Tom Cable Cut Loose?

UPDATE: It's official. Cable is fired.

The rumors about Tom Cable's alleged imminent firing have reached the next level with
a report this evening that he has been cut loose by Al Davis.

This story has not been officially confirmed, so I don't know if it's true. If it's not, then shame must be heaped upon the perpetrators. But the language of the report sounds certain, and therefore the news that Tom Cable is no longer the coach of the Oakland Raider bears following, and hopefully we'll have official denial or verification soon.

If Cable has been cut loose, then I am at a loss for words. He fielded a Raiders team this year that was by far the strongest Oakland outfit in eight years. I wasn't a big believer in Cable at the outset, and I'm still not convinced that he is an elite coach. But I have become convinced that he has successfully navigated the organizational waters, elevated the character and performance of the team, and positioned the Oakland Raiders for bigger things to come in 2011.

Looking at it another way, if he's not worthy of coaching the Raiders in 2011, then he certainly wasn't worthy of coaching the Raiders in 2010. He was rewarded for barely a baby step in 2009, but fired after a near quantum leap in 2010?

Say it ain't so.

R.T. the only reason Cable was canned is because Al doesn't want to lose Jackson. Otherwise Cable would be the coach in 2011 and beyond.Let's face it, even with a few real stinkers of a game plan, the offense made an incredible improvement. whether this guy is a head coach will remain to be seen.

Whatever. But for the first time in many coaching changes, the new coach actually has some shoes to fill. Whether it's Jackson or someone else, they'd better be good, and they'd better be ready to navigate the organizational waters.

Al Davis just simply can't resist shooting himself in the foot, can he? For the last ten+ years, as soon as this team starts inspiring hope he does something to take it away.

I hear you bro. This is getting nauseating with all the changes. And just when it looked like we were ready to break through, now this. Like you I am at a loss. And unlike the past I am not going to give the old man the benefit of the doubt anymore. They damn well better contend next season otherwise this is Davis's swan song.

Bottom line, Cable is WAY more qualified to coach the Raiders in 2011 than he was in 2008, 2009 or 2010.

So it seems like we've been going about this backwards, does it not?

Depends on whom you're asking, Topher.

I mean, we've got folks here who are literally over the moon and beating their chests with 8-8.

As for me, I view it as a starting point.

I guess I just don't understand how you go from re-hiring Cable after zero progress in the win column, then firing him 12 months later after serious progress?

The moment he actually demonstrates that he's truly qualified for the job, he gets sacked?

Plan B had better be a good one.

The real quandary here is what if someone else offers Hugh a head coaching job and he takes it! Then we lose both Cable and Jackson! Talk about going backwards. The old man better have Jackson wrapped up.

What surprises me is that most of Raider fans' complaints this year was with the offensive play calling and that was the responsibility of Hue Jackson, who is reported to be the new coach.

The Oakland Raiders will not extend the contract of Tom Cable for the position of Head Coach.

Cable was informed that his contract would not be extended on Tuesday.

Cable, whose contract expired at the conclusion of the 2010 season, posted a 17-27 regular season record as Head Coach of the Raiders. He served as offensive line coach for the Raiders from 2007-September 30, 2008, when he was named interim head coach.

The Raiders express gratitude to Tom Cable for his contributions in his four seasons as an assistant and as Head Coach of the Silver and Black.

The offense performed significantly better this year, the defense only slightly so. Hue must be given the lions share of that credit though I must say Cable was burdened with Jamarcus when he commanded the offense. If Hue's the new HC and the Raiders thought he might be offered a position elsewhere it's understandable. If they go in another direction well, it won't be the first time management has left us scratching our heads.

Al makes it very hard to be a Raider fan, if he doesn't upgrade the position (HC), he's then a real fool. It's almost like Al wants to lose, he doesn't want harmony, he doesn't want stability. Aso is shaking his head tonight, Woodson is saying that the old man is crazy, with a grin. Guess Cable didn't kiss the Emperor's ass enough, not playing Campbell, sitting DHB for some periods, Al said, NO WAY TOM BOY. Who is going to work for the DICTATOR? Huey? Is he just another yesman, seems to be, man, just once, some stability with less drama would be so much more conducive to WINNING. Everything else becomes more important than the winning, which should be #1. I really don't like this and Al just sat on my face again, thanks Al, maybe next time he could wipe his ass first.

I am simply stunned. We just crushed our arch rivals for 6 wins. We had meaningful games into December - (we're usually out of it by end of September)

And I was wearing my Raiders gear and not being laughed at.

Cable brought a no-BS swagger to a team that played at or near its skill level.

Sure, we lost at least 4 games that we should have won...and in reality should have made the playoffs.

There has to be a big swinger on deck - otherwise why make this move?

A great canidate would be nuts to take this job and all the chaos that goes with the position.

Worst - we are flat back to square one one more time with absolutely no idea what to look forward to.

Could be worse - we could be Chargers fans.

Bottom line is and always will be for this past season...
1) Hands down, one of the best drafts in recent memory.

2) Al dumped his beloved Poster Child aka JaMarcus R for Bruce “statuesque” Campbell.

3) Had a solid free agency

4) Added Hue Jackson

That was Al's answer from 2009's disaster....the 53 men on this team were playoff caliber. And in Al’s mind; having swept the division means little when you go 2-8 out of the division.

How many times did we all see the rollercoaster Raiders rear its ugly head in games like? Losses to the Titans, Cardinals, Texans, 49ers, Dolphins, Jaguars and the Colts ( Which maybe a stretch but I saw the game live and have yet to blog about my experience) Those games were costly and in some of those games, Cable pulls Campbell who was God awful at times for Owski. Then Hue says this at the end of our season ending game, “He (Campbell) played well this season, but were coming back next year and are going to be better.” I didn't think Campbell played that well. He was not that great but was average.

