Beatdown by New Orleans

After today's beatdown, Tom Cable said, "I'm embarrassed."

You know it's bad when you're embarrassed by a preseason effort, or lack thereof.

I'm sure I'll hear the all-too-familiar refrain: Don't worry, be happy. It's not that bad. It's not part of a trend, or indicative of a pattern. It's just preseason. Just because our defense has been awful for years, and just because it's been awful this preseason, doesn't mean anything.

We live in a world of dots, not to be connected. Or so I'm often told.

Well, sorry. I'm with our coach on this one. I'm embarrassed.

The question for the Raiders is: How many times can you be embarrassed before you no longer can legitimately claim to be embarrassed? It's becoming an empty word. It's practically becoming a slogan: Oakland Raiders, We're embarrassed.

So go ahead, try and convince me that there's nothing to worry about. Tell me why I shouldn't fear that our head coach might be in over his head, that our defense isn't just more of the same old cirque du soleil (clowns flying around, hitting nothing), and that our offense isn't suffering from arrested development.

It'll all be fine come September.

Right?

I don't have much else to say, so I'm reposting from the previous thread.

That was just ugly. Looking past the score, can anyone identify bubble players that look like they're trying to make the team?

Nixon impressed with 2 or 3 tackles behind the line, but he was aweful in pass coverage.

Former AFL player, Hawkins made a big hit, but the Saints QB left his WR open to that.

Gary Russell is explosive, and made a nice play as gunner on SP.

Holland made a nice move on the Raiders' lone TD, but clearly against inferior coverage.

Murphy is not a bubble player, but he played pretty well... he just needs to secure the ball.

The Raiders should immediately get past this game and focus on the season. Clearly, they are not ready to compete with the Saints, and, by extension, probably not ready to compete with the Chargers.

The NO game was my road trip last year. Same result today but at least it didn't cost me anything.

Anyone want to question RT about his season ticket decision?

A thought about Nick Miller:

I'm thinking he doesn't make the final 53 unless Justin Miller's turf toe issues preclude a good KR season.

Nick is fighting for WR slot #6 or #7, right? If he can't do KR duties any better than he did today, they keep Justin Miller for KR/DB. And I think Nick is no better than Holland or Watkins at WR, plus having a decided height disadvantage.

I'm pullin' for him, but I think he's practice squad, if that.

Sliced up by the run last week.

Shredded by the pass this week.

Next week is a meaningless game with very few starters playing more than a series or 2.

A ton of unanswered questions about our D (and offense) linger.

I hope the team and coaching staff buckles down over the next few weeks and we come out sharp, focused, and ready for battle on the 14th.

Our season's fortune lies largely with games 1-3.

PantyRaider, I'm not being negative. I'm being observational.

If you're looking for negative, look at the Raiders. They were negative by 37 points yesterday. They were negative last week by 200+ rushing yards. Everyone on the team is saying they are "embarrassed" by yesterday's performance.

There's your negativity.

Panty, I couldn't figure out why you thought I was referencing the Hanson thing.

Now I realize that it was the word "arrested." That wasn't my intention, but I wish I'd thought of it. It would have been clever.

No, by arrested development, I mean not maturing and making progress.

In the most important warmup of the season, we had three first downs in the entire first half against the Saints, who are not known for their defense.

We netted 1 yard rushing for the half. Uno.

Arrested development.

I'm more of an optimist than anyone here. Truly. Simply by declaring myself as such, I am. With a capital "O." Now all of my observations are righteous, not negative. Now I state facts without being burdened by them. I can have it both ways. How dare you criticize the Raiders. Only I can do that, because I'm an Optimist. Hooray!

I'm in my early 40's. When I grew up as a kid watching the NFL, the Raiders were one of the 3-4 elite teams in the league. I look at them now and I can't even believe it. That team is so bad, so dysfunctional and such a catastrophe that's it's hard to remember when they were legit. They have become a place for malcontents, guys at the ends of their careers or guys just barely hanging on to stay in the league, go to get a paycheck. That thing has been mismanaged into the ground. They have had the same problems for 6 years now. A run defense that can't stop a thing. Bad QB play. A bad offensive line. Complete lack of discipline across the board. I don't even like the Raiders and yet I'll say it's sad that they have turned into this mess. No light at the end of the tunnel. They really are a joke.

