One Happy Postgame Take
I’m sort of speechless at the moment. After all, I haven’t had a lot of practice writing post-victory takes lately.
I guess we can throw the ball deep. I guess we can run the ball with both force and finesse. I guess we can avoid giving up the big play at the wrong moment. This is the most balanced game I’ve seen the Raiders play in at least two years.
Justin Fargas was a beast, as was Jerry Porter. Yes, Jerry Porter rose from the dead, and proved to be tough as nails. Last time I saw him play like this, it was in
It was nice to see the playbook opened up, too. Instead of saying we can’t do things, we just did them. Kudos to Kiffin for keeping locker room mutiny at bay and fielding a focused team amid the hostile environs of Arrowhead. This, indeed, bodes well for the future. By fighting instead of folding, especially this late in the season, the Raiders demonstrated that there’s finally a captain on the ship.
Let’s not forget that the Raiders taunted the football gods earlier this week, and the football gods nearly had the last laugh. By deactivating Michael Bush and retaining LaMont
And who is Kolby Smith? Before today, he was a fifth-round rookie who backed up Bush at
The football gods were clearly smiling on Kolby Smith, no doubt licking their chops with the sweet taste of irony regarding his ties to Bush—but then the Autumn Wind blew the smiles off their faces. For once, finally, the ball bounced in favor of the Raiders.
The best bounce of all came courtesy of Herm Edwards, who has never been regarded as a genius of clock management or strategy. With the opportunity to tie the game late with a 40-yard field goal, he went for it on fourth down, only to watch Smith get smacked for a loss.
The day got even better when the Broncos kept kicking to Devin Hester—and Devin Hester kept returning the kicks for touchdowns. When they finally stopped kicking to Hester, they kicked the ball right into an oncoming defender. The Broncos lost to the Bears in overtime, setting the perfect stage for next Sunday’s game.
If I recall correctly, we were tied for the longest divisional drought since the AFL-NFL merger, and a loss today would have made dubious history. But we finally got the

Where do you start???
Kiffen unleashes the offense actually giving them and opportunity to determine the outcome and they respond my making big time plays.
Run defense gets raped for the entire game then stones the Chiefs on 4th and 1 in the final quarter with the game on the line.
The Raider offense has the audacity to run the clock out with three consecutive first downs on the final drive and we see our Raiders in victory formation, counting down the final seconds.
For a minute there I thought the two teams had switched uniforms!
EIGHT AND EIGHT BABY!
Well, unfortunately we are starting the most brutal part of the schedule... but hopefully this will give the offense some well needed confidence so we can remain competitive in every game.
The o-line deserves a game ball... KC really wasn't that bad against the run this season.
Beating Denver and KC back to back would make this season much less disastrous, and give Kiffin some more clout with "two more rings" Al.
Now if we can only find a DC that isn't too scared to call anything besides a base defense 95% of the time. Watching Philly tonight is HOW YOU ATTACK AN OFFENSE... pay attention SOB.
If you take away the 61 yards rushing on their first TD drive, we held them under 100 yards the rest of the day. It's not like our run D is totally bad, they're just bad in streaks. We’re one bad streak (avoidance) away from having a solid run D game.
Morrison is solid in run D, making the 4th down stop and occasionally making tackles behind the line, but needs to be given more opportunity to play aggressively against the run.
Porter can be as streaky as our run D, and needs to put another solid game on the field, preferably against the Donkeys this week.
Check out Zach Miller’s block that sprung Fargas to end the game (NFL.com). It’s no surprise that we had more success running the ball to the right side. Three names come to mind (from the left side): Sims, Gallery... and the Chefs top DL player, Jared Allen. Although, I give our entire O-line credit for not having their names called by officials yesterday (save an early holding call on McNasty). That in itself was huge!
Will this be the impetus for more good things to come?!!