All of us knew Al compared Campbell to Plunkett. Al knew very well that this team could go deep into the playoffs.

Hue Jackson’s play calling has been questionable at times. The Colts game was evidence enough that Hue tends to stick to the game play from the practice week. There were no adjustments made at half time. Honestly how can Jason C. call a play at the line of scrimmage, not audiblize when the box is stacked/swarming with blitz packages, lock onto a receiver to his right, and then 10 yds down the field with J. Ford open to his left and never throw him the ball? Why would Hue Jackson call for a check down to RunDMC and have him run outside on a Speed Cover 2 Defense knowing Macfadden couldn't out run their speed to the outside? I mean if he’s an offensive genius shouldn’t those things have been seen on tape and then implemented a game plan on the Colts weaknesses?

I mean I just don’t understand what was seen in that game from his vantage point.

We have always stated on this blog the one key element needed to win games was "controlling/winning in the trenches." The offensive lost a lot of battles. That was Cables’ forte and he misjudged some guys on that line and only kept in his players he wanted in. Once again, no adjustments made signficiant progress. All of us knew that. John Marshall did a times show a lot of blitz packages which may cost him his job, but it worked. But can you honestly blame him for the D players not tackling their guys? I mean you can talk about your gaps, your assignments, the scheme all you want. But the bottom line is that some of those guys lost their edge at some moments of the game throughout the season. Where they’d give up on plays or lose sight of those players they were to cover. T. Branch, S Routt, C Johnson all got burnt throughout the season. Solid play is consistent and that’s where we couldn’t build from. In the PRO’s if you can’t perform, then why are you here in the 1st place? Or is it that we don't need better players just scholarships?

Now I’m not saying firing Cable was the right thing to do. I wanted consistency as much as anyone here and the players wanted too. But Al knows the players will get over this. Cause their paid to perform and execute plays. Not lobby for coaches (See Joe Bugel experiment) I honestly don’t think Hue is the answer either. Maybe he is, but of what I saw this season I was not happy by some of the play calling. Did we have some monster games? Totally. Did we dominate those games? Yes. But there are still questions from those games where we lost when we clearly were ahead and could have easily won.

But still its going to be another fun filled adventure in Raiderland.

11:26 PM
Blogger nyraider said...

Certainly not the news I was hoping to read this morning.

RT makes the point that I would make. That is, if Cable is not qualified to coach the Raiders in 2011, how was he qualified to coach them in 2009 and 2010?

Why are we being forced to watch paint dry?

There's almost no way this move is a step forward. At best it's a lateral move, and more likely a step backward.

Al Davis will not pay Harbaugh (or any other top candidate) $5.0 million a year to coach the Raiders, so put that right out of your head.

The only chance we have at maintaining continuity is through Hue Jackson.

We can speculate all day why Cable was fired. I would think it’s not because of his record but because of some insubordination, like pulling Campbell for Gradkowski or not playing DHB.

In this same vein, I would expect John Marshall to be shown the door for blitzing too much.

I will reserve further judgement until more smoke clears, but it may be time for Al Davis to hit the field and just coach this team himself.

I’m sorry, but the “white flag approach” is off.

5:51 AM
Blogger nyraider said...

One more thought. The timing of this move is totally out of character for Al Davis.

There must be a specific reason that Davis was "forced" to make this untimely decision.

Perhaps he was afraid he'd lose Jackson, or perhaps he was pissed at Cable for going on Sirius Radio, or perhaps he has another coach in mind.

Whatever it is, it should be interesting.

Fire up the overhead projector, anyone?

Yup Lechler paints the picture of how it works in Raiderland, it coincides with what Sapp says as well as others. Al is the dictator, coaches step out of bounds in his dictatorship and they are gone. Funny how a guy that doesn't call plays on either side of the ball, yet has somehow managed to completely unify the locker room and create a winning spirit among the team is deemed expendable.

Shows you what a little bit of chemistry is worth to Al Davis. Nothing. It might have been the rally cry of the players to retain Cable that caused his demised.

Now, Jackson will be elevated to HC and call his own plays on offense... which is too much to expect of any Raiders HC and the very thing that should have gotten Cable fired last year.

It's a vicious cycle.

8:26 AM
Blogger Raider Take said...

I just keep coming back to this: At the moment Cable demonstrates he's most qualified for the job by ending a season of significant progress on a high note, he gets canned.

He was barely qualified for the job in the first place, then allowed (or told) to handle OC duties during his first full year as head coach, which was a serious organizational blunder.

Then, with another year under his belt and without the added burden of calling the offense, he seems to grow into the job and pretty much achieve as much as you could expect from a guy who was barely qualified for the job in the first place.

Then you fire him.

It's Tom Cable. What did you expect when you hired him for pennies on the coaching dollar? What did you expect when you retained him in 2010 after an abysmal 2009 campaign?

At first I was stunned and shocked.

Now, not so sure.

Cable's 2009 offense was horrible.
Jackson's 2010 offense was exciting, innovative and a rare combonation of power running and down-the-field passing. Give this group another year, get the wide-outs some maturity (they must be the youngest wide-outs in the NFL) and I think this can be one scary offense.

Assuming Jackson stays involved at some level.

In 44 games, Cable won consecutive games twice - once in 2008 and the 3fer in mid-2010. Rest of the time it was lose one win one. We were over 500 one time at 5-4, then walked off the cliff before clawing our way back to 8-8.

I liked Cable. He brought back our swagger. But, lets face it 8-8 is dead-on medicocure. The 2010 Raiders had the talent to go 10-6 and be getting ready for a game this saturday.

So, hey, if we can keep Jackson as the HC, I'm cool with this move.

10:57 AM
Anonymous JONES said...