The Raiders still have a 0-0 record. But, the first half, which is all I watched,...embarrassing.

I shell out 250 plus bucks for nfl sunday ticket, because I live several thousand miles away, solely so that I can watch the Raiders play, not Peyton Manning, not the Steelers, Not the Saints.

Holy hijinks batman, do the Raiders have something up thier sleeve?? I played many sports but never organinized football, even though I have been a fan of the raiders since I was seven,,so I dont know about x and y and gap assignments,,,I know what I see with my eyes and the scoreboard. That was disgusting
0-0. Monday night vs the chargers in two weeks.

I am more than embarrassed, more like saying humiliated, horrified, ashamed and utterly disappointed with the way we were handed our asses’ on a sliver platter.

The defense still doesn’t seem to get the job done. Is it really Al Davis’ fault (which we already know it is), maybe it’s John Marshall, or is it that we don’t have any real talent on the front 4, besides Ellis? Tommy Kelly got face planted on back to back plays near the goal line.....and Trevor Scott (whom I was pulling for since his rookie year) seems to only want to attack the QB, but leaves huge lanes for the runners to skip through like Goldie locks.

Cable can say what he wants as far as getting the D on the same page, staying in gaps, tackling…..etc Whatever makes the team sleep better at night I guess.

But like Ellis said, "Guys, you can't stay out all night, can't expect to come in here and just turn it on," Ellis was quoted "This isn't high school or college football. This is the best of the best in the NFL. So you've got to do those small things that you maybe didn't have to do in college."

It's said that a veteran like Greg Ellis can legitimately make that observation about our team. That says it all.

There's Calico with a little gallows humor. Right on, man.

Hey, we stunk it up, but there is a bright side. Number 1, it pretty much can't get any worse. Number 2, it's just the preseason. And number 3, Jamarcus really isn't to blame. In fact, he made a couple excellent moves on plays I thought were sure sacks. The receivers just didn't get it done.

This one is pretty much all on the D. That was absolutely abysmal. The middle of the field was just completely open. Even Nnamdi got beat. The safeties didn't look that great. I thought Huff looked alright. Maybe we should start him again. It bears mentioning that we got beat on the blitz a couple of times for screen passes. It's all about effective use of the blitz, and when you can't cover your receiver, it doesn't matter how many pass rushers you bring. Especially with a guy like Brees.

Embarrassing is the perfect word for it, but I won't go doom and gloom just yet.

Oh, and Arkansas, I'll make sure to check out your blog. That seems like the best idea.

Embarrassing doesn’t quite capture it. More like, despicable!

Talk is cheap.

The Raiders can talk fundamentals until they turn purple, and they can apologize to the fans all they want....

Pre-season or not, that game clearly demonstrated the Saints are light years ahead of the Raiders in terms of being a competitive football team (whatever the reasons).

Imagine how much worse the beat down could have been if Brees wasn’t pulled after his 3rd straight TD?

Should we expect another top draft pick in 2010.

We have been seeding top 10 in the draft so long, soon our previous picks will start retiring and we still won’t be any better.

“But Please...How the hell do you blame this poor-asses performance on an 80yr old Al Davis sitting in a booth with his Walker at his side.....” PR

Panty……You can spin it whichever way you like.

There have been several discussions over the course of the past 2 seasons as to why Al Davis is responsible for the debacle we saw yesterday as well as for the last 6 seasons and counting. Doesn’t he own the team? Doesn’t he have the final say on draft choices? Doesn’t he select from the FA pool? Doesn’t he work with all aspects of negotiating contracts? He does it all except put on the pads himself. Well doesn’t he……….???

Al Davis controls this team from top to bottom. I do place the blame on the owner who is supposed to be correcting the problem instead of making the same mistake over and over again. How many times has RT discussed in detail the reasons why Al does deserves the blame at times and celebration at times?

We sorely lack the necessary talent on the Defensive line to create pressure and stuff the run, besides the few key players. I don’t care what player looks good on paper, I don’t care what BSPN rates players and our team, and I don’t care about how great player was. I care about only one thing……..Winning

The failure to realize the obvious only means that you accept this type of conduct from a business stand point and enjoy the product on the field that you see day in and day out. Regardless whether it’s preseason or whatever you want to call it. You are telling me this is acceptable behavior from a “Professional Football Team?" Everything will be ok and things just need to be cleaned up, or whatever the solution maybe for that week. If that helps you sleep more peacefully at night more power to you. You are entitled to your opinion, just as I am.