Long lost friend returns

Sparking hope again
warren sapp seemed surprised that the chiefs did not go for a field goal. herm may have given us the game with that call, but his kicker did miss a 30 yarder pretty badly. so by all rights, it should have been a game winning field goal attempt. but because he had missed from 30, herm got itchy with a 41 yard game tying field goal attempt, and decided to go for it.
i was surprised he didn't go "play-action-pass" there. he could have had a touchdown with that call. the raiders couldn't stop smith all day, until it mattered most. and look what they did to do it, man coverage on the corners, and a read-the-gap zone for the line and safeties; which gave morrison and howard. i hope ryan utilizes that scheme more, starting next week.
i'll take this "w" regardless if you feel like "herm gave it to us". i personally feel the raiders defense was going to give it away again, and they called the right scheme at the right time, regardless of what smith had done all day; we stopped him when it mattered. a "w" is a "w."
I was there and it was awesome! This game is always my regular season superbowl and for once I have a reason to celebrate. I saw a lot of silver & black in the stands along with a lot of empty seats (suck on that Peterson!). I haven't had the chance to set my eyes on the Raiders since I left CA almost three years ago, so it was a treat to see the silver & black on the field in person. O line played well and the Offense in general had very few miscues. Porter even stood in and took a couple of hard shots. I thought the D was going to give it up in the fourth but they stood strong and stopped the Chefs on the fourth and one. My favorite moment of the game was after the two minute when Fargus ran 21 yards on the third and 11 to seal the game. Chef fan, in unison, got up and started filing out of the stadium. What a beautiful site! Go home bandwagon Chef fan!
What's the posibilities with 5 games left....we are one game behind KC and 2 games behind the Donko's....so second place is still a posibility....but we can't catch SD who have a 3 game lead so no play-off posibility even if we have turned the corner and play well the rest of the year...but I would settle for being #2 in the AFCW after the last few seasons of looooooooosing.....so here is to hoping we play out the rest of the season with more victories than losses....and the dream finish would be 8-8 with lots of hope for next year....

great win. Nice to see the handcuffs come off. Anybody miss Stu?
NY with you on Miller.
He had one play where he was run over on a block. Other than that he really blocked well. My guess is he will learn from the fumble. Plus he's a rookie.
I liked McQuistan's game. Again a break on the penalty. It's what, his third game? He got after people.
Fargas is slippery. Rewatching the game he does not need the line to hold blocks long, more like screens and he gets through.
Looking around the league I could pull my hair out. 12 teams have 5 or 6 wins and are still talking playoffs. It's crazy.
If they would have won the games we all expected them to win....
Hey Panty!
This next game is big. Denver is the only remaining opponent who is considered "beatable". Unless you count the Chargers, who are looking much better and will be playoff hungry. Barring any miracles this is our one chance to at least reach 4 wins.
I know it's wrong to draft a DE but if I had Chris Long on my board I'd just take him. I'm secretly hoping he gets picked before us so we can do the right thing and draft some offense. Every win we get will help my cause. Man, getting Chris Long would really be great though.
Psycho
Game ball - Justin Fargas. In case you guys don't know, we have not had a running back gain 100 yards in KC since 1978! That includes Van Eagan, Allen, Jackson, Kaufman, Wheatley, Jordan... Nobody but Fargas, baby, since 1978.
Re-evaluate whether you think Fargas can be the starter. But starter or not, we should hang on to Fargas like the Holy Grail. At the very least he is the Raider version of Paul Hofer and an inspiration to this team.
Add O-line, and especially Sims. Com'on guys, give credit where credit is due. Not one penalty flag thrown at Sims, and he kept Allen missing in action.
And one more thing, time. In the 4th quarter Culpepper STOOD, in the pocket. Read that again, he "STOOD in the pocket." In other words, he didn't have to run away from a colapsing pocket.
A Herm Edwards team always has a stout run defense. The KC has been good against the run this year. But the o-line gave Fargas creases, and protected Culpepper's backside.
FS Sean Taylor was shot in a home invasion and could die. Crazy stuff.
Psycho
Raider Nate 75 - Kiffin admitted they employed their goal-line defense on 4th down plays (which didn’t work on the 1st one, but worked when it counted). And I agree that a play-action pass could have been trouble for us.
Psycho - Chris Long is the right pick for us. With our new blocking scheme, we don’t need to draft lineman early... Denver never seems to. And while we need a WR (an obvious early pick), Long is our guy! It’s his destiny to become a Raider.
NY, with our run D as bad as it is, it won't take much effort for you to convince me that Long is the right pick.
If we can get our offensive "play makers" to consistantly put together games like Sunday maybe we don't need to address RB or WR in round #1 and Long will make more sense. Lots of good OT's in this draft so maybe one will slip to round #2. It really does seem like it is our destiny to get Long.