Well Tinfoil, the reason why Cable being turfed hurts, is because.....with such a special owner/GM, you need a go between. Cable did that and he was bridging the huge gap from team reality to Al's vision. This has been a major problem as Shane Lechler testified to. So Cable could do that, as you can see from history of the Raiders, that combo doesn't come around to often. It also shakes the stability that has happened with the team since Cable took over. I'm telling you, people are so quick to forget and pretend like it's all normal. It's very shocking to see so many fans who have no memory. It's a reflex to shock to act and normalize events like this. You are joining the "crew" in their shock. If you are a true Raider fan and have been for more than a few years, this type of event shouldn't be a shock anymore.

Reading through some comments, and want to pick a few to further comment on:

First, I thought that the players played for Cable this season (not for the contract). I think over the past few years the players gained admirable respect for Cable. The same happened with Madden, and Davis still fired him.
I would hope that Cable stays on for a GM position, but the way he spoke on Sirius, he wants to coach.

Then Hue says this at the end of our season ending game, “He (Campbell) played well this season, but were coming back next year and are going to be better.” I didn't think Campbell played that well. He was not that great but was average."

I feel as a team, we've taken a step backwards with this firing; especially if Hue Jackson is retained. I am not putting my hope in hiring Jim Harbaugh, I don't think Al will pay him enough.

The only HC that would make me feel warm/fuzzy about:

Jon Gruden (2), but he may be going to Washington or (gulp) Denver
Steve Sarkisian
Jeff Fisher (But, good news for us, NFL.com is reporting that Titans' exec advised Bud Adams to keep Fisher and cut Vince Young).
Steve Marriucci
Bill Cower (wishful thinking)

Who we will, more than likely, end up getting (in order of who I think will come):

Hue Jackson
Jack Del Rio
Josh McDaniel
John Fox
Wade Phillips
Eric Mangini
Mike Singletary
Rich Rodriguez (Michigan)

Take,

I do not think the Raiders are lending Jackson to the 9ers to help them out. I think he is obligated to allow Jackson to interview. They requested the interview prior to Cable's firing and Al had no choice but to accept it.

If Jackson has any integrity and intelligence he would explore his head coaching options while there is interest. If he is not smart/ambitious enough to realize that then he is not head coaching material.

I understand that. But if we're working on the premise that he's "in" as head coach of the Raiders, then it doesn't make sense. If he's the coach, then he's on the team, and he should simply decline due to lack of interest.

That said, if he's not "in," then it makes sense.

In which case, the Chronicle really needs to get its editorial house in order.

Even if Al does want to hire him, he usually plays mind games and draws out the process.

Hue Jackson is not being considered for a HC, the guy was a QB COACH before this year and his team is 8-8 as an OC. He is the designated black interview that lives across the Bay. Wow, I'm still in shock over a coaching transition that should never happen.

The players are reeling, the fans are reeling, I would guess some of the assistant coaches are reeling too; but it's business as usual for Davis.

I look at this season as a total awakening for the Raiders.

They didn't just win in their division, they handled it. Games against all three opponents were more lopsided than I can ever remember. Raiders 59, Broncos 14. Come on! Are you f’n kidding me? How fun was that to watch, or the season finale?

Now, the one guy that ALL the players looked up to for support and team stability has been shit-canned in the wake of the only identifiable progress in eight long seasons.

That's no way to run an org.

Perhaps all this discussion is premature because Davis is waiting to pull the trigger on a major coaching hire, or some savvy executive hire.

What are the chances?

Jones, I think your "crew" is waiting for the above to happen.

That would be a terrific "I told you so" but, again, what are the chances?

Some of the aforementioned HC candidates are defense-minded coaches.

What are the chances?

The reason Davis doesn't hire Defensive-minded HCs is because..., well, you know.

Davis hires offense playcallers. History doesn't lie, i.e., unless someone here wants to reference the dark ages, again.

I agree, Roy. My point was about the Chronicle reporting two conflicting stories, a headline story that he is "in" as coach of the Raiders, and a story about him interviewing today with the Niners.

If he's not "in," then it makes perfect sense for him to explore options.

Well, if "I told you so" is what they are in this for.....then it's about them and not the team, just as I have said for years on here. This might surprise, but I totally support Al Davis and this move.

We can all sit around as fans, and say, Raiders are on verge of playoffs in 2011.
But we don't really know this.

More directly, I believe Raiders should have made playoffs THIS year.

And it looks like Al felt the same.

The Raiders, led by Cable, under performed in 4 key games this season. We all know the games, against the weakest opponents on schedule.

Had Raiders even split these games, they would be in playoffs today.

Someone is responsible for these losses, and it's the HC, Tom Cable.

We just can't keep closing our eyes to these things.
And I'm glad Al Davis is aiming for bigger, and better, for the Raiders.

Give me Harbough, or Gruden 2 over DR. Phil Cable, anyday.

1:40 PM
Blogger nyraider said...

Raider00 -

Remember,Cable did not call plays on either side of the ball. You're shooting the messenger.

The flops we saw the Raiders lay this year (aside from just labeling them growing pains) rest on the OC, DC and players more than they rest on Tom Cable.

If anything, Cable is more directly responsible for wins in which he called out his players and motivated them to perform at a higher level... which the players more or less acknowledge.

Now the Cable factor has been removed from the team.

"And I'm glad Al Davis is aiming for bigger, and better, for the Raiders."

Is he?

IMO, you're dreaming if you think Al Davis will pay market rate to a guy like Harbaugh (who's expected to get $5-7 million). This would break an Al Davis pattern that exists in perpetuity.

You’re not playing the odds here.

2:11 PM

You see, NYR? Look at how people deal with this. Harbaugh and Cowher dancing in their heads. Harbaugh is probably going to work for John Elway, Gruden is not welcome back, does anyone remember the Ricky's incident. How long of a memory span do Raider fans have?

