Exclusive "Badasses" Author Interview

Okay, Raider Nation, we have a doozy here: an exclusive interview with Peter Richmond, author of the awesome new book Badasses: The Legend of Snake, Foo, Dr. Death, and John Madden's Oakland Raiders.

Trust me, don't think twice, just go out and buy the book. It belongs on the bookshelf of every Raiders fan. Please forward this take to every Raiders fan you know, we need to reward Mr. Richmond for adding a remarkable new chapter to the lore of the Oakland Raiders.

Without further ado...

What prompted you to write this book?

My last book was The Glory Game, with Frank Gifford, about the 1958 NFL championship between the Colts and the Giants. It was totally cool to immerse myself in the days before football grew into such a corporate, high-money machine, with so many rules protecting the players. Back then, these guys played for the love of the game and the love of their teammates – definitely not money, because there wasn’t any. So when I was done with that one, I asked myself: What was the last team to play for all the right reasons? That played with wild abandon? That played for each other, and a coach who was one of the guys? It’s a no-brainer: Ken Stabler’s Oakland Raiders, whom I used to watch back east in college on the Sunday late games. I became a total Raider addict, from Davis on down, because they were so damned fun to watch. Then, as I began to cover the game in the 80s, and America’s Team emerged, and the money began to breed a whole new kind of athlete -- I realized that the ‘70s Raiders were special. And so I went back to rediscover that pure, elemental joy.

What surprised you most about what you discovered when researching the book?

How incredibly smart they were. I’ve interviewed thousands of athletes. I didn’t expect that most of the guys I talked to were not only smarter than most football players, but smarter than most people. Not just Davis and Madden, of course. But Hendricks wanted to talk about ancient civilization. Gerald Irons found out he was cut when he was taking a masters class in macroeconomics. Duane Benson was a state senator. George Atkinson and I talked more about zen philosophy and the nature of the universe than we did about football. Kelvin Korver owns three navigational patents. Bob Moore is a cerebral lawyer. George Buehler is a madman genius. Villapiano, when he isn’t using the word “fuckin’,” could be the best motivational speaker on the planet (come to think of it, he should use the word..) And that’s just off the top of my head. No wonder they won: Madden didn’t have to drill them endlessly; they picked it all up the first time around.

How much of the early Raiders culture was by design, and how much of it was just serendipity or alchemy?

Great question. The serendipity came first: the name Raiders; being a last-second addition to the league, playing in the shadows of Tony Bennett’s fantasy-town for an underdog city. The pieces were in place. Then, when Davis came in, the sinister/rebellious culture became more by design, reflecting his personality: us against them. Win with players other people discarded. Win any way you can, at any cost – and other than that, there are no rules. The partying was not only a reflection of the players – loose, oblivious to meaningless (NFL) authority – but the collective vibe of the team: have fun all the time, especially on Sunday. When other teams were tight, the Raiders were having fun. And when they realized that the collective image of being Badasses helped them win games, they fed off it.

Can you tell us something about a Raiders legend that we might not know?

That Jack Tatum would have been a farmer if he hadn’t been a football player. That George Atkinson collects Egyptology. That it was Willie Brown’s bed that Bob Brown fired his pistol into. That Ken Stabler is the most modest, self-deprecating star I’ve ever talked to. That John Madden’s ego-less office doesn’t have a single thing in it that celebrates his triumphs. That Al Davis is still as sharp as a tack. That Freddy Biletnikoff doesn’t leave any Stickum on your hand when you shake his. Dave Dalby was the nicest guy on the team, by universal acclaim. Ted Hendricks is no longer the wild and crazy guy who would lie on the floor of the Notre Dame bus, spit to the top of the bus, and catch it in his mouth on the way down. On the other hand, Villapino is as wild and crazy as he was in 1976. No, crazier.

Thank you, Peter! Let's show our appreciation and share our own memories in the comments section.

Those were the glory years, it's why us older than 40, have this team under our skin. We need a new era, instead of trying to recapture this one you reference in this Take.

The org is off beat, but now in a way that can never succeed. In those days, it was the perfect storm, players attitudes, freedoms, mixed with an Owner and Org that allowed it. The close minded society that hated anything different, where as the Raiders embraced it. It was anti society and that was the mood of the country after Vietnam and Watergate.

Today, society is built in a manner that KILLS this. It is now so structured that the only way to win is a well oiled machine. From top on down, no more winging it, no more putting it just on the players to go out and just win.

