hard at our roster and realize that there's not a lot of talent on it. And to make matters worst here we sit on this year's draft with the #1 not in camp, a #3 cut, #4 unable to play and #5 cut. That's an "F".
Oh well, we still have the amazing John Bowie for Moss to show for things. Whoopeee f*&^ing do!!!
Re: Sam Williams
I'll have to confirm this. But I suspect that he just wasn't in there a whole lot to put up numbers. They had to be in dime & nickel most of the game, and he would be the odd man out in most of those situations since Morrison & Howard are better.
Psycho
Bama7:
Thank you, Bama7, for showing exactly how Raider fans are supposed to feel after a loss. But, while I was very disappointed in the team effort, I don't agree with you on a few points.
While I didn't agree that we should draft Jano in the fist round (because I felt that Nedney was good for us - and he proved it in the clutch against KC), I was still okay with it because of how good Jano was in college. Jano is a hindsight complaint, but we still need to replace him.
As for Williams, he's not going to be in on as many plays as Morrison or Howard because he's the first LB pulled from any game. He's not a coverage LB. On any passing down, he comes out. Morrison is in the game for almost every snap, so his stats are going to be way up there, and Howard is usually still in when we go to the big nickle or the straight nickle. So whenever you compare Williams against the other two, you have to take that into consideration.
My major complaint was that we went through the whole first half looking like we were attempting to perform a dance for the first time. We got attitude somewhere in the middle of the 3rd Quarter and poured it on. But as soon as we took the lead, we went back to trying to learn the dance steps again.
I also don't have any problem with our DBs. And I think they'll come around. My problem is that they never unleashed any kind of a pass rush, and when you're dealing with Kitna you have to get in his face. The book on Kitna is that he is extremely talented, but he can't deal with extreme pressure. He never got the pressure, so we got the full force of the talent.
RT,
Your posts echo my thoughts exactly, especially your words about the lame KSFO crew. I love the Raiders, but those homers totally sicken me. I stopped listening to them .
I wonder if Donovan Darius would've missed that critical tackle on McDonald? In my view, Hiram Eugene and Chris Johnson both were a mystery in making this team as they pretty much got burned repeatedly in pre-season games.
Janikowski has cost us games and playoff berths in the past and he's not improving with age. Hopefully, he's a lesson for all Raider staff in the future to NEVER DRAFT A KICKER IN THE FIRST ROUND. Did he actually miss-hit the first miss, or was it blocked, as the TV crew stated?
The Raiders played a pretty clean, sound game penalty-wise. That's a bright spot, but maybe Sims should hold a little if it means our QBs blind side is safer.
And please, NO MORE 3-MAN RUSHES! The go-ahead Detroit TD was ridiculous. Kitna had a minute to throw. I'm not as high on Coach Ryan as others are because of things like that. There was a general lack of pressure today against a mediocre QB. Why didn't he adjust and throw in some blitzes?
I'm afraid Bama is right about Grove. He gets pushed around a heck of a lot. Washington needs to also prove to me that he was worthy of a #1 pick.
In summary though, losing to the Lions at home is not good. And remember, while Jerry Porter and Mike Williams get shut down, that the Raiders had a chance to draft Roy Williams a few years ago and Calvin Johnson this year.
X-
If we drafted Roy Williams and Calvin Johnson, we'd be the Lions. I not trying to defend what turned out to be a weak draft, but I still think we picked right at #1... we just can't get him signed.
As far as penalties, they were a problem. Gallery was caught illegally downfield on two pass plays. Who does that?
Echemandu was on the inactive list yesterday. As far as I know he wasn't hurt.
Did you guys see Tom Brady calling Moss a role model for the Pats receivers? Yeah, he's a role model alright. How a player can half-ass it and quit on one team and nobody says anything about it when he plays well for another. Now that's a role model.
