Just What, Baby?

After  four seasons and nearly 500 posts since launching Raider Take, I am taking a step back. The reasons are both personal and organizational.

On the personal front, life circumstances have put an increasing squeeze on my time (for all the right reasons). I need to choose my hobbies carefully.

On the organizational front, I’ve regretfully become convinced that winning is no longer the top priority for the Oakland Raiders. The Raiders have become like a restaurant that is focused on the flatware, not the food. Their eye is off the ball, and ultimately off the prize.

I have no doubt that the Oakland Raiders organization has convinced itself that winning is still its top priority. But that doesn’t make it true. The evidence strongly suggests that stubbornness and stagnancy are the real bottom line Oakland today.

Until winning returns as the top priority in Oakland, it doesn’t make a lot of sense for me to spend precious time blogging about the Raiders.

Trust me, I know that most folks don’t give a rat’s a** if I take a hike. But Raider Take has become a community, and it would be wrong to walk out on friends without an explanation. I’m not shutting the site down, but the frequency of posts will be scaled back significantly, and that will no doubt change the nature of this place.

Don’t think this is all about wins and losses. Losing is just a symptom. You can lose a lot of games with winning as your top priority (see the 2008 Dolphins). I’m just not convinced that this is the case in Oakland anymore.

Some examples:

The organization knew that Lane Kiffin was a lame duck at the end of the 2007 season. Instead of acting swiftly and decisively, and instead of installing a proven new coaching regime that could put us firmly back on the winning track, the organization allowed the lame duck to wobble into to the season with a guillotine hovering above his neck. Was it because of the money? Was it a personal grudge? Was it just bad judgment? I’m not sure. But I am sure that it wasn’t about winning. A team with winning as its top priority doesn’t allow this to happen.

Randy Moss literally and repeatedly quit before our eyes, yet Mr. Davis sill rues the day he lost Randy Moss. A player who should make his blood boil instead inspires sentimentality. If winning were the priority, why so many tears over this loser? Frankly, it’s insulting to the fans who paid hard money to watch that clown jog around the field. Jack Tatum would have ripped his head off. Yet today, Moss is nothing but a star upstairs in Alameda.

Rob Ryan’s units have chronically underperformed during his tenure in Oakland, yet he has survived three head coaches. At this point, Rob Ryan could survive a nuclear winter in Alameda. Yet not only hasn’t he been fired, he hasn’t been promoted, either, despite three opportunities. What does that tell you?

I’ve always admired the loyalty of the Raiders organization. But today that loyalty has mutated into something bizarre and counterproductive. It’s no longer just about giving a helping hand to an old Raider in need or keeping a permanent seat for Jim Otto in the skybox. It’s about allowing chronic underperformers to occupy roster spots to the detriment of progress (and thus winning). This is an established fact.

When Kiffin was a dead man walking earlier this season, even the players were wondering aloud what was going on. It was total informational chaos, and it was an admitted distraction in the locker room. Yet the only real effort to correct the record had nothing to do with the game of football, but with a disagreement about some ESPN article being distributed to the local media. The fact that this spat was conducted so unprofessionally only underscored the tragedy and the comedy of the situation.

Organizations focused on winning do not act this way. The priorities have become jumbled in Oakland. Yes, the coaches and the players want to win on Sunday. The owner wants to win. They all want to win. Yet a culture of losing is allowed to persist, and insular thinking, not winning, is the ruling priority.

Trust me, I am not bitching and moaning here, I’m just citing some clear examples why I’ve come to the conclusion that winning is no longer the top priority in Oakland. I could give many other examples, but I won’t, because you’re all familiar with them by now.

I didn’t coin the term “Just Win, Baby.” But, as a Raiders fan, I innately understand it. It’s not about winning this game or that game, because you can’t win them all in the NFL. It’s about doing what it takes to win, at all times. In competitive football, there can be no other priority. You can lose games, but your priorities cannot waver. If they do, you are doomed, and the notion of competitive football ceases to have meaning.

If a culture of losing begins to infest the building, it must be exterminated, not encouraged.

Don’t call me a bandwagon fan. I’m still a hardcore Raiders fan. I’ve blogged faithfully, year after year, during the organization’s most dismal era. As of today, I’m no different than any other hardcore Raiders fan who doesn’t regularly blog about the team.

I am not in a rage about the state of the Raiders. I will be at the game on Sunday, and will have fun as always. I still respect Al Davis, and I still love the Oakland Raiders. I am confident that the ship will be righted, and that winning will return as the top destination, hopefully as early as this coming offseason. Whenever it happens, it will be the result of radical change, the kind of change you can see and taste. There will be nothing vague about it.