I don’t accept half ass excuses. I only accept surgically executed, professional football on all 3 sides of the ball. End of story.

Embarrasing is putting it mildly for me. What happened to the team at the end of last season, that did not look like the same team to me. God knows I pray that we can get it together, because I tired of being the brunt of everybody's joke. But I'm not giving up on my raiders, because I bleed silver and black.

I know that the saints have a good quarterback, but they are not that good. Man we sure did make them look good. So I'm not givin up on my boys, I just hope they can get it together before the chargers come to the black hole. Because if they don't it will be worse than yesterday.

My previous post was only partly tongue in cheek.

My new perspective, which has evolved over the past few years, is to simply call a spade a spade.

I still hope for the best and love being a Raider fan but I don't feel obligated to throw on rose tinted glasses.

How would we feel about our defensive prospects if we drafted NT B.J. Raji and LB Rey Maleuga in the 1st 2 rounds? The strength of our defense is 2 very good cover corners. Beyond that, our D is inadaquate in every phase of playing defense.

I will feel we have turned the corner when the priority in draft choices and FA acquisitions is on addressing the D and not stockpiling DBs and WRs who run really fast.

When you have arrived at a point in time where you cannot single out 1 defender who is an above avergage run stopper there is something very wrong.

Go down the list 1-11 and point out 1 player who is noted for being a good run defender. It has never been about how many tackles you pile up in a season. The fact is that teams run the ball more than pass against us. Unless the opponent gets into the end zone, someone is going to be "credited" with a tackle. It is a meaningless stat. What really matters is a defender diagnosing the play correctly and negating 5+ yard runs.

Watched a little of the game last night... Chicago/Denver. Neither team is great, but both know how to stuff the run and pressure the QB. One thing about Denver, Orton doesn’t (can’t) throw down field. They now rely entirely on ball control... which should work fine against the Raiders we saw Sat.

Like everyone else I've been listening to what everybody has had to say after the N.O. debacle and it seems to me Greg Ellis has put his finger on it. You get a bunch of unfocused, hungover guys and put them against arguably the best offense in football and there is your result. Not to mention those hungover unfocused guys are put in black uniforms on a 90+ degree day (who's brilliant idea was that?). Anybody who has coached any sport at any level knows when players are roasting and dehydrated they don't perform. You may laugh but don't under estimate the heat factor. As far as the hungover unfocused stuff- let's hope there is a wake-up call. So try not to go too deep into this fellows. We can't be out on the ledge in August it's way too early.

You'd think that the wake-up call might have been the Falcons game last year. Or the pathetic showing in 2007. Or the 2-14 record the year before. Or recently setting the NFL record for most consecutive seasons of 11 or more losses. Or maybe the 275 yards given up to the 49ers last week.

We've become the Rip Van Winkle of the NFL. Nothing wakes us up.

The weather didn't sneak up on anyone, either. Everyone knew it was going to be hot on Saturday.

Not taking the job seriously and partying the night before a game, any game, is an affront to the paying fans.

And people wonder why I wasn't confident enough in this group to renew my season tickets.

Season ticket holders are REQUIRED to buy the preseason tickets. The should be offered a FULL refund for Saturday's game. Put your embarrassment where your mouth is, Raiders, and give back the money you stole on Saturday.

We needn't go through the insane exercise of debating whether or not this player is good, or whether so and so is wrapping up or neglecting a gap, or whether or not a particular draft pick was a reach or bust etc, etc.
There is only one cure for our situation and that is a STRONG/PROVEN commodity at coach and/or GM... and they have to be given clear authority.
We need a Parcells type that can come in and CHANGE our culture and schemes.
To me, and this may be blasphemy on this board, the perfect guy is Shottenheimer. We need to build a disiplined, stout, strong, blue collar football team that plays hard and smart. That was the hallmark of his teams.
I'd love to have the guy.
But really, at this point, is there any hope that we'll change our ways any time soon?