Saying the Raiders could have made the playoffs this year coming off 7 straight 11 loss seasons and that is good reason to boot Cable. They were a couple of field goals away from going to the playoffs and they say this is a good move. He was a couple plays away from the playoffs, the players played hard for him, the players reactions are PISSED and people are saying this is a good move after 7 straight seasons of hell? After insanity for years they now think Al is going to be sane? It's really a lesson in human behavior and it isn't very pretty. The fan base is as nutty as the owner.

Interesting that the Broncos would hire Elway as their football exec. Obviously, for that franchise, Elway is a link to their last period of success.

For the Raiders to do that, we would have to consider guys like Gruden, Gannon or perhaps Tim Brown (all very smart football guys).

What are the chances?

Aren't all those guys banned from the Raiders facility? Well, maybe not Brown.

You know there's a problem when players like Lechler are trying the contact Al Davis by phone to ask WTF is going on.

So it's hard to pretend the today's news is a good thing.

I'm sorry, you cannot seperate Tom Cable from the wins and losses.

I give Cable full credit for a perfect 6-0 in the division.

But how about the Miami game ?

A home game, against a terrible opponent. With so much on the line, and Raiders do not even show up for this game.

And I'm suppose to give the HC a pass on this ? No way.

You say Cable does not call offense, or defense plays. Fair enough.

So what is his function ?

To take credit for wins, and pass buck for defeats ? Some leader.

The Raiders can do better, and I suspect they will.

These quotes from Lechler are for the archives. They corroborate everything some here have been saying for a long time, but has fallen on deaf ears.

– “(Tom) had it down pat on how to deal with Al . . . I understand what he went through with head coaches because I’ve been through so many of them. he was able to keep Al’s angerness, I guess you would say, or decision-making, away from the team. It was a big reflection on coach Cable being very much a professional in this whole deal and understanding how to isolate problemsand only addressing the ones that seriously need to be addressed.”

– “I mean, there’s a reason we’ve been through seven head coaches. It’s difficult . . . it was tough for Jon Gruden when we were kicking butt every Sunday. I mean, we go to Kansas City, beat a playoff team and the plug gets pulled. I looked at it like, there’s no logic in this one.”

It's exactly what Al Davis told him it was, and what he told him it wasn't.

Let's not pretend like HC of the Raiders is like any other HC job in the NFL.

IMO, Cable did a tremendous job dealing with the circumstances at hand. Apparently, Lechler agrees with that assessment.

It may be easy for us to sit here (some thousands of miles away) and pass judgement, but I tend to believe the assessment of a team Captain who should be too scared to put the truth out there, for fear he could become the next victim.

Clarify!!!..

Just as been stated here frequently a "HC" needs to justify what he wants and he needs to produce if it's given to him...

Well Cable failed to produce enough "V"s to make a "PO" run NOT because this team couldn't win but directly due to piss poor decisions that were made such as NOT running the ball in 3/4 of our season ending losses....

Going from 5-n-4 at the Bye to 3-n-4 to close out this season was NOT good by any stretch of the imagination...

Cable's insistence on the type of "FA"s that were signed...

Regrets:

Passed on opportunity to get Michael "TheDawg" Vick and I'm betting Al wanted him and regrets not pulling that trigger every time he see's his face in that spot light...

Passed on Albert "NO-RUN" Hainsworth....Signed his classmate Henderson...

Passed on Shawn "Roids" Merriman when he was free to be taken and could have helped this team win...

Would have tied our hands this season as far as going after Plaxico "GunDumb" Burris/Vince Young/Roy Williams/Vincent Jackson and possible others...

Conversely they pimped a worthless Kile Boller who took up need roster space when Colt Brennen was a decent project on the roster...

We have now resigned Luis Rankin who was let go...

So in retrospect NOT everything was Peachy Cream...He had his gifts and his strengths but also his weaknesses and those are what got him run....

Clarification...

I believe we would have been better as a team in 2011 had we kept Cable -n- Hue while adding new blood at "DC" and a few key players but Cable would NOT have liked those new players...

NYRaider,

So Shane Lechler is upset. He felt Cable did a great job dealing with BS from upstairs, and keeping Al the boss, at bey.

OK. Fine. But the fact is, Raiders still lost to the Cards/Texans/9ers/Fish.

This is what cost Cable his job.

The idea that Cable knew best how to deal with Al is absurd.

Best way to deal with Al, is to WIN.

If Cable wins even 2 of the 4 games, he keeps his job.

Instead, his Dr. Phil BS probably wore a little thin on Al.

Lechler should be less interested in how the HC deals with the owner, and more concerned with why his team is losing to 4 of the worst teams in the NFL.

The Raiders do not need slick communicaters. They need to win the games they should win.

4:14 PM
Blogger nyraider said...

PR - you are under an incredible misconception that the HC has something to do with personnel decisions.

Why would you think that?

Case in point, Kiffin didn't want Russell (and probably made a good case) and Davis drafted him anyway.

Remember, Davis and Kiffin were still in their honeymoon stage when that happened.

Davis makes all personnel decisions, for which I give him all the credit for a tremendous draft in 2010.

Blogger nyraider said...

Raider00-

I guess I don't understand where you're coming from. If you take away certain responsibilities of the HC, then later hold him accountable for those very same responsibilities, that's a bit unfair.

And the idea that Cable knew best how to deal with Al is not "absurd." It comes right from a captain of the team. Why would you doubt Lechler's word? Lechler is a player that communicates directly with Al Davis.

IMO, 8 wins off 7 straight 11+ losing seasons is tremendous progress, particularly when you couple that with 6-0 in division, including several lopsided and record-breaking wins.