Players think business today, Coaches only accept business style players and players today could not do what those players used to do. Today = Robots, the dysfunction makes their programming go haywired. They cannot flourish in this environment that they 70's Raider teams blossomed in. We will never see that era again, though it seems, the Raiders are hellbent on trying.

Outstanding Take!

I'll be going out and buying that book ASAP.

My hope is that our team gets it's butt back in gear enough to write a new chapter that mirrors that one. The recent stuff is more like the antithesis...

To Jones: I think you're completely right-on: The Badasses outlaw rebellion, which was an innocent and harmless one, could thrive, even in a conservative sports league, because society still trying to figure out the Sixties, and rebellion was part of our vocabulary. Not now: rebellion either goes unnoticed, or turns into fanaticism. But the real reason we'll never go back is that we can't peel back to the days before free agency, when groups of guys would play together 9, 10, 11 years, and really learn to love each other. Now, no matter how much they love their teammates, they'll still flee town for higher bucks (as if the bucks they're making with their own teams aren't enough...) You know what was most amazing about writing the book? Every old Raider I called had every other old Raider's telephone number or e-mail. They still drink together. They still see each other all the time. Imagine that happening 30 years from now with, say, the Cowboys.

Thank you Peter and Take for your kind words. Peter, your book should do very well, there are millions of fans just like us, who grew up with the "team of the decades". Who crave an insiders look into the makings and characters of those teams. Thank you for your work, Peter.

___ "Not now: rebellion either goes unnoticed, or turns into fanaticism"___

I'll go one further, it is now being classified as "terrorist behavior". This is how far society has gone to "1984" THE BOOK. It's like George said "you are either with us, or, you are against us".

If you follow this site, you will see that mentality a lot, some fans draw that line to other fans all the time. Nobody is allowed to be an individual anymore, able to go against the norm without being called a traitor or deserter. Anyways, hope you stick around here and share some of your stories without giving away your book, take care.

Outstanding! There’s no question players of the 70's had a different purpose. Money has helped changed the culture of football. And it starts early, with ridiculous mega-contracts given to rookies who haven't played a snap in the NFL. Not only is the "love" lost, but there has to be resentment among players regarding huge disparities in contracts. Players are conditioned to think and say “it's part of the business." So it’s become impersonal and opposite of what it once was.

"What was the last team to play for all the right reasons? That played with wild abandon? That played for each other, and a coach who was one of the guys?"

This is what makes the Raiders special. This is why the 40+ year olds that are Raiders fans are still Raiders fans and still "living" those days and longing for those days. We know it's not coming back, not in that way. If the Raiders get better though we just might get a glimpse of that feeling again, that pride and poise, that attitude...

There is always room for optimism, for one reason: even with big money and free agency, one thing never changes: coaches. The old Raiders played for John because he treated them like men: "On the field, play. Off the field, play," as Stabler told me. He'd get to know each player individually. They loved him for it. And while new coaches tend to think the Belichik mold is the one to follow (be impersonal, let coordinators deal with the players) (see Eric Mangini)...there is still room for a Rex Ryan in the NFL: big, jolly, knows and likes his players...and right now his Jets are playing for him. I get the idea that Cable is the wrong man for this group. The talent is fairly equal from team to team; the talent's relationship to its coach is a huge factor. You just need a new coach.

The Raiders need a HC who is allowed to be the HC. The quality of HC is in direct relation to the GM/Owner. With the GM/Owner the Raiders have now, it's impossible to attract the quality needed. That's the fact of it, the HC will never be good enough to overcome the obstacles stuck in his way by the GM/Owner. It's a cycle that has to be broken first before any HC can succeed.

Jones: you're right...BUT: The Davis I interviewed is still totally all there, and is burning to get back to supremacy...it's his Legacy, which means more to him than any owner out there...so there is always the chance in the next few years, in his search for a way to go out on top, that he'll stumble on a coach who knows how to relate to his players. He won't stick with Cable much longer if this turns out to be a 5-11 season, right? So maybe Ryan leads the Jets to another conference championship this year, and Al starts to understand that the key to getting back to the Badass days us to find another Madden. Like I said: thanks to free agency and the scouting combines and the internet, talent is pretty much equal across the league: the Giants' fourth receiver is as good as the Lions' fourth receiver, who is as good as Saints' fourth receiver, etc. The difference is the HC who makes that fourth receiver turn into Wes Welker, or Anquan Boldin (sp). And Al ain't no dummy. He wants to win. My guess? In the next 2-3 years, he'll figure it out, and you'll be in the running...if he can establish, as Madden did, a winning/comfortable environment that other players want to be a part of. And that starts with a coach whom players want to play for. Every player in the league talks to every other player in the league; it's a small club. When good players hear that some other team has a coach who lets them be themselves, as Madden did, they want be part of it. As soon as Moss arrived with you guys, he sensed something wrong, and wanted out. You need a coach whom players want to play for. Go 8-8 this year. Fire Cable. Bring in someone who isn't afraid to let the players have their space -- a HC who can convince the players that this franchise was once proud and feared, and can be so again: that the silver and black are the most famous colors (or non-colors) in all of American sport history. Then if there's a 2011 season, go 9-7. Then you''ll be back in the game.