Until then, like the Raiders, I’ll have different priorities.

I know how you feel. It's been very taxing.

Al did say in the press conference that it might take a little while longer before it turns around (i.e., probably not this year).

I feel sick.

You are a smart dude that can put a great "Take" on the Raides in a special way. Like I keep saying...I love Al Davis but...."we will win"..When Great change is made...The "No Dought" change it will take to clean house of the Stale Bread in Alameda.

Take,

In a way I knew this was coming. I do not blame you one bit for removing yourself from this blog.

As I watched the Giants - Steelers game on sunday I thought, "now that is a team (the Giants) that I can get behind." They don't play perfect football, but they do play gutsy, smart, physical FB. I can't say that about the Raiders. So for the first time in 30 + years I've thought about bagging the raiders for another team. Won't happen, but the thought is there.

I have travel plans to Oakland in December. Tickets to the Texan game have already been purchased. I will go and enjoy some family time with my mom and her husband. If the Raiders win, great, if not, that's ok, because in the end it really is just a game.

Thank you, Take, for providing this place to read about and discuss the Raiders. Hopefully some day, when the Raiders are playing competitive football, this site will spark back up.

Until then, GO Raiders!

As I indicated in my last post I too will be taking a step back.

I am normally in agreement with you but not this time:
"I am confident that the ship will be righted, and that winning will return as the top destination, hopefully as early as this coming offseason. Whenever it happens, it will be the result of radical change...

If you are "confident" this is going to happen then that makes one of us. Sorry, I hold out little hope and that's what makes this so bad.

Take care.

Hope you are back sooner than you think.

Take,

Completely agree and wonder what took ya so long. Been DVR'ing these games and enjoying time with my family, cycling, etc rather than watch the obvious!

Will watch parts in due time, but just can't stomach most of the current events out og Raider HQ.

Can't blame you one bit. Blogging about this team is like spending half of your day discussing Abbott and Costello reruns. It just doesn't warrant the time anymore. Will continue to watch and hope, but that's about it. Enough time wasted.
P.S.- Losing football is one thing. Non-competitive football is something completely different. We can still be competitive at home (at times) but as was evident from the 1st couple of plays Sun and the last road game against N.O., the road games are over before the openning kickoff. That my friends is intolerable.

Until winning returns as the top priority in Oakland, it doesn’t make a lot of sense for me to spend precious time blogging about the Raiders.

Tell me about it! Considering the sorry state of the two Bay Area teams within the last several years, my buddy and I usually talk something like .... 'OMG ... these two must be tossing too many soaps in their shower rooms nowdays. Gayders and Sixty-niners ... Bay Area football at its best!' There is not a whole lot of X's and O's talks between us any longer.

Rather shameful to say, but Raiders football talk has become more similar to soap opera talks over the years (considering how much the Alameda HQ has become the laughingstock of the league).

Take, as the others before me stated; we are in agreement with the state of our beloved Raiders. I will go one step further (as I've done for awhile), and that is the change has to start at the top head of the organization, Al Davis. I think it is coming soon with the Estate Tax changes coming. I believe the next President of our Great Country will address the "No Estate Tax" currently slated for 2010. It will be at a higher rate than it is now, but lower than the 48% in 2011; and Al may be forced to turn his estate over to his son earlier than expected (early next Spring or before the '09 season). So until then, we will ride the wave of change; signing yearbooks, wallowing in precious memories of yester yore, and looking with bright eyes into what the future holds.
Thanks for the great venting blog; and I will continue to venture around it, checking in every so often.

I have been waiting for your post game take. Truly though, I wasn't expecting this...I even got a google identity to post up in here!
I relate to your and just about every previous post above me...Let me say again, fire the GM.
I still want the legacy of Al Davis to be a great one, I still will never root against the Raiders. I still watch the games. I just don't buy the merch anymore. And when I go to California to visit family, Going to a Raiders game isn't the jewel of the trip...I just dont believe that The Raiders are moving in the right direction. On any given sunday, there are TWO teams. BOTH want to win. Nothing is handed to either team. Kiffin wasn't trending like Gruden at this early stage, but damn, he was making chicken salad outta chicken shit!

Take, its eerie seeing "The Raider Way"s page have a moratorium, and thinking bout that, I give you even more props for writing insightful takes when others have just straight up stopped like you are proposing...
I for one hope that at the most you scale it back, but I understand. When you write a blog, you write it to be heard, to participate, to defend from, and to agree with your fellow readers...take care take...

I appreciate everyone's support and understanding. I clearly wasn't reaching when I called this place a community, and when I called you my friends.

To be honest, I'm not sure what's next. I'm definitely taking a break, and it will take radical change in Oakland for me to muster much effort going forward.