All the media outlets are saying that JRuss will sign soon, sometime this week even. Whoop dee doo. The plan I envisioned was him coming into camp, learning the system, and then starting next year with Bush in the backfield. Then in next year's draft we could look on solidfying the O line. Now it looks like we're back to square one and we'll need a bunch of DBs as well as linemen, and don't forget that DT.
I get the feeling from some of the posts here and around the Raider Nation that Russell has made his task that much tougher. Now instead of coming in with the benefit of the doubt of the fans, he's going to have to earn even that much. A lot of the anger over yesterday's loss could carry over to him especially if he struggles, as most rookie QBs do.
I'm officially sticking my neck out. I may end up paying for this having to eat crow.
I believe we will beat the Donkos this week.
I'll admit. About 2:00 from the half I had my doubts about this team. After such a great offseason how could they lay an egg? McCown was putting up numbers but we couldn't score, and all 3 phases were basically getting beat.
I'll tell you what though, they showed heart (and not just for one quarter). They fought back. We were a few plays (or a few less turnovers) away at the end. Kiffin showed the poise of a veteran. Now I look around and see a bunch of fans down on them because we lost the first game on a lonnnnng road back to respectability.
What happened to "I'm In"?
Heart does not equal productivity. We were productive for only one quarter. But I saw a team play with heart for 4 quarters. You need proof? Look at Morrison & Curry. So I feel like we'll bounce back strong, play OUR game instead of this zone D crap, and take out our frustrations of the Donkos without a doubt.
I'm Still In.
Psycho
nyraider:
Unfortunately linemen getting flagged for being illegally down field on a pass is common for OL learning the cut blocking system for the first time. I'm actually surprised we didn't see more of it in the preseason. The problem is that sometime you have to chase those guys you're going to cut, and you follow them into the defensive backfield.
Psycho:
I'm still in. But I'll be more in after next week if your prediction comes true. I want to see if they learn from this game and improve on what they've learned. That happened at no time last year. In fact, last year, we seemed to hold onto mistakes like they were mana from heaven.
But I did see, except for the defense, a team that was adjusting on the fly.
The Raiders just didn't seem fully prepared for this game, almost as if they were overlooking it. I sincerely hope that Kiffin did not look past this game for Denver. Division wins are certainly the most urgent things for us this year, but there are 10 other games I'd like to see the team ready to play.
We're still in, Psycho. I'll never jump ship, but I am tired of swallowing sea water every time the good ship Raiders goes down. Aren't you?
As I said earlier, I was disappointed, but not discouraged. We are on the right track. Perhaps the defense took the Lions a little too lightly. I’m beginning to think Jano’s problems are mental. If that’s the case we don’t need him, and I was one of his biggest defenders in the earlier debate.
As hard as it will be, I’m going to look at the tape of the game again tonight. There’s something nagging at me about his kicking and McCowan’s check downs.
H
h:
The good news is that this year we HAVE check downs. I thought that McCown took far too long to go through them. He kind of has Walteritis. He holds the ball way too long, and then winds up hitting the RB standing on the line of scrimage anyway.
Okay, now here's a winner from PFT.
"Chris Mortensen of ESPN reports that several veteran NFL players, including some Raiders, have told quarterback JaMarcus Russell that he will lose respect in the locker room if he caves to the contract demands of owner Al Davis."
Such a rumor, uttered with complete and total foolishness, could only have come from Mortensen and ESPN. Nobody else is that breathtakingly stupid.
Blanda/NY
I suppose our opinions are not too far appart then. I agree that they didn't look fully prepared, and yes I hate the taste of salt water.
One big part of it (literally) was that bastard Rogers pushing Grove around with Newberry hurt. That allowed too much pressure on our QB having to contain him. By the way I thought McCown did a great job checking down. He beat many blitzes. Newberry getting hurt, we were not prepared for.
Our secondary wasn't fully prepared to play Dime Zones. They had to have known Martz was going 4WR most of the game. Sh*t, even I was saying Martz would exploit this. Plus Starks was out so it was that much worse.