As Jones said, we were a couple field goals away from making the playoffs. This isn't the first season, and it won't be the last, that we can say that. Shit happens.

IMO, unless Davis learns to lower the bar (like so many of us have) we will continue to transition into coach after coach... a pattern that has held true and plagued this team for too long.

The time for Shane Lechler to be pissed is not now.

Lechler, the captain, should have been pissed during the Miami debacle.

He should have warned them that if they did not awake from their coma, arise from their sleepwalking. They might lose their beloved HC, Cable at the end of the season.

Instead, the Raiders did slumber their way through the Miami game. Just as they zombied against Cards, Texas, & 9ers.

Tom Cable was powerless to stop it. The captain, Lechler was powerless to stop it. And now, their crocodile tears mean very little.

Young is 30-17 in his five NFL seasons, but only 13-14 against teams finishing a season at .500 or better. He’s also battled questions over his work ethic, leadership and injuries. He suffered a season-ending thumb injury on his right hand Nov. 21, tossed his shoulder pads into the stands and told off coach Jeff Fisher in front of the locker room before storming out.

The quarterback is due a roster bonus of $4.25 million in March and an $8.5 million salary for 2011.

Reinfeldt informed agent Tom Condon that Young isn’t in the team’s plans for the future. League rules keep Young from being released until Feb. 7, and he cannot be traded until the first day of the league year—an uncertain date because of the labor unrest.

No decision yet regarding Jeff Fisher...

Many believe Harbaugh is ready to make the leap to the next level, eager for a new challenge. He was the Oakland Raiders’ quarterbacks coach from 2002-03 before spending three seasons as head coach at the University of San Diego.

Interesting but at the Pro level...

Cable was 4-n-8 his 1st season as "IHC" -n- 5-n-11 the next and 8-n-8 now but I guess his progress was not enough....

It's not despair, just confusion.

If we're going to hold Tom Cable to a higher standard than what we could reasonable expect Tom Cable to achieve, why hire and retain Tom Cable in the first place?

Why marry Helen Hunt only to get pissed when she doesn't suddenly turn into Heidi Klum? If you get my drift.

Anonymous Raided Nate 75 said...

The bottom line is this: Cable is gone. There was good, bad, ugly, and definitely some epic moments with him this season.

Like I said, after 7 years of woe, 8-8 was something to build on, much like it was when Gruden took over; and left me with a minty fresh outlook into the offseason.

At the same time, I was deeply troubled by the schizophrenic play; where we would come out and dominate one week, and then flatline and lose a game we should've won the next few.

Some can blame the OC/DC/ST coaches all they want, but during the week when film is watched, and a game plan is put together, it is the HC that puts it together. So Cable, is just as responsible for the losses to SF, Ten, Arizona, Jacksonville (which was the most deplorable to me); Miami (the second most); Indy (3rd most); Pittsburgh; and Houston.

This just in, VY will be cut or traded out of Tennessee. More than likely cut. Maybe good news for us. I'd love to have him on the team.

As far as a Head Coach, I would be satisfied with Marriucci, Gruden, or Sarkisian. I don't think we get any of them. I think it is Hue Jackson, or some AWOL coach.

Hey Jones, Rich Rodriguez of Michigan was fired, and at the time I mentioned his name, it was official that he was let go. It is widely viewed that Jack Del Rio will be fired. It is also widely viewed that Jeff Fisher may be fired; we will know in a few days.

The bottom line is this, after Kiffin was fired, it became very clear that the list of people who would want to work for Al Davis was slim. I think it is the same, nothing has changed on that front; which is why Hue Jackson is the man.

Maybe, by some miracle, Al pays big $$ for a Head Coach, knowing that there will be a player's lock out, then get some big swinging Free Agents, and fire that Head Coach, and bring in a scrub. Who knows? I don't, you don't, and I doubt that Al even knows. Either way, I can't shake the feeling of "Here we go again."

A couple quick observations (some mentioned already but worth rehashing) after reflecting on the last 24 hours and past 2010 campaign:

#1 The pool of VIABLE head coach candidates that can take us to the next level in 2011 (read playoffs) whittles down to 1 guy and one guy only: Hue Jackson

- The HC has to come in at a bargain basement price (scratch Cowher, Harbaugh or any candidate worth $3M+ per season).

- The HC has to have a good relationship or neutral relationship with Davis (scratch Gruden, Fox).

- The HC has to be an offensive minded coach (scratch Wade Phillips, and any "hot" DC in the league)

- Any other HC candidates that you want to throw into the discussion will need a min. of 2 years to find their bearings at Alameda.

#2 The 2010 was tangible progress but yet a MIGHTY disappointment when you look over the 16 games. You can say we didn't make it due to a few missed kicks, being flat, bad playcalling, etc. but if you look closely (a) how we let the AZ, SF, JAX games literally slip from our hands (b) how we responded after the bye week; it was unacceptable.

#3 One topic that I'm sure got under Davis' skin was how Cable handled the QBs in the 1st 8 weeks. There is no question that Cable was trying to saddle the fence between his loyalty to Ski (for saving his job in 2009) and Davis (who gave him the job and clearly wanted Campbell as his "guy".

#4 The only guy who fits the bill for a Davis hire is Jackson. Jackson is the only guy who could hit the ground running with 1 year working in Raiderville. The talk about Jackson not being able to call the plays and be HC is utter non-sense. In fact, Davis clearly prefers a HC who is the playcaller.

#5 No one knows how strong of a working relationship exists between Davis and Jackson but if he is hired, he (Jackson) knows full well the challenges AND expectations for 2011 ... get to the playoffs or be prepared to be released.

"So it was Tom Cable that was out-coached and outplayed by those teams, not Hue Jackson, John Marshall and the players?"
***********************************

NYRaider,

You can turn that argument around.
It can be said that Cable didn't win a thing until this season, when Hue Jackson arrived.