I can take losing. That's all I've seen since I launched Raider Take. What I can't take is winning not being the top priority, and that's where we stand at this point, sadly enough.

Radical change ?

yes, how about hiring a Gm, who has athority to hire the best coach available,(bill cowher?),

and where that coach in turn, is allowed to hire his entire coaching staff, and to coach the team in any manner he sees fit.

or to shape the roster, through the draft and cuts, as he wants to without interference from a "love guru" owner.

when this happens, i will know the raiders are serious about winning again.
no more smoke and mirrors for me thank you.

until this time, you will be missed raidertake.
you have been great, and have done more to try and help the raiders than anyone in recent years.

again, i would like to thank you for being fair, and blogging the truth.

It's all good RT. Thank you for allowing us to enjoy the ride with you. Your dedication, thought provoking opinions, and interesting insight has been the hallmark of Raider Take.

Raider00, that was classic.

Charmaniac, thank you for that...and for the tailgates.

Gary, you're not done with me yet, but it's looking like an extended vacation right now.

In the 1980s, U.S. automakers were, in their eyes, committed to producing the best vehicles, just as they'd done in the past. But they instead produced junk. They lost sight of the big picture, and they ultimately lost their way. Insular thinking and refusing to adapt become the true priorities, and they paid for it. They didn't set out to produce crap, but the crap sure didn't produce itself, either. Good intentions and a nickel aren't worth a five-cent cup of jack squat, as a friend from Texans once told me.

This one's for you my friend. Though I do feel Spring is coming soon. Just not soon enough.

The Winter Cold

The winter cold killed a pirate
Frustration on the sea
With a lamenting song, he weeps, he longs
To recover from his injury

He hangs his head in defeat
He feels helpless as the cold waves crash
He's lost his sense of direction
And has snot-sickles on his mustache

He moans and begs for mercy
He reflects on his glory of old
He begins to shake, and quiver and quake
As the winter robs him of his gold.

The winter cold killed a Raider
A legacy ends in turmoil and shun
He's been knocked around, hung upside down
Disgraced, defeated, undone...

RT, your withdrawal, while sad, is understandable and well respected. I must say, your insights and perspectives over the last couple seasons have been a guiding light and will be sorely missed. Mainstream media just can’t be trusted to report the truth.

Anyway, perhaps with players like Russell and McFadden (and another top draft pick this year), the Raiders will eventually win despite themselves; however, I don’t expect the culture to change anytime soon.

Cheers! And be well.

P.S. As long as the site is up, I will continue to check back and post occasionally, and hope that others do the same. Thank you to everyone here!

Can't say I blame you, life has gotten busier for me too (in a good way) and it's hard to say and think the same things about this team over and over again. Over on raiderfans.net someone reported that Aaron Brooks showed up at the team hotel in Baltimore the night before the game and left with some Raiders after curfew to hit the town. If true that is even more evidence that this organization doesn't get it. Does anyone think that would happen on the Giants, Patriots, etc.?

Best of luck and I hope the Raiders make some big changes soon and start winning so you'll be inspired to come back and write more often...

Well, it's too bad that you will be taking a step back. Understandable, but regrettable. I am ever the optimist and believe things will improve. But, I keep saying the one thing we as fans need to quit doing is wasting breath and text on Al Davis. Everyone, Raider fan or not knows what the story is with Al.Personally I am sick to death of seeing eight billion posts on every Raider blog bitching about Al Davis. Bloggers thinking they are offering some "new insight" when they suggest getting rid of Al Davis will fix the Raiders. That they just have to enlighten the Nation that Al Davis is the problem in Oakland. Hey! Di d you know? Al Davis is ruining the Raiders. We have heard it a Trillion times! For 30+ years I've heard it. Everyone knows the deal with the owner of the Raiders. Why bother pointing out on a daily basis that Al needs to retire, step down, die, etc? IT IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN!! Not any time soon anyway. Al Davis isn't going anywhere and there is nothing you or I or anyone can do about it.Obviously Al won't live forever, but he isn't going to retire in th forseeable future.RaiderNate75's theory as regards Al's estate is interesting, and if there is any merit to it may be the best hope of Al stepping aside anytime in the near future.