I guess my main point though is there is no reason to panic yet, or even get too pissed. Besides, it's counter productive to have the fans turn on them when they're just getting this Kiffin thing rolling. There is no doubt in my mind they'll get better & better every week. It's going to be ugly for a while and we just have to ride it out.
Psycho
To clarify the check down thing. When they blitzed & McCown was in immediate pressure, he checked down without hesitation and very well executed.
On the other hand I understand the criticism. He gets tunnel vision out there. He throws down field in tight coverage with guys closer to the 1st down mark (short) who would obviously catch it.
Psycho
Psycho-
There were a couple or three screen passes in blitzing situations that really impressed me. I think about the playcalling and overall scheme we saw yesterday and reflect on last year.... there's no resemblance. We all have to be patient and let Kiffin run with this a while.
On the defensive side of the ball, we relied way too much on our coverage, sometimes pass-rushing with only three lineman. That’s a glorified prevent defense which, as we all know, is useless (and that’s an understatement). Robby needs to take a page out of Buddy’s handbook and blitz more. Kitna was way too comfortable in the pocket.
My view really hasn’t changed as a result of yesterday. This isn’t going to happen overnight, and maybe not in a single season. I’m in!
We would've been better off running a base 4-3 man to man than that BS. Make them play to our strenghts. I would be OK with the safeties and corners one on one with the 4 WRs if it means actual pressure on the QB. It's a risk but at least we have our best guys out there. Rushing 4 & blitzing 1 or 2 LB's once in a while, with the remaining LB's playing zones in hot spots, or in certain situations leaving a safety in Cover 1 (based on offensive formations). All that BS passing was in these areas close to the 1st down markers where a zone LB would be roaming.
Instead, we had #31, #26, & #37 running around like chickens with their heads cut off and our whole D was thrown out of whack as a result. If you hit that QB enough they'll start taking those WRs out for more protection!
Oh I forgot, I'm being positive right now. I'm IN!
Psycho
To clarify, while the Raiders didn't play a totally clean game penaltywise, 50 yards worth of penalties is definitely an improvement.
And I don't care if you have 8 DBs named Willie Brown back there in coverage. If you rush 3 guys and give the QB all day to throw, you'll get burned again and again.
Pressure on the passer is the key to good pass defense! Period. Ryan should know better.
Zone defenses just aren't Raider football. I've always viewed zones as like saying, "don't hurt me too bad." Zones are okay if you're trying to keep the game in front of the defense in order to make the other team use the clock. But we were never in that position.
I've had a problem with Ryan going with soft defense way too often since he's been here, except for last year. Last year we discovered our Defensive front four could put up some healthy pressure. So what does Ryan do this year? He starts going with 3 man fronts.
So next week we face Cutler. Cutler is a sophemore and not all that experienced. We should pressure the hell out him to get him to make mistakes. We'll see if we do.
So here we are with the Everett story from the Broncos/Bills game. The word is that he's likely paralyzed for life. However, there is one thing that you will never hear even hinted at even once. That there is a "criminal element" in Denver.
However, it won't be too awfully long before they claim, again, that Tatum crippled Stingley intentionally. It will likely come up in this context. "This just shows how dangerous the game can be. It's not like when Tatum cut down Darryl Stingley."
The Everett incident is heartbreaking. I was watching the game and saw it happen. Didn't seem like an overly violent hit, but you just never know on special teams. It's definately the dark side of the game. My step father was paralyzed from the nipple line down, Everett's whole life is going to change. Completely. Hopefully he'll have use of his arms, it makes it so much easier.
I woulnd't wish it on my worst enemy.
:-(
And though I was disappointed with the Raiders and certianly the outcome, I'm in!
Toni:
I should have also said that whenever something like this happens it's a shame. And Everett is going to require an awful lot of support from his family, his friends, his team, and the fans.
But I think nearly all team sports offer the danger of death or disfigurement. I've seen permanent brain damage in baseball and heartfailure in basetball. For that matter, drownings in water polo. And don't forget, Christopher Reeve (Superman) went down in a game of polo.