That no unit of the Raiders made more strides than Jackson's offense.

Was it perfect ? No. But far better then when Cable ran the show.

Jones,

If you think I'm stupid for thinking Raiders should have beaten, Cards,Texas,9ers,Fish, well, ok.

But I think it's stupid for everyone to sit back and assume Cable, & Raiders were a cinch for playoffs in 2011.

The NFL is not going to be sitting back, standing still, waiting for Tom Cable to get his sh*t together.

What if Jim Harbough is standing on the Donk sideline next year. Still think we're beatin them twice ?

Think the Dolts will miss playoffs again next year ?

Don't think the Chefs will get a little better ?

No one is going to stand still, and do the Raiders any favors.

Raiders need a HC that can get the team to play well for ALL 16 games.

This is a bold, risky, move by Al Davis, like firing Rauch for Madden.

Let's see what he comes up with before we jump off the cliff.

Something like Harbauh returning home to the Raiders after being "QB" coach under Gruden/Callahan....

The San Francisco 49ers met with Jim Harbaugh on Wednesday about their head-coaching vacancy, but they have yet to strike a deal, according to league sources.

The Miami Dolphins, meanwhile, remain seriously interested after failing to land former Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Jon Gruden and now are re-focused on Harbaugh. Dolphins owner Steve Ross is seeking another meeting with the Stanford coach, this time in California.

League sources say the 49ers have offered around $4.5 million per season, while the Dolphins offered Gruden $7 million per season, which he rejected to stay at ESPN as an analyst.

Harbaugh is seeking a deal worth around $6.5 million per season, which Pete Carroll received from the Seattle Seahawks last year to leave USC. And while several people close to Harbaugh have advised him against going to the 49ers because of their front-office structure, he has received more favorable reports on Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland.

At this point, I'm just more mystified about what was possibly expected from Cable to deserve this outcome at this time. I don't get that. If he wasn't worth retaining this year, then he sure as hell wasn't worth retaining last year.

This must be part of that eight-year (nine, ten, etc.) plan to become a winning team. Not just any winning team (after all, we scoff at those teams), but a team whose dominance can only be forged through years and years and years of strategic mediocrity.

The reason I'm wondering is that anyone who watched the Raiders this year (good and bad) knows full well that our offense took a QUANTUM leap in production this year IN SPITE of less than ideal circumstances (injuries, QB carousel, young players learning on the fly, etc.).

Jackson deserves the LION'S share of credit for DOUBLING our offensive production in 1 season. This feat alone is truly remarkable when put in the context of what he was dealing with.

I can't state this any more clearly; The Raiders improvement in W's and L's this season is because the offense took this quantum leap.

That's not all there is to it.

Sure, maybe Jackson is a good motivator.

Part of the problem, as I see it, here's another HC transition with another inexperienced upstart HC who will be calling his own plays.

Been there, done that.

And I wouldn't discount Cable's strong influence with the players. It's being shown right now, as we potentially just lost the NFL's all-time leading punter for voicing his loyalty to his HC.

That's the same mentality that gets photos removed from the wall at Ricky's. It's called ego, and it's larger than life.

CJ,
I don't doubt that Jackson is ready to take over as HC. I think there are some Media writers that are saying "I told you so" because they are saying they predicted this when he was hired last offseason. I think Cable should've received another year as Head Coach; and it's interesting to see Monte Pool say the 49ers may have forced Cable out the door by seeking permission to interview Jackson as Head Coach.

Here is my concern: is he capable of taking us beyond 8-8? At this point, no. It is hard for me to believe that just as much as he gets credit for "turning our offense around", he gets that same credit for coming out flat against SF, Miami, Indy, Arizona, Houston, and Pittsburgh. The defense lost the game for us against Jacksonville; and Tennessee was the first game and we just weren't prepared. I'm not sure he can make "in game" adjustments.

If Hue is Head Coach, then they will make a run for Vince Young, guaranteeing it right here. Hue is a QB Coach, and Al Davis was drooling at the possibility of VY slipping to #7 that year in the draft ('06?). Which puts Campbell as a backup, and Gradkowski out the door. Boller stays on.

So here's another interesting scenario: Say Harbaugh goes to Miami (who SF wants), and SF hires Jackson away from the Raiders; does Al Davis bring Tom Cable back, and say he just wanted to "renegotiate his option", along with a new Offensive Coordinator?

6:17 AM
Anonymous gary said...

I just read Campbells interview where he is firmly in favor of Jackson taking over, and that helps me immensely.

Campbell IS the second most important player on this team behind HC... and if Jackson can figure out a way to get Campbell to be a pro-bowl type QB... the Raiders will be fine.

A pretty big "if" fer sure... but the fate of this team is still mostly on Campbell. Hate to say it... cuz the guy scares the hell out of me in mediocrity.

BTW... pretty sure Lechler is under contract so the only way Al will get rid of him is by trade... and I won't mind getting back into the 1st round (fer instance) and losing a punter.

There is nothing that I know about Al that thinks this could happen, and I doubt Cable would take the offer. Well, MAYBE he would if he didn't have anything else... unlikely. Not too many people could turn such perennial losers into respectability so quickly. Theres lotsa teams that value that!

Blogger BlandaRocked said...

There are a couple of things in play with Tom Cable. I feel releasing Cable is a sign that Al is pretty sure there will be a lockout in 2011.

Facing the facts, Cable earned one more year as Raiders HC, not two as the option calls for. The team (under Cable's direction) showed that it was indeed capable of MORE than a .500 season. But a .500 season was what we got.

Giving Cable an extension for two years, when one will likely be wrecked by a lockout doesn't entirely make sense.

I feel Davis will go in one of two directions.

Most likely: Maintain consistency and offer it to Hue Jackson.