How many coaches has Fargas played for before Kiffin?
Blanda-
Interesting info on the 100 yd game in kc. I thought Howie Willaims had a good game in kc back in the day?
Thanks for the link but I refuse to read kawaski or his mother's columns.
Who was that masked man who hurdled the line on the Chef field goal that sailed wide left.
That had to be distracting to see someone that high in the air while trying to make a kick.
After a rough start Jano is up to almost 80% for the year including 5of 9 from 50 plus.
Fargas is on pace for 1000 plus yards. Throw in receiving and he is almost there now.
Our four game closing run is a killer, GB, Indy, Jacksonville and the Turneretts. Maybe we can pull and upset in one there.
As for Chris Long. There are three DL's out there that would be solid. Since I live in SEC/ACC country it is my point of reference. Long, Glenn Dorsey and Wallace Gilberry. Long and Dorsey are All Americans. Gilberry plays DE on a 3-4 but moves inside when they use a 4 down formation.
Gilberry is a hard worker with good technique and plays the run and pass equally well. He might fall to the second round and if he does he won't last long. Gilberry and Long are a little light to play tackle, but Dorsey is ready to go on the inside if his knee is back to 100%.
On the OL, I would go free agency if there are some decent tackles available and try and get one of the three above.
By the way,McQuistan had a couple of false starts, but seemed to block better than Green was doing. He got blown up on one of the sacks, but his run blocking was fairly good.
H
Seems to me, Fargas got here in Callahan's second season. So he's played for Callahan (who just got fired in Nebraska), Turner and Shell before Kiffin. Kiffin was one of his college coaches.
You have got to love Fargas. "Never quit" tatooed on his shoulder, nick-named "Crash Test Dummy," and those legs keep churning until the whistle blows. The players around him call him an inspiration. Huggy Bear, Jr. is a Raider!
Lots of positives on Fargas. So far he has answered the question of can he handle the load. He shows no signs of slowing down, getting tired, or hurt etc.
He seemingly never fumbles.
If we have another guy like Bush prove to be a better option to start, Fargas has always remained quiet, hard-working, and has kept the "team first" attitude throughout his bench-warming days. A coach's dream. I'm really happy for him. And Kiff is The Man for giving him a legitamate shot.
Psycho
Chris Long is a little light for DT. But so was Howie. We used to switch Howie back and forth between DT and DE. The other side never would know where he was going to line up. And Howie had speed. I remember him chasing down Elway from behind.
H,
It was Clemons #58 who jumped over the line. The refs thought for a minute they should throw a flag, it was such a nice leap.

Blanda,
Plus Chris Long is a little bigger than daddy.

The 2007 draft. While there has been much hand wringing around here, about the Raiders cutting their 3rd Round pick, potentially we've put 5 starters on the field for 2008. JRuss, Bush, Richardson, O'Neil, and Miller. Five starters out of any draft is a gold mine.
I agree, Fargas looks and plays like he could be from our 1970s teams. It's not always about speed or even sheer talent; willpower and attitude go a long way toward winning. The guy plays Raider football.
Finally, we've got someone on our offense whose jersey I might buy for my kid (of course, only Jordan jerseys are available at the moment).
Also, let it be said that Kiffin listened, this week, to our very own H! H was saying something the last two weeks about, "I wish they'd play to win, instead of playing not to lose!" Well, H, Kiffin read your words and delivered. In his press conference, he acknowledged playing not to lose in the past, and determined that he'd play to win against KC.
Congratulations, my Silver and Black brother!
As good as Fargas can be, however, I'm still very excited about Bush adding dimension to our running game. That could be quite a tandem, with Bush adding a quality of elusiveness to the more punishing style of Fargas.

H - "McQuistan had a couple of false starts..."
I must have missed those. I thought he was just called for a hold. Total recall is difficult at my advancing years. I envy you guys that are able to record the games.
Fargas for president!
RT~
With Bush weighing in at 245 lbs., isn't Bush a bit of a bruiser as well? I'd always thought HuggyJR was a head-on slasher-type (???- not sure I can define it either! )
I'm not too familiar with Bush -
I know that he doesn't have "Bo" speed - but I heard that he'd have gone "Top 10" in last year's draft had he not been injured...
Yeah, Bush is a bruiser, but I think he has more moves than Fargas. He's 6'2" as well, so it's not like he's a fire hydrant. I love Fargas's game, but when our passing offense struggles and the box gets stacked, I'm not convinced he has the moves to make them pay, at least consistently.
What I love about Fargas' running style is his quickness. He heads toward the line and you see nothing there. You're sure that he'll get hit at the line and stopped for a minimal gain. Then the smallest of creases can open up and he's already through it. No chance of it being closed before he gets there. Beyond the line he refuses to go down, he has to be dragged down. But even when being dragged down, his legs are pumping, getting every extra inch.
Every Raider player should just touch him, hoping that some of that heart will rub off.
You're right. Prior to Victory Lane yesterday (!!), the only thing our opponents needed to do to stop us was stack eight in the box. Tough to block all of them bodies.
I need to see some Bush (clips!) to see if he was "All That" in college. And then pray like the damned that it translates well to the NFL.
BTW... Which team was it recently that went with a "Linebacker Dime Package?" Da Bears? or Titans? THAT was rather embarrassing - "Na-na n'na na - dare you to throw..."