It's always tough, and it's never pretty. Everett has my prayers.
Bama7
Yes, terrible about the Bill's player. My prayers are with him and his family.
Blanda, way back at the top post you said you thought Nedney was good enough before Jano... agree. When Nedney beat the chiefs it really turned us around. He should have been awarded the permanent job for that one game alone. If I remember correctly it knocked the Chiefs out of the playoffs and we finished 8-8. The start of the Gruden run on the playoffs.
Screw Jano- cut him today. Make a statement.
And I don't see why Culpepper isn't starting. Culpepper would give us a stronger aura. We'd be more respected and have a better chance of winning at Denver. I'm sorry, I just don't see McCown wininng at Denver.
Burgess was double teamed the whole game and still not much happening on the opposite side. When will we have a compliment over there. Clemons is a really good OLB/DE type. I suppose he can't play there on all downs huh?
The Everett incident is a tragedy. Any kind of spinal injury is pure misery. Maybe he can have a miracle, and he should be in our thoughts and prayers.
I was going to review the tape of the game, but my VCR evidently malfunctioned. All I get is static on it. Next time I’ll record it directly to DVD. I still think Miller was open more than he was thrown to. I wish I knew why quarterbacks insist on forcing throws to covered receivers when the tight end can move the chains.

realist - that's what i said a couple weeks ago re: russell. once this guy signs, we have to wait TWO years for his services! next year will be his rookie year.
Anon the Almighty Patsy Fan:
Where are you at??? No wonder he's been quiet today, check this out!
I just saw on NFL Total Access that the Pasties are under investigation my the NFL for a serious charge of CHEATING!
It's not even posted on NFL.com yet, I don't see it around to prove it yet. But apparently officials found a camera hidden on the Patsy sideline somewhere which they were apparently using to watch the Jets hand signals & things Sunday.
No wonder you won some games lately, freakin' cheaters!
They can reportedly be punished by heavy fines, suspensions, and even draft picks! Not to mention your "glorious dynasty" is forever tainted. Pending investigation of coarse (yeah right, we GOT you!).
Psycho
take - that was some serious homerism during the postgame. but you're just now realizing it? those guys have been like that for years. and that WAS pretty rude how they treated that kid, especially after their kicker made all 3 of his attempts.
this is what i am saying folks. these "legends", amy trask spin the company line. they talk out of their asses for al. jt the brick "used" to be impartial but now he works for the team so he pipes down on his strong comments.
i'm tired of people making excuses for janikowski. he's GOT TO GO! with that 9 points, it's still a winnable game. sloppy but winnable.
Psycho, that's exactly what I'm talking about. When he wasn't pressured he tried to do something spectacular instead of keeping the chains moving. When it's not there he should go immediately to his second or third choice in his progression.
On one it looked like Miller could have easily made it inside the twenty if not a touchdown.

It's not working for me yet, there might be too many people reading it. It's also all over Vikeings blogs & stuff.

Kiffin stated McCown "is the starter" (for next week). He also compared McCown to operating a joystick in a video game, implying he made all the right reads and reacted to all the D formations exactly how he was supposed to. Yikes! I must have missed something.
Read the ESPN article on the Patriots thing. According to league sources it's supposedly not the first time.
If that's so, screw draft picks and fines. Take games away from them. When Shanahan lied on his injury report to hide who his starting QB was going to be, they should have forfited the game.
If this is true, the Pats should forfit the game and all stats removed. And if coaches are involved they should be suspended for the entire season. That will put a stop to this crap.
When people tell me the Raiders cheated on the "Holy Roller" game, I tell them it's not cheating if they change the rule "after" you do it.
The article also mentioned "The league also is investigating some radio frequency issues that occurred during the game".
If they win the Super Bowl, they will only look at losing draft picks as a cost of doing business.
Take two or three game from them this season and they'll stop in a heartbeat and so will everyone else.