Least likely: Al has finally determined that it's time for someone to come in and take over the lion's share of authority - and is therefore willing to pay Jim Harbaugh what he will ask for.

Ultimately, as excited as I am about the Raiders no longer carrying a losing record, they still aren't winners. They are... Well, they're kissing their sisters.

Lechler's upset. But this team was certainly capable of better than .500. If the team loved Cable so much, why didn't they win more for him? Perhaps Lechler will consider that the next time he finds a coach he likes.

I'm cool with letting Cable go if it winds up being Jackson or Harbaugh. If neither, and we're going in a completely different direction - AGAIN! - then I'm no longer on board with Al. I can understand his desire to win, but you have to become competitive first.

With Davis, it’s hard to tell if his HC decisions are predicated on business, the hope of winning, saving a few dollars on a coaches salary, nepotism, or ego. boy are the whiners dumb or what? what the hell are they thinking? josh mcdaniels????? what the???? if they recover and get jackson, al's screwed so he'd better make a decision and quick!

Al moved back to Oakland out of necessity, IMO, he didn't do it for the fans. If he could of moved from LA to another huge city, he would of done it. He always talks about loyalty, it doesn't appear that Al has any loyalties to the fans or players. It's kind of like the "crew"...one rule for them and different rules for everyone else.

Was wondering if... sending John Herrera in a private plane to woo a possible HC, would help the Raiders or hurt them? Harbaugh, to the Raiders, who even thought that?

There is another option to think about.

A scenerio where Al knows he is going to lose Hue Jackson to another team.

So rather then returning to a situation with Cable and no Jackson, which was pretty bad.

Al decides to go in a different direction. Bring in Harbough as HC/OC, therefore saving money by having Harbough serve 2 roles.

Al ends up with one of the top young coaches, and the Raiders do not miss a beat.

Good job...At least someone knows enough about the game and the business to clarify things for us...

Yes...I agree Cable had earned another year but he had not earned 2 more seasons...If the team didn't make it into the "PO" I would be asking for his head after one more...

One further option Al has here...He could still bring back Cable on a one yr deal with everything else the same...No one knows what conversations have taken place under that "Cone-o-Silence"....

Meanwhile Al gets the opportunity to evaluate everything at his leisure...Also someone reported Cable gave a recommendation for Hue to get the job...Something about they talked and came to that assessment...

I looked for it but don't see it so if anyone knows who was that conversation with...Cable -n- Al or Cable -n- "Mediot"s...

Re: "VY"...

He has a much better arm than "JC" who has trouble getting the ball deep...It's usually always under thrown...

"JC" has consistently had a "QB" rate around #85 and finished the same with us...7.3yd ave is his highest ever and usually around 6.5yd ave...

"VY" has consistently improved his yr by yr and finished with a #99 after being at #83 last season......8 yd ave...He only had 7.3yd ave last season...

He has consistently gotten the ball down field better than "JC" while keeping plays alive with his legs...

I've done a quick regression analysis and calculated the Raiders have about a 0.00001% chance of having Harbaugh as their next head coach.

And to that, someone is sure to reply, "you mean we have a chance?"

I like how wild speculation and pure conjecture become the truth on this board. That's what makes it fun, I guess.

Jones, & NYR,

You might be right.

Maybe Al won't come up with the money to land Harbaugh.

But if we're just talking talent, rosters, and winning.

Wouldn't someone intelligent choose the Raiders over, 9ers, Donks, or Fish ?

Harbaugh may find out what a lot of young, hot shot, NFL, HC's discover.

You still need good players to win.

In this regard, Raiders are ahead of the pack.

Setting the salary issue aside for a moment, I believe the Raiders do have tremendous talent, but I must also believe a guy like Harbaugh will require the kind of authority to control that talent which simply is not available to him in Oakland. Remember he's used to getting his way in the college ranks.

IMO, Jackson is already the next HC of the Raiders, it's just that nobody has been informed. It could take months for word to get out (by accident). We all know (or should know) what importance Davis places on titles.

Jackson is employed by the Raiders. Hell, Davis may not officially elevate his title to HC so he can save giving him a pay increase. We could just operate with an OC and a DC and have all the departments answer to Davis.

At this point, I am strongly in favor of Davis coaching the team himself. That way we cut out the middleman.

Even if Jackson was going to leave us for another team, I believe it is easier to find young OC's who can be successful than it is to find young HC's who can be successful.

We knew Cable could navigate these waters we do not know if Jackson can.

Also, we have not heard anything from Al. If he is going to hire Jackson we better do it soon.

NYR,

In your regression analysis, did you find any independent variable which changed your dependent variable? I of course am assuming your dependent variable was one Mr. Davis. Given Mr. Davis would rather be right than consistent, I would use a non linear regression model.

Oh wait, we have consistently been wrong on any number of things, one of which is who we chose as a head coach since that is the reason we lose. You might to make that a linear regression model. Let me know what variable in this universe could move the dependent variable. Would be most interested in knowing!

Jones,

I've been pretty hard on Al Davis the last 7 years.

But it's important to be fair as well.

Because while i was taking some verbal shots at Davis, a funny thing was happening.

Al Davis was building a playoff team.

Problem is, his playoff team, did not make the playoffs.

And that is why I believe Tom Cable was justly dismissed.

I'll repeat myself again. Cards/texans/9ers/Fish.

Just win 2 of the 4, Mr. Cable, and you're still Raiders HC today.
He did not.

And Shane Lechler can say anything he wants to say now.
But 2 of those games had to be won. They were not.

And to not even show up for the Miami game was a total disgrace.

I don't know how Mr. Lechler can explain that away.

The time for Lechler, and other players to show support for Cable was during the season.

To go the extra mile. Put in the extra effort. Win the extra game or two. Make the playoffs. Show coach Cable how much they loved him, and wanted to keep him around.