Sean Taylor update. After being shot in a home invasion, he is still alive but in critical condition. He's now slipped into a coma after surgery.
Psycho
Psycho, I don't know squat about medicine or Taylor's condition, but I do know that sometimes, in severe trauma, a coma is induced to aid recovery. Just saying that the coma might not be a bad sign. Hoping for the best.
To me, a coma is the bodies way of repairing itself so yeah you're probably right. Let's just hope he wakes up.

FYI
He apparently got shot in the leg, foiling an attempted robbery.
"The 24-year-old [Taylor] was in the intensive care unit at Jackson Memorial Hospital after several hours of surgery. Taylor lost a 'significant' amount of blood because the bullet damaged his femoral artery," said family friend Richard Sharpstein, his former lawyer.
Doctors are worried the blood loss might affect blood flow to the brain.
A couple of thoughts. When we've turned around in the past, both up and down, it has happened against the KC Chefs. It was the two losses in '95 that set the tone for Mike White. It was the heartbreaking loss to the Chefs in the final minute that derailed Joe Bugel; the 2nd season, come from behind finale that set the tone for the successful Gruden system and a 1 point loss in KC that set the pace for its demise under Callahan. No life for Turner, no hope for Shell.
At KC Kiffin decided that it's time for the training wheels to come off of his system, and he put up a W. At his press conference, Kiffin said it will now be up to the players to win or lose under the full on Davis philosophy, ATTACK, ATTACK, ATTACK!
And this comes in front of the most difficult part of the 2007 schedule. No hope for the playoffs, but I'd like to if there's a consistent difference.
To show progress late in the season leaves hope for all of us that the Raiders are on the right track... long-term.
None of us really expected a playoff opportunity this year, but we all expected progress. It's not too late.
What gets me amped up is that Kiff seems to have realized that to beat the chefs is important. The past few years it feels like the coaching and the team all kinda treated these games like any other...but they're not! I've hated them @#$%$ &%@# #&*$% $##'s since I was just a little kid...BlandaRocked I think you said last year sometime that you could remember a time when you could actually lose your job for having just one lousy game against KC!!!! We all know it hasn't felt like that for quite some time.

"In case you guys don't know, we have not had a running back gain 100 yards in KC since 1978!" (Blandarocked)
It feels like that long since we've held a KC RB to less than 100 yards in KC. Of course, that trend remains in tact.
I'm still in the best mood ever after that win. And Psycho, I'm with you on bringing Chris Long home to the Nation (I posted so a few days back). But we still have WR needs as well (Porter needs to play like that for the rest of the season for me to think he is a long term answer). Any thoughts on WRs in the draft?
If I remember right when I was growing up, Howeie wouldn't let Chris come to the games in LA because he felt the enviroment was too rough. Thank g*d my dad let me go, cause I'm still a die hard Raider fan. I'll never forget him pointing out number 75 and telling me to keep my binoculors on him. A Howie Long jersey is my preferred game wearing apparel.
And thanks to RT, found the blog a few weeks back, and it makes it much easier to be a fan of the Nation in Raiderfan-less St. Louis.
Roger
Welcome aboard, Roger! Perhaps we can give you the handle Jolly Roger, in honor of the eye patch? I appreciate you and all who give their takes, your comments, dialogue and analysis keep me informed and inspired, and I know I'm not alone.
My fantasy for the Denver game.
Jano steps on to the field with just enough time to kick a 50+ yarder. As he steps in to the kick, Shanarat ices him with a time-out. But the kick hits the right upright and bounces harmlessly to the field. After the time out, Jano hits it. Perfect.
Bama7
My fantasy for the Denver game: We're up comfortably with about a minute to go and the Broncos expect us to kneel on it to end the game, but instead we throw deep and get a TD, purposely running up the score so that it boils under Shanny's grill the entire offseason. Then, we're the talk of the NFL in that everyone says it was uncool to do that. People start hating us again because we win and win nasty.
Maybe the new Raiders will enter the playoffs, finally??? Just win, Baby!
I posted at work but it did not come through.
I thought Huff played well and gets better each game. Also Eugene fared well considering it's his first start. I don't want to offend all the stu fans. (insert cricket sounds)

Another good point on the fresh blood. Note: O'Neal blocked well all game.
The turn around was the OT game on News Years Day!
May the force be with us again!