Quick pet peeve: I'm watching the Mondy Night game and man I really don't like the three man booth and in game interviews. I want to see the game. Take the booth to two and get rid of sideline reporters.
A little long winded, but these things really bug me.

Steve Corkran is reporting the Raiders and Russell have agreed "in principle" to a contract. The base amount is $31 million guaranteed. I found the link through profootballtalk.com.
Scorpio, I'm with you, and I wrote about the KSFO problem back in 2005 with a couple of takes, one titled "Earth to George," in which I wrote, "I don't want to hear George Atkinson putting lipstick on a toad," and another about how, when I was actually at the postgame show at Everett & Jones, George called out "the fans" and a "fan" literally rose up from one of the tables and gave it right back, which was absolutely classic.
Miller was open a few times and not thrown to, but the bigger concern was the receivers we got down field that were open and not thrown to. McCown made some poor decisions on a few throws (not just the picks) by dumping it off to a receiver or back short of the first down, but otherwise he played a decent game, and it sounds like Kiffin is sticking with him for week 2 at least.
I'm in with the "I'd rather see Culpepper" crowd right now because the few balls that McCown threw deep looked soft. That 42 yard completion to Curry drew a collective gasp from the crowd when it was thrown because the thing just floated in the air and Curry was double covered. The fact that he was able to leap and make the catch is more a testament to Curry's skill than the arm of McCown.
Overall it was disappointing, mainly due to the soft defense and the special teams. As mad as I want to be at Janikowski, one of those kicks got blocked and one of them was a 57-yard desperation kick. I'm still scratching my head on that one- after going 0-fer on the first two kicks, it seems silly to put your kicker out there for a really tough to make one.
My head's not down though. Our defense underachieved, but we started slow last year. Our offense, while not perfect, at least gave me hope when they were in there that they could produce. Even when we were down 8 points at the end there was hope in the crowd that we could pull out a long drive to tie the game. The fumble, and then the fumble (someone needs to tell our rookie TE that you FALL on the ball) took the wind out of the sails.
We've got work to do, but I feel much better about that work than I did after the season opener last year. The fact that we made adjustments at half time already puts us ahead of last year's team.
The roar of the crowd when we went ahead 21-20 was worth the travel and tickets. I love my team, and I love the nation that supports it. They'll be honest when you are bad, and they'll let the team know when they are unhappy, but they won't fade away.
Congratulations Raider fans. I thought for sure I would find some whining on this board about blaming the refs or blaming the NFL schedule makers about your team's loss to the lowly Lions. I am glad to see you taking your loss like men. I watched the Raiders/Lions game yesterday at a sports bar with my cousin and his Raider friends. It was fun seeing the Lions win since my cousin was already considering his team 1-0 heading into your game with Denver next weekend. Reality hit him and his friends like a ton of bricks when he realized the Raiders were still a bad football team. Yes, they actually look like a pro football team this year, but they look like a bad pro football team that is devoid of talent. This is going to be a long road back for you guys, I see your team as being a 2 to 3 year rebuilding project, and that is if Al lets Kiffin hang around for that long. If your team decides to play musical chairs again with the head coaching position, you will be right back to square one, and your team will still be cellar dwellers. Does Big Al have the patience? History says he does not.
RUSSELL SIGNS!!!!!
NO SHIT THIS TIME!

And I thought Patriot fan (that would be you) would come in here, acting like a chimpanzee at a cocktail party, throwing dung at the walls and making a mess of the appetizers. I guess we surprised each other, as your take is sensible enough.
Raidertake
I could be an obnoxious Patriots fan (and there are a ton, believe me I have been a long time season ticket holder) and brag about Lombardi's and division championships, but I feel no need to do that. The Patriots record and performance the past 7 years speaks for itself, they dont need me to brag about them. I could laugh at the Raiders for practically dumping Randy Moss into our laps, but I know, just like you do, that Randy plays only when he wants to play, and it is apparent that he wants to play for the Patriots. I expect Moss to have a pro bowl caliber year, because since this is a team that is going places, he will definitely be motivated. I just want to have football discussions. You may not like what I have to say some of the time, but I always speak the truth and I never hold back in my commentary. I call it like I see it. And the Raider fans I know have a hard time dealing with that.