Well, next time you interview Al, tell him I told you that he needs to hire someone else to get the job done. He has shown that he is no longer able to get it done.

No disrespect to Al, he is a legend, but he can't live off the legend anymore. His way, his style, DOESN'T WORK. Did any of the players you interviewed tell you that? If they didn't, it suprises me, cause it is very obvious.

No one can work with Al, no quality HC will go through it, it's a proven losing formula. A HC of today wants to control the team, once someone undermines or over rules his strategies, his picking of the players or his dealings with assistants. It doesn't work, especially with Al because of his strong personality and his unwillingness to give up operational control of the team.

Quality HC's will not go for that arrangement, so, Raider fans are left waiting for that "perfect storm" ala Gruden. The odds are slim and Raider fans deserve better.

Great take, Peter. How often do we hear how "talented" the Raiders are? We've been hearing it for years, but the results remain the same. Could the right coach finally unleash that alleged talent?

That said, I do think we've have issues on the talent evaluation front that are still being worked out. There's been improvement lately, so that's a good sign.

What I don't understand, and maybe Peter can help me with this, is why Mr. Davis has abandoned some of the key tenets of our previous success. For example, during the glory years, he always had strong executive support on the football side (ie: general manager types). Guys like Ron Wolf and Al LoCasale and, yes, even Bruce Allen. Why has Mr. Davis abandoned that model, even after he and Madden both admitted publicly that a strong executive presence is overdue?

You Quoted from the research study and you posted....

"In fact, the research says the more powerful the person in terms of status and admiration, the faster whatever they're doing nonverbally transfers to the rest of the group."

Now I want you to think for a moment and remember how this board degenerated when you publicly denounced your season tickets and began your campaign of "Doom-n-Gloom"...As I posted this board is a direct reflection of you and NOT of any posters who comment here...

Regarding Mr Davis:

He is the "Maverick"...That may not translate well to "Generation X" but he is from an era far before our common time...I'm 60 and he is as my father's age to be exact....Also he is the "Earth Snake"....

CHARACTERISTICS

Acute, Aware, Cunning, Proud, Vain, Vicious

THE EARTH SNAKE 1929 AND 1989

Earth Snakes are the most relaxed of the breeds. They lead calm lives and offer a down-to-earth appeal to any conversation or outing. This may make them seem more friendly, as you may not feel the need to wonder what he’s got up his sleeve. They may also shun the need to lash out or take risks, but it isn’t from paranoia. They figure their good sense and work ethic will pay off and bring them much fortune and material satisfaction.

The Snake is the intuitive, introspective, refined and collected of the Animal Signs. They are attractive people who take cries with ease and do not become flustered easily. They are graceful people, exciting and dark at the same time.

Contemplative and private, the Snake is not outwardly emotional. He can appear cunning and reticent and works very modestly in the business environment. The Snake will plot and scheme to make certain things turn out exactly as they want them to. They are not great communicators and can become quite possessive when they set their minds on achieving the interest of a partner.

I find your work interesting but as usual there will always be something to take exception with...In this case I would like to know why you present this based upon personality as it appears it is...
----------------------------------
I get the idea that Cable is the wrong man for this group. The talent is fairly equal from team to team; the talent's relationship to its coach is a huge factor. You just need a new coach.
----------------------------------
I would like to note that last year with the whole "JawBone" incident the players seemed rather entertained and demonstrated some comradely with their "HC"....

My exception with Cable is his apparent lack of play calling and offensive design capability....He made stupid mistakes trying to get cute when his team couldn't even execute the simple stuff yet...Thus the solution of adding Hue as our "OC" who also seems to have a good relationship with the players on both sides of the ball...

But admittedly I'm drawing my comparisons from some 10,000 miles outside USAirSpace and have no recent connection with this team...So I'm interested to know what you perceive to be the problems and why...