There IS something I can do.....and that is refusing to support this franchise with my hard-earned money! With the economy in the sad state it is currently in, it makes no sense to put my money into a franchise that clearly does not have winning as its top priority. I'll never stop being a Raider fan, but I find it sad when I have to switch the channel in the middle of a Raider game in order to see an offense that's capable of moving the ball and sustaining drives. Patience? After 5 years of this crap, and now 4 coaches, how much more patience can a fan have? If this Sunday's game sells out, I will be VERY surprised!

well what can i say? personally i've scaled back from reading/posting raider take myself. during the off season, i got a few calls from my ticket rep asking if i wanted to renew. i held back and held back and finally said.....NO. good decision on my part. recently, i FINALLY bought that flat panel tv i've always wanted. couldn't wait to watch raider games on it. went to that disastrous opener, saw what was developing and i watched a half of 2 games on my new tv. what an absolute freakin mess.

as tom cruise said in top gun, "i'm holding on too tight". there comes a time when you've got to let go even for a while.

now's a good time to take care of a few things in life we need to take care of. take isn't going anywhere as i believe none of us are going anywhere. for myself, i'll still listen/watch/attend raider games drop in here every once in a while. and RT - i agree with you - i hope we don't get criticized for being bandwagoners just because we need to take care of priorities in our lives.

hopefully someone will drop in and fix this mess that we call the oakland raiders. and we all know who ISN'T gonna fix this team, who in fact has destroyed this team - al davis.

when this team comes back, we'll be right there.

hey I agree with most of your last blog "just what baby?" and I have to disagree with you on the backbone of your point that this organization doesn't want to really win...Al Davis first of all never liked spending money on players he was always a cheap ass... Look at the J.Russ hold out Davis didn't want to pay a kid 60 million dollars that never took a snap in the NFL but he ended up doing it anyway cause. He wanted to win! So he did what he could so we can start the new era with J.russ.:...I think with all the unusaul spending Al has done should he a indication that he wants to win!...the problem is the effort was misguided do to stubborness to not hiring a GM and let a real executative bring players in that deserve the money and not he a PAYCHECK player! But I feel ya on the priority thing there has to come a time where you accept reality that this thing is far from being where we want so it's hard to continue to keep the passion fire burning so with all that said good luck too you and hopefully when your ready you be back soon....God Bless!

Thank you, Mike. I agree that the Raiders want to win. I just believe that insular thinking and a refusal to adapt have become bigger priorities.

For example, we have a horrible track record when signing overrated free agents with known character issues, yet two of our biggest signings this year were Javon Walker and DeAngelo Hall.

Ostensibly, these guys were signed in an effort to win. But in reality, they are just emblematic of a larger priority, which is to gratify the insular thinking of a losing culture.

What kind of respect Raider Take displays for Mr. Davis when all Raider Take does in the article is to re-hash all the proper things that Mr. Davis chose NOT to do??

And undoubtedly Mr. Davis is responsible for all that's wrong with the Raiders' front office management [player selections, contracts, coach appointments, etc] and on the playing field [defines the offensive/defensive strategy for the coaches, retaining scholarship players, playing track stars with minimum football skill, etc.]

Al Davis advocates the following:

[1] Has hordes of former players as stoolies among other hand-picked employees that spend huge amounts of time spying & touting Al's philosophies.
[2] Defense that minimizes blitzing
[3] Speedy players with little/no football skills
[4] No disciplinarian coach
[5] Dismiss concept of "team chemistry"
[6] Sides with players over coaches
[7] Loyalty to retain on team long time Raider players now lacking football skills
[8] "Reload" but not "rebuild" team
[9] Signing & overpaying veteran free agents
[10] Seeking legal action against those he disagree with
[11] Drafting more [speedy] defensive backs
[12] Signing a FA from the most recent Super Bowl
[13] Man-to-Man coverage
[14] Seeking inexpensive coaches from all sources [B&B operator Tom Walsh]
[15] Order plays from the owner’s box
[16] Owner has sole authority to appoint assistant coaches
[17] Conduct intensive interviews with coach candidates but does not offer the position
[18] Offensive playbook features deep bombs
[19] Renege contract $$ balance of coaches he fired
[20] Maintain a small entourage of loyalists who agrees with everything the owner does
[21] Willing to trade a winning coach for more $$$ and high draft picks
[22] Blame others for draft selections later proven to be unworthy picks
[23] When in panic mode, sign more $$$$ free agents
[24] Want the team to maintain a "swagger" to intimidate the opposing team
[25] Retain a legal team to document suspected misconduct by coaches [excluding players]

Can all these qualities shape a successful organization and lead to a winning team?

Raider Take,

Well said. You summed up all the things I've been thinking and feeling about the Raiders, lately. I've been a fan of the Raiders for 40+ years, and I remember Stabler, Blanda, Madden, Upshaw, Shell, The Assassin, Ghost ... ah the old days! That was Raider football.

That's all long gone. All that's left are memories and shadows of the past.

I think that Al is demented, hiding in his bunker, and is determined that the team will die with him.