Scorpio:
Now that is great news....so we can put all that behind us and just enjoy the season....All we need now is for Culpepper to start against the Donkos and for the Raiders to trade Walter for whatever we can get....Atlanta....TampaBay....
PantyRaider....Relief!!!
My biggest problem with Patriots fans is that they seem to think the NFL didn't exist until 2001. There's a self-righteousness that I don't see in other team's fans, including Colts fans, who seem to have a bit more perspective on their place in the NFL world, past and present.
Hey anonymous Patriot fan-
You may feel that you are above being an "obnoxious Patriot fan" but your actions speak for themselves. Go back and read your posts from yesterday during the game and try and wrap your head around just what kind of a "fan" you are. Recent history may have been kind to your team, but we all know it comes and it goes.
I watched the game on Sunday near some members of Calvin Johnson's family, and one of the things I heard from a Raider fan next to them is an example of what a true fan is-
"I hope he plays well today, but I hope we win."
The fact that you are trolling a blog for a team that you won't even play this year is a pretty good indication of your mentality. That's just reinforced by the lack of real thoughtful discussion on this game of football that the rest of us enjoy and your reliance on juvenile insults.
Do us all a favor and go find a Patriot board where you can join in the back patting, while justifying the recent allegations of signal stealing as whining by the Jets. I'm sure you'll work in some delightful Red Sox/Yankees banter into the mix.
You're finally gettin' it R.T., Just out of respect for a man who will admit that the faidas propaganda machine does exist, i;e. "ol' mushmouth atkinson" and the rest of that "tired" self patronizing post game crew shows me that you are an intelligent fan who is interested in a team and not a low life thugster image that too many of the faida fanatic base try to give a legitimate place in organized sports. I refer also to the likes of "artie the dwarf gigantinoooo", "jt the shizzle brick" etc., etc. It doesn't help to play that faida "nation" baloney either, it makes the true fans sound like a bunch of the booger eatin' morons that push the thugster, low life, gansta image that I am sure you and "X" and many other intelligent Raider fans DO NOT support or follow. The big al (MR.) davis is the "ultimate genius gift from god" image that many of your faida fanatics try to espouse doesn't do you any good, nor does the "jimmy the boy plunk", and "tommyboy mr flowers flores" MUST BE inducted into the H.o F. is a dead horse, you might take note that many Hall of famers your faida organization claims as raiders are indeed inducted as players from other teams, Ronnie Lott, Jerry Rice, Eric Dickerson, etc., etc. Where do you guys get off claiming these greats as faider Hall of Famers? I will try to give those of you insight from time to time as needed, you may hate me but TOO MANY faida fanatics are mouthing off against every other team and they need to be put in their place! Sorry but I still see it as 0-16, "miss kiffy" will be a no hit wonder why he evar got hired by the "genius"! Just keep believing, defend the "notion".
X,
you are totally correct man. those 3 man rush jobs are a complete waste of time, and a gift to any offense we face.
where does the caveman dream up this sh*t ? certainly not from his old man.
good old buddy used to bring everything, plus the kitchen sink up to the line, and after the Qb.
looks like caveman needs to make a call to his pop and get his head straightened out.
P.S. The 49ers are tied 10 to 10 at half, they have made bonehead mistakes but for the most part they have shown improvement, Frank Gore is tearing the Cardinals apart single-leggedly, win or lose the 49ers will do it with clas. Did you see the actions of the beloved "black-bung-hole" Sunday? If my team had fans like that I would personally ask that the stadium and team management remove that eliment from the stadium for the safety of the normal fans and their families. Would you allow your children to act like that?
i think its safe to say we all wanted culpepper to start this game. i don't know if anyone mentioned it and i apologize if i repeat it but it could be that mccown is being showcased for a possible trade.
lets face it, it's better for russell to learn from his "dad", and what i mean by that is a QB with similar skills and build to learn from than mccown or even walter the next 2 years. but i think walter stays. i know he's not a WC QB but because he's under contract for a couple more years. so i say mccown is the one that goes. i think he has more trade value anyway.