Instead, they disrespected Cable by losing to 4 of the worst teams in the league.

Case closed as far as I'm concerned.

UNREAL.7 yrs in a row of 11 losses, a league record. They finally win as much as they lose and coming close to the playoffs after 7 seasons of....and you say the HC should be fired? It takes more than a year for a team to jump to the playoffs from 7 yrs of..... seeing it as a failure for just missing going to the playoffs and looking vastly improved, that makes no sense. The players play for him, It took Al how many hires before he found a guy he could work with and you think his next hire will be better? Track record doesn't say that , does it, EXACTLY, case is not closed.

If you look long and hard at the 16 games, take notice of the 1st 6 games because ultimately this put us in a VERY deep hole to make a playoff push.

Losses to Tenn, AZ, Hou, SF

Going into week 7 we are sitting at 2-4.

If the magical # was 10 to get to the playoffs, we were looking at having to win 8 of our last 10 games to reach pay dirt.

Besides these 1st 6 games, you also have to look at how the starting QB situation was handled.

As a starting QB, Ski was 0-3.

Losses to AZ, Hou, Mia

Playing part of game ..

StL - went in for Campbell and won
SD - replaced by Campbell, Raiders win due to Campbell
Pitt - went in for Campbell in losing cause

Why is this relevant and which game probably sticks in Davis' craw? The Miami game. Campbell won consecutive games vs. Seattle and KC leading up to the bye week. We lay an egg after the bye week at Pitt with Campbell at QB. The next game Ski starts vs. Miami in spite of very poor results leading up to the game AND Campbell clearly being the #1 QB on the roster.

But after 7/11 loss.... all of a sudden Al is impatient after the first season of respectability? All of a sudden it's expected to be in the playoffs or you are fired? Does that make any sense? A team learns how to win, very rare that a perennial loser goes to Super Bowl contenders in one yr.

If the reason for his firing is a couple of poor outings, that isn't right. The culture was developing and it got stronger as the year went on, that is progress my man. Why cut the legs off of progress?

There is something much more to this story and most of you on here are pretending it doesn't exist. Lechler spelled it out, plain as day, still the "new crew" say that Al Davis meddling doesn't affect the team. It truly is a study in human nature.

But Jones,

You're taking a tremendous leap of faith with your logic.

You say Cable had the Raiders poised on the brink of the playoffs, and maybe bigger things in 2011.

But how do we know ?

NFL is not a stand still league, waiting for Raiders to catch up.

How do we know Cable will figure out how to beat the bad teams next year ?

And what if Hue Jackson takes a walk ? Do you trust Cable on his own, based on his record in similar situations ?

Tom Cable did as best he could. But his limited knowledge of the game caused him to hit a wall he could never get past.

It's time for change.

No. But the Raiders have been a “stand still” team. And just when they’re waking up from a seven year slumber, you want to risk putting them back to sleep.

How do I know Cable will figure out how to beat bad teams?

That's not an argument to fire the guy. How do you know anything about the future?

Your argument to fire Cable hinges on 2 losses (whichever they might be).

So they lost to Miami. Get over it. They also showed us they can play hard and walk all over the division. That only took a decade.

Raider fans memory loss is becoming an epidemic.

Doesn’t anyone remember the Raiders’ losing streaks in the division?

So if it’s not Jackson, then Davis will have to roll the dice again.

Best case, Jackson will be HC and call plays, which is EXACTLY what got Cable in trouble.

Raiders HC position is like no other in college or pro football. Haven't we learned this by now.

Blue Monday, did you finish that regression analysis?

Let’s make Raiders HC the dependent variable, and let’s run a new regression with the following independent variables:

Al’s ego
Al’s moods
Al’s desire to win
Al’s vindictive nature
Al's desire to save a buck

Let me know what the correlations are.

Al moved back to Oakland, not for the fans, and not for Al. He move for the team. LA was a disaster. Al had always had regrets about leaving the Oakland support. When the NFL blew up his stadium deal in LA, he figured that Oakland was the best place to turn in that they already had a stadium. The NFL had already stated that they would no longer support the LA Coliseum. It's as simple as that. No conspiracy involved.

I think Al needs Jackson for the continuity. Blowing up the system brings us back to starting over again. I believe that the most likely outcome is that Jackson is the new HC. The players like him almost as much as they liked Cable, so there's no problem getting the players on board.

However! Harbaugh had just taken the Stanford job at the time that Al said he had someone in mind to lead the organization, but that person was not currently available. And, apparently, that person remained unavailable until at least now.

It is also known that Harbaugh and Al Davis are VERY GOOD friends, and Harbaugh has said in the past that he very much liked working in the Raider organization. Harbaugh considers Al a mentor.

I think that one needs to at least consider the possibility that the "someone" Davis had in mind was Harbaugh. One may also consider that Cable was ALWAYS an interim coach waiting for Harbaugh to arrive.

Still, my bet is on Jackson.

"You say Cable had the Raiders poised on the brink of the playoffs, and maybe bigger things in 2011."

Well, just look at the progression. Cables first yr, we saw some improvement, yr2 we saw them on the cusp of the playoffs. The players, for the most part played hard and seemed to be progressing towards improvement. The drama had settled down and we didn't hear of stupid shit going on, that was very refreshing. The team was primed, especially after sweeping the division, to do even better next yr, that is a natural progression. That is a young team learning how to get to the playoffs.

All these fans saying "well he didn't make it to the playoffs". It doesn't happen over night, the culture has to be grown and Cable was moving the team to that. Even the players were giving Cable the credit. But in the infinite wisdom of Al Davis and some fans, Cable deserved it because he couldn't jump from 7/ 11 loss seasons into the playoffs. It's just insane thinking and has no basis in logic.