The Raiders are clearly leading in every category and should have the advantage...

Granted home-field is worth about 3 pts but the Raiders should be favored by at least 2 pts which would make that a 1 pt game....NOT a 4 pt game...

Well hopefully it's fuel for the fire as the Raiders get angry...Or do we play angry anymore...That's what I was expecting last Sunday but didn't see any indications it was relevant...

PantyRaider (nice webname!): Davis, infirm physically but intact mentally, is not out of touch with the ways that victory is achieved. His model, and his goal -- win at all costs -- goes back to the beginning of civilization. (See Gilgamesh, circa. 4750 BC, see Alexander the Great, 350 BC, see Patton, 1944 AD- sorry, I used to teach history) and consider this: the exceptional leaders learn that, at some point, they have to sublimate their egos to achieve the final legacy. In 35 years of sportswriting, where I learned that football is the only sport in America based on military history (which is what Al is basing _everything_ on) (and why I love the sport so much: it's war on turf) I recognized that actual military geniuses can adapt to the circumstances of the context in which they're fighting their battles. I could easily be wrong here, but from what I know of the man: a few more losing seasons, and he will find the coach he needs. The recent drafts have featured failures, yes, but they've also produced successes. Because I like and admire Davis (I mean, he has the rings to merit the admiration; would you rather be a Lions' fan?), and the team, I'm going to guess that his wits and his lust for victory will help him find the right lieutenants (Wolf, Madden in the old days) to get back in contention. You say that the modern HC has to be in command? Not so. 5,000 years of modern history tells us the contrary: adapt to survive and conquer. Madden knew _exactly_ what he was getting into in 1971: being obesiant to a dominant owner...who would give him space to coach, if he proved he could handle (renegade) players. John handled that role, brilliantly. So did Flores. And hell, Bill Callaghan even got us to the final round, not that long ago, and he wasn't a great tactical coach...but he won the AFC(I still don't know how...) Bottom line, Al ain't dumb: he lives, in his final years, to win. For many decades -- like Augustus, Rome's greatest emperor -- the man has proven himself. And for the time being, you're stuck with him. So, as a fan, as you and I are both are, can 1) whine about our state, 2) trust in the innate wisdom of the greatest general/warrior -- in the historical sense - the game has ever known. Me, I'm an optimist/historian, so, as long as know that Al is all there -- which I know he is, from recent personal experience - I'm going to trust him, within the next 3/4 years, to find, finally, the right coach to restore the Legacy: the coach who can translate Al's dictator mandates into a message the modern player can relate to.

Well Peter, you can keep waiting. The only time I will get excited again is when Al makes himself hire the best man he can find to run the Org. Then Al will tell us all that he is stepping down and allowing the team to go in a new direction.

It's a proven fact that the way Al does business doesn't translate to wins IN THIS DAY AND AGE OF THE NFL. He will never find that coach you say is needed, one that can withstand Al and bring the team together, it reminds me of a comment by a poster 00. He said he feels deep down that the Raiders will be outcoached every week.

You said it, the difference between winning and losing is the coaching. Well, with Al's system, the Raiders will always be outcoached.

Players today don't respect a HC that takes orders, as far as game strategy etc. Instead of hoping Al somehow finds that magic combo, I would rather see a more proven method towards winning.

If Raiders history has taught us anything over the past 40+ years, it is very evident and clear that when Davis has an executive to lean on and support his endeavors, the Raiders have been successful.

Conversely, when Davis is without a trusted executive partner, the Raiders have failed miserably.

It might be an over-simplification but history, my heart, and my mind all tell me one thing:

Davis needs to go back to the one true and tested formula of success ASAP before the hour glass runs out of sand. Specifically, he needs to hire an executive football professional to support himself and and the HC.

To expect a 82 year old man to wear the hats of Owner and GM and run a $800M enterprise in a highly competitive league is expecting the impossible.

You don't have to meet the man to see the results of his work. Speculation is saying he just needs to find that one guy who is compatible and can bring the team into this century. Al had the guy, but once again, Al decided he wanted to turn back the clock instead of going forward. Ever since, the Raiders have been stuck in a time warp.

Meeting Al would be a great honor, doesn't mean it would change the fact that doing it Al's way won't work. That is PROVEN, Peter has had the honor of meeting these people and writing about them. Doesn't mean he is an authority on what is needed for the Raider franchise to "turn the corner". But Panty trying to use this as proof that Al's way will still work.....you need to fly STRAIGHT.