Judging from Kiffin's Q & A, it appears he went with McCown because he has a greater command of the offense. Kiffin alluded to the Raiders always being in in proper alignment, not missing audibles, taking what the defense gave him etc. The point that missing here is that Dante makes plays and a stronger arm allows for smaller windows. When McCown was late with his throws it was to late. In the end he fumbled once and threw two interceptions when one of the major reasons he won the starting job was because of his ability in the pre-season to avoid turnovers. I think Kiffin is outsmarting himself here. You have a proven QB that knows how to win games and you go with that choice over the better game manager.
The feeling going in seemed to be, we have an effective defense, if we manage the game and don't turn it over we'll be in it. My feeling is the Raiders job on Sunday is to win games as opposed to trying not to lose them. The "D" didn't come with it's A game and the "O" didn't get behind the QB possesing the most GAME.
This week they're repeating the same mistake by starting McCown again. We may win in spite of it but... we could make it easier on ourselves.
FYI, Russell signed this evening and will be at practice Wednesday
Dear JaMarcus Russel,
Welcome to the Raider Nation. You didn't sign when we wanted you to, you won't be ready when we had hoped, but you did do one thing that I think we all will appreciate for many years to come...you proved Peter King to be completely full of s*@!. Thanks again, and hurry up and start studying the playbook and game film. You've got a lot of catching up to do.
Bama7
Just ignore any non-Raider post. Don't read it. We'll all respond when the Patriots get knocked out again. Just like last year. The colt game last year was the best I watched. Brady can't get 'er done in Indy and the vauted Belechik D was shredded!
Welcome Russell. Sadly it looks like next offseason we'll need a RT, LT, C, WR, OLB & possibly a SS. This year is a final tryout for Porter, Jordan, Green, Simms, Williams & Schweigert.
These should in way be on our team next year: Grove, Fargas, Brayton & Jano.
I wish we'd bring Darius back and slide Huff into permanent FS.
Bama7
Last part should have said that Grove, Fargas, Brayton & Jano should in NO WAY be on our team next year.
Ok, guys I was driving to work in my silver pickup with black trim having a hot cup of caffeine when I had a revelation.
Forget Robert Gallery being down field twice and forget the failure of Lamont Jordan in picking up the blitzes. Forget Russell agreeing to a contract. One of the topics of discussion was what our quarterback was doing when he had time to make his reads. There was even an insinuation that at times he took too much time and was fixated.
Do you realize what that means? At what point last year could we have complained about that? Believe me when I say this, the one thing I was worried about for Sunday was keeping McCowan upright. Say what you want, but Detroit has one of the best, if not the best, best pairs of defensive tackles in the league.
Even when Newberry was out the protection was decent. It had breakdowns, in the middle but overall it looked much improved. While still a work in progress, I’m encouraged.
The Gallery penalties are correctable, but I’m not sure about Jordan’s blocking. Gallery’s miscues came from being aggressive and not being used to having a quarterback who can get out of trouble. When McCowan took off Gallery figured he was running and went down field looking for someone to smack. The other penalty is easy to correct, “when the runner is down, stay off the dog pile”.
You know me, always looking for positives.
H
P. S. When your team gets caught up in a possible cheating scandal you generally have to come back with your hat in your hand as my grandfather would have said. Just putting things into proper perspective.
Russell will likely be a Raider today and probably be at the Raiders practice Wed. He'll receive a two-week roster exemption, but ultimately the Raiders will probably only keep three QBs on the Roster. So, which QB is out?