What's this weeks game plan?
Also check out Calico Jack's blog for more goosd stuff.
I just flipped past the stealers-fins game and hanging from the second level in one endzone is a huge sign that reads steeler nation. How pathetic.
Psycho,
Thanks for clearing up who leaped over the line. Last night I watched the second half again and zoomed in on the play and it did appear to be 58. Clemmons has come out of nowhere to be an impact player. I hope he's not a one year wonder and can stabilize the final LB spot.
Blanda,
Thanks for the complement. And, yes they did play to win. The evidence was the first down pass to Curry when we were trying to run out the clock. Caught the defense totally flat footed with zero rush and time to throw. They also ran outside with success and hit the tight end with a couple of quick ones.
I feel somewhat exonerated about my complaint. I was listening to Snake Stabler on the internet with his breakdown of Alabama's loss to Auburn. Auburn took D J Hall away and blitzed heavily. He said one of the best ways to slow down the rush in that case and open up the run some more is to go to the tight end. Give them someone else to think about. Alabama lost because the offense didn't adjust where the defense did and kept them in the game.
My point, Kiffin and Ryan for the first time this season made adjustments in game. At least adjustments that worked.
The pressure was there and Croyle was throwing under duress most of the day.
As for Fargas, I hope he keeps the same attitude. He reminds me somewhat of Mark van Egan with speed. He's coming at you with everything he's got.
H
Bama7
Sorry H, but Croyle is always throwing under duress....can't make reads and has zero mobility. An NFL team should never lose to a QB/RB duo of Brodie Croyle & Kolby Smith. KC's the 29th ranked offense in the league, and the game was basically a coin toss. At least we're not the worst team in the league. And I agree with NY Raider that I'll save applause for Porter until he backs up a good game with two or three more. Porter is always good for one game a year where people start believing his hype again. The last thing we need is for Big al to gather renewed faith in his scholarship players. Truly the worst thing that can happen to us at this point. That's what scare sme about Fargas. The guy seems totally different than a year or two ago. And Jano's playing well too... just when we were probably close to getting rid of him. Let's see how they all do on Sunday.
Bama,
Croyle was sacked three times. Now if he has zero mobility he should have been sacked six to eight times. He got away from Burgess at least three times, and was constantly getting out of the pocket because of pressure.
I'm simply pointing out we were getting pressure on the QB for a change, which is a good thing.
Now if we get rid of Jano who do we replace him with, Dave Rayner?
Jano currently leads the league in touchbacks with 19 and with one more field goal he will go over 80%and is 5 of 9 from over fifty yards. 4 of his 5 misses were from over fifty, one of which was over 60 and that one hit the upright and wasn't short.
So, I guess you are still in favor of dumping two of the players who have been coming through for the team the last few games. Who are their replacements?
I get the feeling you only want pro bowl players at each position.
I guess we should dump Shane Lechler too, after all he did punt one into the end zone when he was trying to down it inside the 10. And, least we forget, he had that one that bounced backwards for 10 yards.
We have players that need to be replaced on this team. Right now Fargas and Jano ain't on the list. If they fall on their faces next season, so beit. For now they have earned their roster spots.
I guess I just refuse to go to the half empty syndrome. Especially about a football team. Sunday was fun and we beat the Chefs that's what I'm going to remember most.
H
H,
It's easy to look at Clemons #58 and think he's a LB, since he was converted from LB. But we've only used him as a DE. I've been watching the guy ever since we passed on Q.Moses for him and he has not disappointed at all. He currently leads the Raiders in sacks with 6. He's like the defensive equivalent of Fargas.
Psycho
Bama7
H... you're just still pissed about Auburn sacking Croyle ten times in 2005. Please tell me Wesley Britt was not the LT in that game, cuz he is currently #2 on the Patties depth chart at LT. Please tell me Britt was gone then.
I'm a winner baby. This team's gotta show aa whole hell of lot more than 1 win before I get giddy about anything. And yes, I'd dump Jano just to make a statement. the statement: You have not earned your money over the years... you have not lived up to 1st round expectations. You were expected to be the best kicker in the nfl year in and year out and you have not done that. Don't have a good game when we're 3-8 and expect me to get excited.
I have no problem at all with Lechler.
Bama7
Good points, Psycho.
And by the way, watched the game last night and watched Q Moses log his first sack of the year when he dumped Rothelesburger for a three yard loss. Moses now has 1 sack in two games played.
Stats are for losers so it's only fitting that I throw out a few:
1) Robert Thomas has 43 tackles in only 7 starts, 5th place on the Raiders already.
2) Jano has missed only one FG of less than 50 yards all year, and it was a long one from dirt I believe.
3) We get sacked an average of 1.8 times per game, as opposed to 4.5 times per game last year. And we have more wins.
4) We're still 4th in passing D, and 5th in rushing O.
5) Amazingly, there are 3 teams with more penalties.
6) We're 5th best in Time of Pos.
Psycho
my thoughts and prayers for the family of sean taylor. WOW, how tragic!