Year after year, same old crap. New coaches, new players, same old losing.

Now, no reputable, winning coach will ever work for Oakland again until the old pirate has sailed off for the great port in the sky.

I'll always be a Raiders fan. But I've flipped my Raiders tag upside down to protest the old demented one and his nonsensical, losing ways. And I'm not wasting anymore lunch hours reading about the Raiders online. Until the Really Big Change occurs.

Raider Take, I've enjoyed reading your blog, thanks for your time and insights.

I live in NC, so I guess I'll pretend to be a Panthers fan for a while.

I'm OUT.

The blog is right on point, but my friends, the losing will persist until Al Davis dies or a new coach is able to deal with him or limit his participation. No player will respect a coach whom the owner does not respect or let do his job.

Contrary to the blogger, however, I do not respect Al Davis anymore. Al is unprofesisonal, a bad human being and is only focused on what he wants and not what the team needs. His show re Kiffin was not about football or winning, it was about Al Davis and his world. I for one hope he is forced to pay every cent he owes to Kiffin and a bunch more in punitive damages. Screw Al Davis.

and if he put his stamp on the team this team would have gone upwards and into the palyoffs but no that did not happen b/c our organization is flawed.its all about Al and thats the sad part.
Kiffen was the answer but he needed time and I believe he was a very good coach b/c he had energy and yet at the same time he was aloof. All great coaches haveto be cold and calculating likeWalsh , bilichick ,Noll etc. Kiffen had those qualities and lo and behold he will bea great coach someday and the raider's had a chance but did not let him do his thing.

I hear you brother.......you should not hang your head in shame - its hard to support this organization. To love the team - that's easy, but to actually invest in these clowns, well that would grind down anyone.

This orgainzation is the laughing stock of the NFL.

The organization is broken. It starts at the top.

Its not going to get better on the field until it gets better at Harbor Bay Parkway.

And there is not a single sign that it is going to get better.

If you doubt it: check out the recent NFLPA survey that had the Raiders as the worst organization in football.

This was corroborated, when the Raiders were also dead last when the players were asked to indicate the best organizations in the National Football League.

No one wants to be associated with the Raiders - unless of course you are drafted against your will, are at the end of your career or got run out of town elsewhere and need a few million to get by.

Even Detroit was ranked 5 spots ahead of Oakland.

Detroit. Michigan. Haven’t been to the playoffs since 1999 Lions. No hardware. Lions. Matt Millen Lions.

Its not just Al's fault. His mind has gone. The press conference put any questions on that subject to rest.

His leeches bear just as much blame for this mess. They should be ashamed of themselves.

I'll raise a toast for you on Sunday at the Coliseum.

I cannot comprehend how this team, my team, our team has gotten to this point. I am so fustrated that I have become numb to the fact that the Raiders will not succeed till we clean house in the upper management of this team. No general manager is not
exceptable. And no Al is not that guy.You cannot allow a team as talented as this to under perform on a yearly basis. there is no reprecussions. Our coaches are handicap by Al systems and some coaches we have should not be here. Just watch the 49s and the ass chewing they are getting for being subpar. Mr Singletary will have that franchise going in the right direction very soon. How By holding every player accountable to his teamates and organazation. Yes he is rough at the edges but hell this is a mans sport, check your frail ego at the door, and prove your worth to the team. Bill Cowler 8 million dollar tag wold be money well spent.

RT,

I don't post often, but have been a regular reader since the beginning. Reading your post-game takes had become a weekly tradition with me and the wife. I'll miss the great reads immensely, as you have often been an inspiration through many long seasons. I should say this was a sad shock to read, but can't say I didn't see it coming. Good luck and hope you come back soon!

Welcome aboard Take! I've been a die hard Raider Fan since 1975. Each year these past 5 years, a part of me inside has kept saying "there is hope yet" and what do we get - another let down year of football. I finally made the same decision to step back after the Saints game. I will always keep one eye turned in their direction to follow their progress, but not 2 eyes.

First I want to say that it has been an honor becoming a part of Raider take and you, I have always thought of you as a friend.

I haven't been back here in a long time, first because I am so dissapointed at my Raiders and what they have become and second because I am tired, I feel that these last five years have taken a toll in my persona! I'm drained, I wish I could make these drama that my Raiders are dissapear and make it better, I can't! I know that a lot of us feel the same way about our team, I just wonder how long is this rollercoaster-embarrasement going to go for.

I love my Raiders but I have gone as far as not watching games until we go to .500, I love all sports but because of one reason or another I don't watch any other sports than football, but as I stated before, I am not going to watch them until we break the even bar.