McCown is Kiffin's boy, who compares Josh's quarterbacking to a video game joystick in his well-processed decision-making skills.
Culpepper is Al's boy, who compares him to Jim Plunkett in his transition years with the Raiders.
Walter seems like the obvious choice, however, his salary is a pultry half million. Walter is a bargain and he's under contract for the next couple years.
Anyone want to try and make this call?
Despite the bargain salary, Walter should be the odd man out.
If the Raiders wanted to save Culpepper's $3.2m salary, they needed to dump him before the 1st game. Plus, Culpepper seems to be an obvious mentor for Russell, who share many similar attributes.
At well under $3million, McCown's salary is reasonable for a quality backup.
Like Tui before him, Walter doesn't really fit the current system. Ironically, Tui is now a good fit with Kiffin and the new Raiders offense.
I like to comment further on the Everett tragedy. One, my heart goes out to him and his family. It's a shame something like this should happen for a game. Yes, I love the game of football but on the anniversary of this aweful day, I'm reminded that it is only a game. That being said, I think we're going to see a lot more tragedies like Everett. I saw several hits on Sunday where I said "I can't believe that guy got up from that".
Starting McCown = Losing
h-roller - Sucks for Everett. That goes way beyond football. Something like that happens and there are no 'teams' anymore, just a whole lot of people in shock. I know what you mean by having hard hits lately. Even Kitna took a shot by #31 that I thought would hurt him. Then you look around the league and people are dropping like flies. The Ravens & Giants especially are torn to shreds. We've been pretty lucky.
NY - A week ago I would've said Culpepper was the unlucky odd man out just based on the $3.2 mil but he looks safe for now. My vote is for Walter. The other guys simply give us the better chance to win, and we have the cap room to make it work.
Psycho
Amen Roller.
I'm wearing my 9/11 tee shirt right now. I only wear it once a year. I also think of the guys I served with who have taken bullets or still have shrapnel in them or their names appear on black granite walls. And those who are still serving who give us the freedom to argue back and forth about games played by millionaires.
Sorry guys, deep down inside I’m just a sentimental old softie.
H
Hey, Patriots Anonymous:
Holly shit, you sound almost reasonable. And you're absolutely right that Moss plays when he wants to. He "wanted" to play for the Raiders his first year here, and he grew the alligator arms later.
But I think you and the press might just be overrating his performance last Sunday just a bit. Nobody ever said that Moss didn't still have talent, and if you don't cover him, he'll burn you. So I'd offer the gentle reminder that the book on Moss for game one was that he had been injured the entire preseason, that the Pats were considering releasing him as a mistake, and his injury was beginning to be viewed as an excuse to sit out camp. It was also assumed that he would not see much playing time in the first game.
So the issue isn't how well Moss played. The issure is that the Jets were stupid for failing to prepare for him.
This won't happen now that he's out of the hat. Team will prepare double teams for him. Which means that Brady won't go his way as often, which means that Moss will begin to pout, which means that Moss will begin to sprout alligator arms, which means that...
You heard it here first, Ano.
nyraider:
I think they'll retain Walter. We only have McCown and Culpepper for a year each as they stand now. Since we have Walter for another couple of years, there's no hurry to decide with him, and we'll be looking for some trade value. I think the competition now is between McCown and Culpepper to determine who stays while Russell prepares next season.
I don't think McCown has won the starting job for the year, in fact Kiffin says he hasn't. Both will continue to audition for the starting spot in 2008.
I'd also remind you that we have an over abondance of DBs on the team. So my bet is that we keep four QBs, Russell will be at the games in street clothes, and we release Johnson.
From what I've read this morning about the deal agreed to by Russell, it appears to be virtually the same deal that the Raiders reportedly offered originally.
We're not likely to get confirmation of this. The Raiders don't comment, and Metz and company will spin it their way. And they have a lot of spinning to do, to explain why it is that their client was the longest NFL hold out ever for someone who was offered a contract for only one professional sport.