H - the thing about janikowski is you never know which janikowski is gonna show up. yeah he's on a roll at the moment, but still - he cost us at least 2 games at the beginning of the year. he's a 1st round pick. he should be automatic every time he goes out there. i for one don't give a damn about touchbacks. those don't score points. for a kicker, accuracy is my #1 priority. i hate having to close my eyes when he lines up for a kick!
Scorpio:
Apparently you've forgotten about the Raiders before Jano. Teams routinely started their drives at the 35, 40, or even mid field. So, yeah, touchbacks are important to me. And Jano did not lose us two games. He didn't lose us any this year. He's missed one kick this year that an NFL kicker should make. Otherwise he's been stellar. But I grant you, from year to year he's been inconsistent. But I think that inconsistency, primarily, has been caused by coaching. Kiffin is the first coach he's experienced who just says, "go out and kick the hell out of it."
Psycho:
1) Kiffin has already stated that Thomas has won that job. Even though Williams his healthy again, Thomas has been too good to sit down.
2) See my comment to Scorpio above.
3) I think the sacks are down because both QBs are an upgrade in mobility from last year. Walter is a statue, McCown is more mobile than Brooks, and Culpepper is almost as mobile as Brooks.
4) Kiffin has been careful to establish these things as "things we do well and can always count on." It is notable that we weren't good at either last season. Last year our running D was our strength (because teams hardly ever saw the need to pass), and on offense, we weren't good at anything.
5) I'm not prepared for the world to end. The RAIDERS not 32nd in penalties? Surely the first sign of the apocalypse.
6) I have a feeling, since Kiffin has rediscovered the passing game, that might even out.
blanda, you're just trying to justify al's pick.
sure he "didn't lose us games" but what i meant was he had a hand in those 2 or 3 early losses. by missing all those field goals early on, he left valuable points on the field. so he DID contribute to the losses.
I know, Scorpio. It's Al's fault. (sigh)
bama7
Also Blanda, I wouldn't think coaching changes would affect a Kicker. I just can'y buy that one, my friend.
Ah, but Kiffin's approach was to NOT change the kicker. He let him be, and it's working. Unlike previous coaches.
Psycho
"...i for one don't give a damn about touchbacks. those don't score points..."
- scorpio
No, but the touchbacks can deter points, and gravely affect field position.
Although it's difficult to justify having given up a first-round pick in 2000, we lost ALL EIGHT games in '99 by seven or fewer points, four of them by a field goal or less! That season Michael Husted went 20 out of 31 (64.5%), while Joe Nedney improved that to 5 of 7 for a whopping 71.4%! And I'm not really a "stat" guy....
OK, we missed out on Shaun Alexander. I just think it's time to come to grips with it and accept SeaBass - after all, he's OUR #1 Kicker... and doin' pretty well this season.
Bama7? Really? You can't buy that kickers are coached to do certain things? Have you ever actually been to a special teams practice session, even in high school? Not even kickers are born in a vacuum, Bama7.
Let's go over the coaching history of Jano.
1. Gruden asked Jano to always kick the ball away from the return man, and asked him to slow down his movement to the ball.
2. Callahan followed Gruden's thinking. As a result of both Gruden and Callahan, during those years, Jano rarely hit a touchback.
3. Turner pretty much left Jano alone, and nobody payed much attention to him. He wasn't the problem nor part of the solution.
4. Under Shell and Dasher, Jano was asked to squib the ball a lot, because Shell had no faith in return coverage. Dasher also messed with Jano's FG kicking motion in an attempt to find more accuracy in Jano's kicks.
Now, most of the fuss over Jano was reguarding his kick offs, but the two are linked in form so that, very often, a team will have a different specialist perform kick offs than FGs.
Kiffin has said that he has pretty much just left Jano alone. I believe part of the reason they decided to kick to Hester was because they didn't want to mess with Jano's motion in order to get him to kick the ball away from Hester.
I think we were all once complaining about Jano's inability to get the ball into the endzone on kickoffs at one time.
I believe it was said that was one of the reasons he was drafted. On a touchback, that is one less return with the possibility of the returner breaking one or a penalty on the coverage team. It's harder to score from the 20 than it is from the 40.
Actually Bama, I wasn't ticked about the 12 sacks. I was more ticked about the defensive letdown in the first quarter of that game. Alabama actually outplayed Auburn quarters 2-4, but were already down three touchdowns if memory serves.
As for coaching changes, Gruden was always tinkering with Jano's approach and wanting him to slow down. Others had him kicking high to give the coverage teams time to get down field, returners were getting the ball on the fly at the 15 and consistantly getting to the 30-35 yard line.
And, go ahead and dump Jano, make your statement, but who is out there that's better? You don't make a statement by bringing in someone worse. Especially when the guy is busting his ass for you.
Jano didn't cost two games. In the Mule game the second snap was bad and Lechler had to rush the setup.
As for being giddy over one win. Why not? Especially the Chefs at KC. We fell behind, but in the fourth quarter went 77 yards in 3 plays using Miller, Porter then Fargas. Then ran out the clock.
Plus, I finally saw some of the things I've been looking for since August.
Now, the Mules are opening as a 3 1/2 point favorite. In the last game it was McCowan/Jordan. Let's see how Culpepper/Fargas does.
Blandarocked,
Yeah, it's Al's fault so I guess we will have to dump Fargas and make a statement.