Shawn, we all need to find a way to make our souls function, to me it's by telling the organization that not until they put a product that is worth my time, I am not going to spend my hard earned money.

By the way I also have tickets to the Texans game, I will go to that game but that't it, no more Raiders for me.

Again Shawn it has been a pleasure!

What followed was other Raiders fans sharing their own personal stories and viewpoints.

anyone read the raiders response to lane kiffin's grievance ?

it says in short, mr. kiffin's actions damaged the reputation and good will of the oakland raiders.

you mean, when kiff was coach, and we could almost beat a good team on the road, the raiders reputation was hurt ?

but now with cable, losing road games by 3 TD's, the rep. is enhanced somehow ?

also,if this is true, shouldn't al davis sue himself ????

Fair enough... I am simply going to live by the standards you are insisting with the Raiders.

If you are not willing to lift a finger to write posts here, I am not going to lift a finger to click on this blog much.

I'm not sure why you would expect ANYONE to come here considering the stand you are taking.

3:42 PM
Blogger Raider Take said...

Gary, I don't expect anyone to come here. I never have. I just started writing one day in September of 2005 and I've been blessed to have met you and countless others who have opted to join me in conversation.

I'm not taking a stand, either. I just came to a conclusion (with ample evidence cited) that winning is no longer the top priority in Oakland, and that led me to rearrange my own priorities.

I'm not shutting the site down, but I am taking a step back. Will that mean less traffic? Of course.

When the Raiders hire a proven head coach and a GM and show other firm signs of philosophical progress, I'm sure I'll be more inspired to write.

Today we hear that DeAngelo Hall was considering retirement like Javon Walker. That's what happens when insular thinking becomes more important than winning. You end up setting yourself back and wasting millions on low-character players who are essentially carbon copies of Randy Moss, LaMont Jordan, Jerry Porter, etc.

We will know winning has returned as a priority when guys like Hall and Walker are not even looked at, let alone signed.

4:13 PM
Blogger SCAR said...

Take, I haven't heard too many of Deangelo's comments and they sound pretty bad, but so far, imo, his game play has steadily improved. DeAngelo is not a weak link in the defense. Character is important, and so far DeAngelo hasnt shown it, but with all the action coming his way, he has done ok to good.

Walker is another story. from my vantage point, he isn't contributing as good as Schillens, a rookie seventh round draft choice. Man o man,,,Its Al's money, but couldnt ocho cinco have been had for that kinda money??

RT... I find it ironic that you use the FA acquisitions as proof that winning isn't a priority to Al.

That's just crazy... to NOT hire FA's is what on owner does if he his priority isn't winning (which Al got blasted for LAST year). The bad thing is Al picked a weak FA class to go shopping... but do use this as your excuse to bail on the team (something at least Al hasn't done yet) seems kind of disingenuous.

Look if you don't want to write anymore, or you are too busy to write anymore.... just fucking say that. To blame it on Al and the Raiders is BS... is all I am saying.

Al is swinging for the fences... same as he has done for the 40 years I have followed him and the Raiders. That he is striking out more is not an indication of desire... it's simply an indication of, well, suckage.

5:58 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

BTW... according to Al, most of the FA acquisitions this off season was at the insistence of Kiffin... and Kiffin has yet to say his side of the story. So now how are you going to blame Al as the problem here while always maintaining he always meddles with the coaches?

You guys always play from both sides of the deck... its aggravating.

Gary, I'm not bailing on my team. I'm just deciding not to write about them very often.

Like I said, I have no doubt that Mr. Davis and the organization believe that winning is their top priority.

But those free agents I cited (along with all of the other examples I cited in my post) are further evidence that insular thinking and a refusal to adapt are the real ruling priorities right now.

If Mr. Davis suddenly reversed his usual course and allowed a coach he deeply mistrusted to call the shots on $50+ million in free agent signings that look suspiciously like a lot of other failed Raiders signings (over-hyped players with character issues), that's just further evidence of gross mismanagement.

I think some of you are taking RT's recent decision to scale back on his blogging activities completely out of context and without perspective.

To imply that he is "bailing" on the Raiders is asinine.

To deduct that he won't continue to follow the Raiders is ridiculous.

To conclude that the lights will be completely turned off at Raider Take is presumptious.

Whether RT posts 1x a day, 1x a week, 1x a month or takes a "wait and see" approach is his, and only his choice.

Most of us are quite grateful to have had an outlet for 4 seasons to (a) enjoy RT's insight (b) share our views on Raider football.

This whole pissing contest about who is the more dedicated, loyal Raider fan is nothing more than an exercise in futility. Who really cares?

At the end of the day, we, as consumers, fans, and individuals all have the gift of free will. Free will to make choices with our life, time, money, and activities to serve our own best interest. Our choices are not fixed in time or stone. A choice we make today can be changed or modified tomorrow. Our feeling about the team today could be changed by external decisions made by the organization next season. So on and so forth.

When the fanbase is inspired by the play on the field and the direction of the organization, it is only natural that we will spend more time, money and devotion to being a fan.

Conversely, there are many fans who have been disheartened by the poor play the past 5+ seasons and the dysfunction of the organization. Because of this malaise, many fans are put in positions where they carefully weigh the cost to reward ratio ... just how much "entertainment" are you derving from this product? Some fans scale back, some reduce their purchase of gear, some turn the game off at halftime.

In the simplest terms, RT wants to take a break. After 500 posts and 4+ seasons of being a dedicated blogger and giving us a wonderful outlet to express our views, I think he has more than earned the right to take a break. For those complaining about RT's much deserved break, get off your fat, lazy asses and start your own damn blog or STFU. If you last more than 1 season blogging, get back to me. Otherwise your complaints are totally baseless and selfish.

Oh please.

This blog isn't even a blog anymore... blogs have people writing posts, people reading them, and maybe, MAYBE sometimes commenting.

This site is already almost 95% comments driven.

Don't believe me? Have RT take off the comments and see how many hits he has.

That would be an interesting blog... a blogger that refuses to blog, and what else is there? Links to other pages?

Look, I appreciate all RT has done in the past, and I enjoy this site because of his occasional posts... but mostly this is where Raider fans come to talk Raider football... I like your insights, as well as Blanda's, H's, NYRaider, even people I butt heads with all the time come up with great insights... like Bama.

There is maybe one post a week here, and that was too much? He spent more time arguing with me tonight about how his arguments made no sense than it takes to write his one post a week.

RT has a gold mine here and wants to piss it away because of some childish rant about Al not trying hard enough?

Pulease.

Give the keys to someone else if he doesn't want to do it. Don't whine that its Al's fault is all.

It makes me ill.

Calico Jack, thanks for your kind words, I really appreciate it.

Gary, the only one ranting here is you. I didn't say it's all Al's fault or that Al isn't trying. I said that winning is no longer the top priority in Oakland. I gave very clear examples of this, and you still haven't a refuted a single one.

Al Davis, as owner and de facto GM, is naturally most responsible for the fact that insular thinking and a refusal to adapt have become the ruling priorities, but I didn't say he doesn't have help. The incident of the ESPN article gave us a unique window into the inhabitants of the upper tier of the organization, and I believe that they are responsible as well for the culture of losing that has been more encouraged than addressed in recent years.

This is how, after tying the NFL record for consecutive 11+ loss seasons, you end up with a head coach whose only prior head coaching experience (in college) resulted in a .240 winning percentage, and with two overpaid free agents considering retirement.

You call me lazy, but you don't seem offended at all by guys making $5 million who can barely summon the effort to stay focused on football. This is your real issue. You're angrier at me for simply speaking the truth than you are at those responsible for the mess. Do you pine for Randy Moss, too?

I'll be rooting for them and watching every game as always, but it can be pretty taxing on a fan when they continually lose and make stupid moves (or non-moves)that do nothing to fix the issues.

My Raiders are a shell of their former greatness. A nice shiny lombardi shaped team on the outside, but pretty much made out of aluminum, held together with super glue and the tears of loyal fans.

I've resorted to Fantasy Football and I find myself rooting for some of the 'good' teams. They'll never replace my Raiders but at least they're interesting and score points.

Take….
Lincoln once said, “Consider the past, cherish your memoires, learn from history, but always move forward. Sorrow is a valid emotion- part of the richness of life. Therefore, feel it and endure it, but do not let allow melancholy to define who you are…,”

Life’s Three Great Decisions

1) Who will you live your life for? A marriage is not successful because of compatibility. Integrity is the key. Integrity to make a decision, make it yours and die by it.
2) What will you live your life in? A job is as sacred as a marriage. The person who doesn’t love, honor and cherish their work will never receive the rewards that come to those who live their work.
3) What will you live it for? Purpose and Motive. Purpose produces passion. If the motive isn’t right, the results will be wrong. We can succeed for ourselves or for God.

The Raiders (Al Davis) have lacked the integrity to do all that is necessary. They do not honor or cherish their fans like the days of old. There is no other purpose in life than God, your family, to put food on the table, to have a few good friends to laugh and cry with and Raiders Football. The results on the field are much more than just an embarrassment. It’s been a humiliation of who we are as fans. The motivation to have the passion that once glorified our football team is non existent. And without its inherent function to provide the utmost and utterly unfathomable display of football play on the field that would leave us all breathless; why shouldn't we take a step back and reevaluate our relationship with our beloved team?