Yes, H it IS Al's fault:
A few 2006 nfl salaries:
Jano $1,100,000
Jamal Williams DT Chargers: $750,000
Lorenzo Neal FB Chargers: $810,000
do you get it?
and that's not even going into whatever jano's nauseating 1st rd signing bonus was.
So I think that's the point people like Blanda miss about Jano... fu*& touchbacks, and fu*& his ocassional FG... give me REAL football players for my money.
Wasteful.

H, Jano must be picked on because he's the only player we are absolutely certain that Al picked. And it's not even that Gruden didn't want him just as badly. It's just that Gruden thought he'd still be available in the 2nd round. And Gruden wouldn't have used the first pick on Alexander because we weren't looking for RBs that season. We were still going with "thunder and lighning" (Wheatley and Kaufman). When Kaufman retired the following season, we picked up Garner.
So in order to keep up the "Al Davis is the devil" meme, we have to place our foot squarely on Jano's neck, and brand him a failure forever no matter how well he's doing. We ignore that he's hit more FGs than anybody in Raider history. Blanda included.
Blandarocked,
Fargas is doing well now so he can't be Al's pick anymore. Especially if he is now a real football player.
H
H, and of course JRuss was Kiffin's pick, which is why he's not playing. Al's jealous and won't allow that to happen. And especially Sims was Al's pick, even though he came in as an undrafted free agent.
No, you're wrong. Sims is a Gruden pick this week because he had a good game. But usually he's an Al pick.
Wait a minute, Kiffin and Fargas were at USC at the same time, so Fargas must be a Kiffin pick.
H
This just in. Jano's 19 touchbacks are not due to his training. It's a result of global warming. I guess we'll have to dump him for a more environmentally friendly kicker.
Don't believe me check this:
http://www.quantumcritics.com/football/global-warming-affects-nfl.html
H
H, I've been told tha global warming doesn't exist. All you have to do is listen to the oil company CEOs to know that. But if it did exist, Al Davis picked it.
well blanda - we DO agree on something. global warming doesn't exist but if it did, al caused it!
Al is probably older than the internal combustion engine, and maybe even coal burning. So you guys might be onto something. He may have contributed more to global warming than any other human. Also, immagine how much gas has come out of his own ass.
Psycho
Nice of Janikowski to finally get in shape, considering the million-dollar salary, first-round status and several months off each winter.
Just because I'm getting so f'ing sick and tired of hearing people gripe about Jano, here's the reality.
Of the Raiders top four kickers:
Blanda hit 65% in his career for the Raiders.
Chris Barr hit 65%.
Jeff Jaeger hit 75%.
Seabass hit 79%.
Of all of the extra points attempted, Seabass has missed two in his entire career, vastly eclipsing the others.
None of the others produced anywhere near the number of touchbacks, and Jano is the biggest scorer of them all.
Now you can argue all day whether he was worth a 1st round pick, but he is the best kicker the Raiders have had in their history - bar none.
Now I can understand folks getting a wee bit cranky with all the losing over the last several years. But it ain't Jano's fault, and don't rewrite history.
Too bad I didn't send him a copy of the Atkins Diet for Christmas four years ago, he'd probably be 88 percent.
When some one says "special teams is 1/3 the game" most will nod in agreement. It is actually more important as it determines field position more than any other aspect of the game.
The kicking team actually has the ability to set that field position with good kickers.
Touchbacks are enormous.
There is also a direct correllation between scoring and the yard line you start your drive on.
If I remember correctly two years ago? Jano was headed to the pro bowl but missed a couple vs tennessee I think and that ended that.
Gruden said he put on an "orbital display" at the combine. That and his college career were pretty compelling at the time.
Should he have been a first rounder?
It's too late now but I'll let you guys fight about it.
memdf:
The only way Jano can be considered average by this crowd is if he's perfect. And if he was perfect, as Al Davis' 1st round pick, having a tendency for being over weight would be enough to send him back to Poland.
Take, name one kicker in history with more than five years in the league with an 88% average. Or is 88% what it takes to justify a first round pick? Well that, my friend, is a done deal. No matter how long or how well Jano is trashed, it doesn't get us that pick back.
Well... I don't know... Maybe if we all hold our breath 'til we turn blue.
It was just a joke!
I'm not a Janikowski basher, but if we want to do some detective work on why some folks are down on him, we should probably start with this:
"Janikowski hadn't paid off much for the Raiders over the last two seasons. After signing a five-year extension worth a reported $10.5 million following the 2004 season, Janikowski made just 38 of 55 field-goal attempts and had the lowest success rate among all NFL kickers from 2005-06."
By his own admission, he'd gotten too fat (up to 280 pounds), even though he had enough money to hire his own 24-hour chef, personal trainer and masseuse.
So while I'm not a basher, I can understand the ill feelings for a guy who made himself a sort of poster child for the 2005-2006 seasons.
I'm just glad he's turning it back around.
Bama7
Blanda/H- Al's not even responsible for our awful record since Gruden left, huh? I know... go ahead and send your next post that tells us all how we are really 70-5 over the last 5 seasons... you know, really enjoy your delusions.
H- I can understand why you like Al's moves.. hiring ex players, clinging to tradition etc etc. It's the same problem you boys have down at Bama... Perkins, Stallings (I now he was A&M, but he played with BEAR) Dubose, Shula... blah blah blah. There's a reason y'all lost to Louisiana Monroe and it's the same damn problem Oakland had/has... Biletnekoff, Shell, W Brown, scouts that are ex players, old schemes... blah blah blah.
Here's hoping Kiffen and others take the reigns completely.
Back to you Blanda... jano is been painfully average and selecting him in the first round should be enough to get any executive fired... except the might Al. But according to you Blanda, our ROI is excellent here, with our 79%-on first round draft pick. We did great! A great use of the salary cap! And boy does the rest of the league fear Jano... and boy I bet every other team in the nfl is kicking themsleves that they didn't pay Jano a 1st rd signing bonus.
If I was your boss Blanda, I'd take your latest data (2:08 pm) and choose 65% Bahr and use the savings on cutting Jano to bring in Shawn Philips LB for the Dolts who made $425,000 last year. Thanks for the stats.
blanda....I love you man.
You pretty much saved me multiple postes.
Jano is as close to a football player as you're going to get out of a kicker (except for Blanda of course).
I can only remember him missing one tackle when he was the last person to beat (anyone know how many TD's have been scored against him?). And even though he was a bit heavy, he always had pretty good husstle.
If you had to pick one kicker to hit by, it wouldn't be Jano.
If Bama and H can russtle up a some Jim's (Thorps, Ottos, Browns, the're all good), maybe we can field a roster.
It would be funny as hell if we actually won the West this year :-)
Bama7
And Blanda, your argument that Al wouldn't draft a position he didn't need (2000 Alexander, RB) makes little sense when you consider how many DB's he's drafted or brought in as FA over the years. Al's love of the CB is borderline psychotic.
Bama7
http://www.nfl.com/players/search?category=position&filter=kicker&playerType=current&conference=ALL
Looking at FG %'s here... of 35 kickers listed with a FG %, 24 of them have a higher FG made % than our boy Jano? Is that right? Surely that can't be right. Blanda, please tell me why he is really better than what shows here. Save someone else a post on defending Jano.
And to anon 3:01 (actiually Blanda posting anonymously) that thinks jano is a great "cover" player on returns. can jano's fatass actually catch anyone or get in position to hit someone? You have to be kidding me. I she known for nailing runners and making stops. Huh?
Bama7, show me your evidence that Al personnally selected the DBs. In case you've forgotten (and you likely have because you can't remember anything beyond a game or two ago) I don't buy into your theory that Al personally makes every pick. And don't dig up articles by Kawakami and Gay to show me how wrong I am. I don't consider that those two have an entire brain between them.
That Al insists on some picks, I don't doubt. But so does every other owner who plays an active part in their organization. He does, after all, write the checks.
In case you didn't notice, those DBs were selected in Gruden/Callahan years. When those coaches were gone, we only selected DBs as they were needed. Or did you forget already that we NEEDED Michael Huff? Gibson (drafted when Gruden was coach) was peachy for you? Of course Davis said he preferred Leinart. You might buy that now that Huff is coming along, and Leinart tended toward bust this season. But that's just a little written recent history that should be forgotten, because it interferes with trashing Davis.
Bama7, you have a singular lack of memory for history (recent and otherwise), and your reason and logic seriously suffer the consequences. Here's a clue. Examine history with the use of reason and logic, don't rewrite history so that it will fit your fantasies.