Do we not deserve that?

Take I have welcomed your insight, as well as many of the other great Raider ‘Veteran’ Fans on your blog. I will miss your insight and hopefully we shall all see you in the future when we can rise again.

Until then, Take care and God Bless you……….

BTW... just to show I am not an Al ass kisser... here is something I wrote after last weeks game:

Dumbest team in America.. again???

Lets see... isn't the definition of insanity if you continue
to do the exact same thing over and over again hoping for
different results? I am at the point where I am no longer
worrying about SOB's competency I worry about his sanity.

The NFL is a complicated game except when the Raiders have a
third and long. They have the exact same defense every
time... rush four, have the LB's drop... and hope there is a
one on one tackle in front of the sticks. This might be a
great strategy with, well, the RAVENS defense... but our
defense doesn't exactly excel at one on one tackling. It
hasn't for 5 years (coincidently the same about of time SOB
has been out DC.)

Sooo beyond this... does he try to disguise this base
defense??? Nope... you can take a snapshot of the pre-snap
on the first third and long and it would look exactly the
same as every other third and long for the rest of the game.

Who else does this?

Dumb.

So what else do we have... Cable not calling TO's at the end
of the first half when there was about a minute left with
the strongest legged kicker in the history of the NFL on our
team?

Dumber.

Our kick returner catching the ball before it lands OOB's
just to run OOB's at the three???

Dumbest.

Fargas running into fat people instead of running into open
air... dumbest Mach 2.

Cover-2 defense... dumbest Mach 3.

OTOH... the penalties were down... and our Qb ran ONCE for a
first down (for the first time in his career that I recall!)

Progress!

I dunno... this team is more aggravating than any other in
the last 5 years because it would take SOOOOOOooo little for
us to be in the playoffs (SD and KC also both lost) and
there IS some talent to work with... but we just keep
dumbing ourselves out if every game.

Dumb coaches, dumb players, dumb owner???

I dunno. Maybe next week... baby steps...

I never lost Faith or Face and stood Tall-n-Strong even though I was facing 20 years...My young wife suported and stuck by me dispite what may have become personal danger to her...Released 9-26...

10-16 fighting broke out on the Thai-Khmer border and some people died...there was a whole sale evacuation and isolated violence in the border area where we live...I used a totally broken down 100cc chinese motor-bike that looked like the worst "Rat-Bike" you have ever seen to travel 250 kilo to a place of safty where she has family...There was NO gas left at the market and the bike was emty...

I walked 2-3 kilo with 2 3 liter coke bottles and found gas and walked back....6:00am we left and I was sure we would not make it but we did....

My motivation for blogging is to simply share my personal views about the Raiders. The regular visitors to my blog have enjoyed reading my posts. The positive feedback from the regular visitors and my own self satisfaction in writing is good enough for me.

Your whining and complaining about RT taking a break shows your true character ... petty and selfish.

You should be thanking RT for his tireless dedication to his blog for 4 years and providing you a nice, free outlet to express your opinions about the Raiders.

RT - your timing could not have been better. This game isn't even worth talking about.

In any other industry, under any other circumstances, Al Davis would have been fired long ago... and it's not even a close call.

This game is more proof than I ever needed.

remember that old beer commercial where the guy keeps saying "i love you man" ?

maybe al davis should hire him as head coach.

afterall, al believes if you love'em, they will be great.

the raiders used to be feared, but now are owned by the "love guru" himself, al davis.

I did.

You didn't want to see that though, did you?

Funny that.

Here it is again:

"Look, I appreciate all RT has done in the past" [...]

And btw we are STILL just 2 games out of first in the AFCW. lol

Take:

I came to the same conclusion at halftime in the Monday Night opener versus Denver.

I have not watched a Raiders game since. I DVR - if they win, I watch. If they loose, I delete. It's very liberating.

Next year we'll have a new staff and it's back to square one all over again.

Question is: who in their right mind will take on this task as a head coach.

Until the Raiders change the culture, loosing will continue. Until a Ron Wolfe or Bruce Allen or some strong, tough football executive comes in, we're skunked. Look what Parcells has already accomplished in Miami.

What I will miss most about your decision is that Raider Take was the only blog I've found that had respectful discussion amongst the participants. Everybody didn't agree, but it was a given that we were here for the same reason - to some degree we're all Raiders nutcases. Not a lot of dissing and name calling. For the most part, the regulars would not tolerate (nor should they) bad behavior.

I for one will miss your insights and clear headed thinking on our team.

And, I'll check back often to see if you've posted anything new.
